  • Around the 2020 presidential election, conservatives flocked to social media platform, Parler. Parler bills itself as an alternative to Twitter and Facebook, which, some believe, overstepped their bounds when they began labeling the former President’s posts. But Parler’s lax moderation policies lead to a slew of violent posts on the platform. Now, Google, Apple and Amazon have all abandoned Parler, and the company’s future remains uncertain.

      There are conspiracy theorist on the left and the right. And I think shutting down Parler is fueling more conspiracy theorist on the right who will exploit this more. Because shutting them down while still leaving twitter of facebook with the same type of rhetoric from the left is absurd. If they are going to crackdown on this then do it equally.

    • @ualdayan
      @ualdayan Před 3 lety +5

      @@sakenu16 The problem with your logic is Amazon doesn’t want to host this kind of content, Amazon doesn’t host Facebook or Twitter - they host themselves on their own servers, so Amazon has no ability to tell Facebook or Twitter anything about their content moderation. Parler however wanted Amazon to host their content for them - while refusing to follow Amazon’s rules on how quickly to remove violent content. Parler can host their own servers as well - somebody out there in this vast world will provide them an internet connection - they just have to do the work involved in building a server farm.

      There are a lot of immature people in this country. I used to do it, too. The false flagging a channel, etc. But I've gotten more mature over the years, and I see the hypocrisy. If you're truly for free speech, you don't need to try to get people cancelled. That's toddler crap and it's the path to a very dangerous and horrible dystopia.
      At the end of the day, we don't have to agree on a single thing, but what we should be allowed to do, is speak our mind without the risk of being deleted, either online, or IRL. It's disgusting.
      To complicate matters, there's a lot of shills. Oil, food industry, etc. (right wing). CCP, globalist, anarchist (left wing). And everything in between. These actually do need to be cancelled, but there's no algo that's even remotely good at dealing with them, and allowing people to flag them will just give them another tool to cancel people with.
      So... It's complicated. We've had 11,000 years to try to defeat tyranny, but idiocy is easier than intelligence, and that means tyranny is easier than freedom.

    10:28 I think an important question to ask is why that rug existed to begin with. Perhaps it was formed under the context that we must all give something of value to the rug in order to have a conversation in which both parties can stand. The reason that rug went away is because one of the parties felt like their side of the conversation was being subjugated while the other had free rain. I don’t think there should be a rug, I think eventually everyone should come to terms with each other; however, the nature of 21st century American politics makes that impossible without first giving something up. What we need to do is talk to each other, but that means sitting in a room (or this case, a social media platform) and discussing our differences in a civilized manner until we agree on something.

    What Apple, Google and AWS did was likely unconstitutional, but unless you can find an activist lawyer, nobody has the resources to stand up to those companies as they have essentially an unlimited treasury and in house legal. I'm a free enterprise guy, but at this point the only way the encumbrances on freedom of expression via the App Store policy spigot, is to have government pass regulation that enables people to use their devices however they like, and break up the App Store monopolies. It's within the capacity of Apple to let people download apps however they wish, the same OS is underlying both mac and iOS. They don't do it because it gives them a form of soft political power, and they get their cut off the top. The only thing we can do is pressure representatives over the anti trust of app store around the world.

      Nope. It doesn't solve the database issues and security issues they will have, especially when they actually require things like your SOCIAL SECURITY # to create an account. Right before AWS pulled the plug, they were actually hacked and had their entire database downloaded. Not having an app heavily handicaps their ability to streamline engagement on a phone, especially notifications. They don't have the youngest or brightest userbase.
