Josh Barnett is actually the smartest magic player I've seen in this show by now. Out of all the nerds who challenged Day9, a UFC-fighter had to be the most competent. :D
Any man that is such a high level grappler of his caliber, let alone world class martial artist is going to be intelligent. You can't be that skilled and be a dummy.

I was extremely surprised, not because of Josh's attitude, I already knew he was a class act, but everytime he dropped some magic knowledge, it was spot on "I will keep the deathtouch to deal with the fatties with no trample" and "when blue has untapped mana it's a bad sign" to name a few.
He said at Joe Rogan Experience that he was playing Magic a lot , thats why he wanted to be on the show I guess!
Sadly I only heard a few JRE podcasts, Dana White's episode and a couple others.

+Avram SantaMaria thought the same thing. Most of those guys are all beat up and brain damaged from the head punches and really come over as big impuslive douches or just big mouthed individuals but this guy is just so sweet!

I am a huge Josh Barnett fan, but I didn't know he played MtG! There is something so awesome beyond words at seeing my favorite MMA fighter playing Magic and speaking with knowledge and experience on the game.
This was maybe the best Spellslingers thus far. Josh Barnett seems like a really awesome person!
Few things are better than watching Day9 lose his mind over something mildly funny.
Such a joy to watch this one - felt like such a perfect match.
Probably one of my favorite episodes to date. Josh Barnett seems like a pretty cool, genuine person that just so happens to be able to kick your ass physically and magically.

Enchantment: Plain R.I.C.E.
Target creature takes one less damage each turn due proper treatment of minor ailments.
Ebola, a 7 mana cost card, that instantly kills the target card.
BlazeFireheart0 I love it! What if you made it an enchantment that passes to an attacker when the "host" is killed? And maybe have an activated cost that you must pay or it is duplicated onto a neighboring creature?
Red and Black is the best! That is why I play red and black.
This is, by far, one of my Top 3 Favorite Spellslinger episodes. Josh Barnett is a very rare, stand-up guy in MMA and Grappling. The fact that he plays Magic and doesn't have the stereotypical "bro" persona is a credit to not only his character but, also, his discipline. Not to mention Sean has one of the best quotables of this series in this match:
"So, I"m in burn range, I just played two sages and a bear....now, he's telling me a story. So, I'm sure I'm dead."
I know nothing about Magic: The Gathering, but I love the UFC and I love the band Mountain, so you get a fucking "like" from me!

For anybody playing M15 limited: If you have a one-drop and Illusory Angel in your opening hand, you're usually going to be much better off waiting and playing the one-drop and 4/4 flyer on turn four.
Loved how every play was examined in detail and the thought behind every possible move was explained. Easily one of the episodes to date. Thanks Josh!

As a casual player myself , I enjoy all the misplays and mistakes you guys can do. It makes the episodes way more enjoyable than any of the "flawless" lets-play of magic online that are on youtube. Keep on the good work !

You know what man that's cool and it's great that you're having fun but I want you to know the this is a dark and alien thought to me. I just can't comprehend people who don't want to see the game played to it's fullest.
In fact you've managed pointed out one of the few things about Spellslingers I don't enjoy.
Captain Carthage I get that, but there are plenty of other places to see Magic played really well. I like this series because it shows how much fun you can have even if you aren't amazing and sometimes make mistakes. I can see why it would be frustrating to watch it you were really good though :)

I totally agree. The way they play, it reminds me of the good times I've had with my buddies drinking some brews and playing some MTG and is more relatable and fun for me in that sense.

I think a lot of the hate comes from tradition, because before R&D revamped the color wheel blue was the most broken color. In order to balance things out, they started hating on blue, so it's not nearly as good now, and actually one of the arguably weaker colors. On the other hand, green used to suck but is now ridiculously good.

But I get it... no one likes being Counterspelled (even me, and I mostly like playing blue).

I'd still say it isn't balanced. There's no surefire way that I can see to counter it, except with a deck specifically tailored to beat it and nothing else, like a deck built around swarming your enemy, overwhelming him with 1/1's and tokens, not giving him any clear targets to counter. And that deck only really works against a blue counterspell deck.
Any other deck will either have heavy-hitters that will annihilate you before you can build up enough 1/1's to beat him down and/or aoe that will wipe your side of the board in one go.
If they changed the rules so that countering creatures wouldn't put them in the graveyard, or if they increased the mana cost significantly on the unconditional counterspell cards, I'd say it was more balanced, but as it is now, as it has been for the last ten years... Nope, not balanced in the slightest.
I can't even begin to explain how happy this episode makes me.
Please, please, please have Josh Barnett on the new season of Tabletop as well.

I'm an MMA fan and was both shocked and thrilled to see Mr Barnett's face on spellslingers.
I watch these videos as a MTG player, but mainly because I like Sean's personality. This is my fav episode to date. Good stuff.

{T}, Remove the charge counter from Ice Cauldron to add mana of the type and amount last used to put a charge counter on ice cauldron to your mana pool. The mana is only used to cast the spell on top of Ice Cauldron

If a player would draw a card except the first one they draw in their draw step each turn, that player discards a card instead. If the player discards a card this way, they draw a card. If the player doesn't discard a card this way, they put the top card of their library into their graveyard.

...Banding (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)

AthenaWhisper with my blue black commander i managed to mill someone for 56 cards XD the blue helped me with counters.
this is easily one of the best episodes yet. the best MTG games I've ever played have come from players that have a solid understanding of the game mechanics and the best sense of in-game fun talking. this shows those moments off. also, Josh really could tickle you to death. hope for a smart ref to end the fight at the right time when it comes to that. great episode and a lot of fun.

Ok, the MMA nerd kicked in at 0:42. Barnett has an MMA record of 33-7-0, not UFC. He's only had 7 UFC fights. I know, something minor, but it slightly bothers me.

With my Blue deck, about 30% of my draw cards allow others to draw as well! It's kinda great, actually! Especially since it makes me LESS of a target because EVERYBODY WANTS TO DRAW CARDS!!! =D

Yes mana burn no longer exists... sadly. It would be pretty irrelevant if it still existed though (in Standard). In Legacy it would be annoying.

To an extent. You can only use the mana during your upkeep.
I'm aware, still makes stuff like Tower of X and Bogarden Hellkite more fun. It doesnt have a deck yet, but it's a powerful enough effect that I think It will someday (Especially now that red is getting it's own weird type of card advantage).
Well unfortunately it's pretty slow. One mana more each turn, but you'd have to play a pretty slow deck. So what would that be? UR control, or Grixis? Seems like it can be done, and win with Bogardan or things of that nature. Lol idk man
