    This was truly an epic battle and it was awesome to see each deck in the Clash Pack put up such a good fight. For those wondering about the Two-Player Clash Pack they're using, it's a new product that came out with Magic 2015 Core Set. When you're done dueling a friend, the two decks are designed to be merged together into a hydra masterpiece you can bring to Friday Night Magic!

      That was by far the best game so far in the series, these clash packs are a good idea. I like deck building, but there's something to be said for a more balanced game with a lot of variability and sweeping moves. I like games where powerful cards are useless early game, even if you could somehow afford them.

  • @xhenri6805
    @xhenri6805 Před 10 lety +103

    I'm really glad that they decided to use quality decks instead of the shitty decks they normally use. Really shows you how intense and close most magic games are. However, I think that the decks are not balanced very well - Fury is much more resilient than the Fate deck.

    • @chronoflect
      @chronoflect Před 10 lety +1

      I agree. Hopefully, they will keep upping the quality and maybe even use some top-tier decks in the future.

    • @roxannekrogh4228
      @roxannekrogh4228 Před 10 lety +21

      chronoflect I'd doubt they want to do that. It seems they want this series to be more for newer players, so using the shitty cards/Pre-cons gives them more access to the game. Rather than having to buy singles and spend tons of money on a Teir 1 deck, they can just go down to their LGS and buy one of these clash packs with a friend, having just as much fun.

    • @mycroftism
      @mycroftism Před 10 lety +2

      chronoflect LSV vs Day[9] next season using LSV's decks would be hilarious, but would immediately lose most of the non-magic players.

    • @TheHomemadeStrength
      @TheHomemadeStrength Před 10 lety +15

      ***** I don't think you'd immediately lose non magic players simply by using competitive decks. The biggest key with this show is the pacing. They go slow and explain everything they are doing. Watching pros happens too fast for normal people and we have no idea what is happening since we don't know what all the cards do.
      I feel like they could definitely splash in some more top level decks in the coming seasons (since season 2 is already filmed) as long as they keep the same slow pace. Also, games can't be ending in 5 turns so they need decks that will produce a match that they can make last for 20 minutes.

    • @xxhellspawnedxx
      @xxhellspawnedxx Před 10 lety +1

      *****
      I don't think so. With a good-enough production, players using really eldritch cards can still be entertaining to newbies/non-magic players.
      But I also think that this show is sponsored by Wizards of the Coast, and that they'd want him to promote what they can sell to the larger group of customers. They have no direct gain in the second hand market. Thus they'd want him to promote what they do sell directly, i.e. these pre-constructed decks.

      Since Sean didn't cast anything before attacking he could have re-played the creature in the second main phase and have the mana open on the next turn. By bouncing it in the end phase, he saved one round of damage and made Sean waste mana on the next turn.

      Most of the pre-constructed decks are really awful. Watching LSV play something like a Splinter Twin deck in the Modern format is such a different experience than these videos, but it takes a long time to understand the cards and how they interact with each other. Standard is a good format to watch so you can get a good idea of what some of the more powerful and interesting things that can happen, while still being the least complex.

      Charlie Ward Also because of the nature of how the Stack resolves, it is generally better to be reactive than proactive in Magic, and by waiting until an opponents end step, you eliminate sorcery speed spells as a thing they can do proactively that you have to spend mana reacting to. You will see a lot of pro players taking a few hits just to make sure they can spend their mana "safely", that is without the opponent getting a chance to respond to it.

    Day[9] and Geek and Sundry--
    I'm a huge fan of yours. I love all your dailies (especially Monday) and all your SC2 wisdom. It was your hilarious humor that got me into Starcraft. However, I have always loved Magic and it was the first true game I played. Spellslingers is by far the favorite thing that you do. I have watched and will continue to watch every episode of Spellslingers. A dream of mine is to play on Spellslingers and it's something I have wanted to for a long time. I'm pretty sure you guys film in California and I live there. I am an expert on magic and I like to think of myself as a pretty funny guy, so I think I could make the show more fun. It would be awesome if I could get a chance to play with you on your show.
    Thanks so much! Keep on slingin' those spells!

  • @GEM4sta
    @GEM4sta Před 10 lety +5

    I've never played magic, but surely Sean was throwing on purpose there? Why would he swing with all those 8-8s? If he doesn't have anything, it's way overkill. If he does, it would only hurt him, yeah?

    • @xxhellspawnedxx
      @xxhellspawnedxx Před 10 lety +3

      We can only speculate as to what moved through his head, but I'd say this for his play: At any turn, any well-constructed blue deck can play a card that bounces the entire board, thus killing all those 8/8 tokens. As such, it's better to try and get the maximum potential damage out of them as soon as possibly, before they get bounced.

    • @deadnoobie2859
      @deadnoobie2859 Před 10 lety +5

      Also, he had Prophet of Kruphix out which gives his creatures flash. As they didn't know what were in the decks, Sean had no idea what kind of creatures LSV could have, and there are creatures that can bounce other creatures when they come into play.
      This means he could make a blocker and bounce a token, essentially removing two creatures form hitting.
      Basically he attacked with what he hoped would get passed any defenses his cards in hand could put up, while leaving enough back home to defend against what he could (non flyers).
      In that situation you have to hedge your bets in one direction. If LSV had just another bounce spell, or a bounce creature, Sean's attack would have won him the game right then and there. Unfortunately Sean just chose wrong and LSV had the correct answer.

    • @dvj613
      @dvj613 Před 10 lety +3

      The thing is he suspected LSV had something, and used the attack to fish it out. Sitting on all of those dudes doing nothing is pretty much just losing since you're just giving him time to draw into answers if he doesn't already have them. With LSV scrying 3 cards a turn, it wouldn't take long for him to find them if they exist in the deck. Aetherspouts is unique from most mass bounce in that it only gets your attacking creatures, if he was suspecting mass bounce, as he said, he was expecting to have ALL of his creatures bounced whether he attacked with them or not, so not attacking with them normally wouldn't accomplish anything. Looking at how he followed that attack step up, he clearly had a plan in place to return the board to parity and lean on his more powerful mana engine and topdecks to carry him the rest of the way. Even though all of his hydras got bounced by aetherspouts that turn, drawing out LSV's best answer card, destroying the bestow creature, killing the prophet of kruphix and gaining seven life are exactly what won him the game.

      He probably shouldn't have swung with *all* of them, but I would've attacked with a few. Probably enough to deal 8 damage. Also, he thought that luis didn't have any counter spells.

      Overkill is good in magic, just in decency.
