I love that they included Hotaru as one of the main Senshi rather than just a side character like they did in the 90s.., (not even given a changing sequence 😢)

S is my favorite season, closely followed by Stars. So, I’m a huge fan of this new opening. I’m hoping that Makenai will make an appearance in the second movie. The original openings are iconic to this day. Seeing as the Cosmos movies are the end of the remakes for the foreseeable future, I think I that the opening being something nostalgia bait-ish is totally fine. I’m so excited to see these movies. The Stars story is so chilling and I feel like these movies are going to be wonderful.

i love the final opening of the series, thought the chibi usa scene was a nod to the end of R when she runs to neo queen serinaty after the defeat of the black moon clan... the chibi chibi was just there... love in the end where it shows mamoru then turning into seyia with the whole plot to this arc... hope for an international release soon

I feel like the outers being introduced after the S reference of the inners is actually indirectly references the S opening where you see Uranus and Neptune come from the side screen and Pluto appears behind them followed by Tuxedo mask and Chibi-Moon. That's what I thought anyway.

S is the most popular season beside Stars, mainly because it introduced us to the Outer Senshi. Everyhting becomes much clearer if you read the Manga. All the battles Sailor Moon fought were orchestrated by Galaxia in the first place to prepare her for the final battle. Also Hotaru had to be awakened to be Sailor Saturn, so Galaxia would be able to actually harvest every Starseed available. This intro mirrors a lot of that and is also great fan service. I like it.

Some of the Sailor Moon S op imagery here kind of never fit the Infinity Arc in the first place, the Infinity Arc always had the least actually connection to the Silver Millennium and it's legacy. So in a sense even the way this references the 90s Anime is correcting it.

i agree. im really looking forward to cosmos and like the improvements and dedication to the manga that crystal has made, but character development wise, music and aesthetics, i think the 1992 version will always have the upperhand
i can't even look through a "blinded by nostalgia" perspective seeing as i wasn't even born at the time, but it was always just something i generally preferred. the best thing crystal has done was add omitted characters and make the senshi almost, or just as powerful as their manga counterparts (which the 90s anime changed or removed). it's just always going to be on top for me even though i love the manga aswell

As a 90s Sailor Moon fan, yeah this felt pretty lame. I hate overpandering fanservice, it makes me feel like creators think I'm a moron who only cares about nostalgia. They obviously referenced S's op the most because S is the most popular season among fans. But Stars' op has a LOT of iconic shots, why not pull more from that?
It's of course very ironic that an anime that is supposed to be a faithful adaptation of the manga tries so much to be, at least esthetically (superficially?), the 90s anime... This has been going on since Crystal season 3. I guess Season 1 and 2 tried to stray away from the first anime aside from the carbon copies transformatios... But Toei probably realized that the majority of SM fans are _90s anime fans_ and that they needed to sell Crystal to them (since, let's be honest, die hard manga-only fans are a small minority of moonies).
And let's point out the obvious. If you're trying to copy something, you'll always be compared to the original. When I'm watching the Cosmos op, all I can think about is how the 90s openings had better character designs, better colors, better storyboards, better and more dynamic animation... Watching a side by side comparison of the introduction of the inner senshi shows how Cosmos is lackluster...
The thing is, the few things I like esthetically about Crystal are original. I loved the washed out watercolored backgrounds of the first two seasons. Sailor Saturn's half transformation in season 3 is great (and fan service done well IMO). Season 3's opening visuals are by far the strongest and they're pretty much all original I think? Even if I don't think I would ever like it as much as the original anime since I don't care about the manga's story, there was an opportunity to develop a new visual identity for Sailor Moon. Something more elegant, more mature, like the manga did. Too bad.
EDIT: Well, seems like the opening for cosmos part 2 uses more references from Sailor Stars' op (as well as being set to Sailor Stars Song). From what I've seen, it looks way more dynamic and took more liberties instead of trying to copy exactly the references. Good job!

  • @AquaMarina369
    @AquaMarina369 Před rokem +6

I said this on twitter but I think this is just them trying to compensate for the fact people complained Crystal wasn't more like the 90's. So clearly it was just visuals and music people were referring to when they did, clearly. I've seen clips from a version of this with Sailor Star Song which I think leaked for part 2, guessing the Chibiusa clip will probably be swapped out since that wasn't there, most of the rest of the opening I'd seen before thoguh, at least the spotlights and last bit
To me this is just the worst kind of shallow pandering. But hey, at least they're honest, they removed a lot of the personality in the 90's anime version of the inners running into the spotlight which fits how in the manga they barely have any! (besides Minako obviously lol).
I genuinely hate the manga and this arc especially, I read it in full partially because of people hyping it up as the REAL ending and I really tried to enjoy it but it just frustrated me so much, not the least because basically all the characters here don't do anything, Rei and Minako are the most lucky in that regard and they have one prominent scene before they're killed off, Ami and Mako don't even get that!
My biggest hope with this movie is that it would at least have something, a little different from the manga version, like an adaptation is supposed to do y'know? I hated the manga story but I actually really loved how it was executed in Le Mouvement Final, it followed the structure of the manga basically scene for scene but in addition to songs and more focused themes, they referenced/took inspiration from the anime but actually used it to BUILD on the manga story. They cut the villains down to the ones in the anime (plus Chaos who's still the finally big bad in it), but they used that to flesh them out, Iron Mouse and Tin Nyanko get killed off very early on but they get killed by Galaxia for trying to warn the senshi about what's coming, which builds up Galaxia as a threat (they're even resurected as part of an army of silent shadow monsters she has foreshadowing the "completed" version that comes with the other senshi), which fuels Usagi being hesitant to fight the villains because she thinks they're senshi just being manipulated, which again builds up to that fight. They also have Siren and Crow be the main henchman, we get time to actually understand them and learn there motivation, they take lesylsomething and mesimythwhatever I don't rember's role from the manga as ultimately helping Usagi at the cost of their own lives. And since they're characters we got to know rather than being there for like 5 pages like the villains in the manga it actually has impact!
Rambling but, I REALLY hoped we'd at least get some little tweaks to add to the story even if not on the level of that because it made me realize the problems I have with the story the manga tells aren't from the structure being bad, I WANT to love another more manga faithful version. But someone who said they saw part 1 like 6 times confirmed to me they don't change anything at all, which honestly just makes this intro insulting to me. Like if you're going to do a manga version just go all the way with it and don't resort to shallow pandering to try and get people talking
Also didn't notice till you pointed it out that they flipped the order of Rei and Ami in most bits, charitable interpretation for me is they just wanted the order they joined, probably bitter negative thought though is that Rei was probably second in the original because she was Usagi's closest friend in the anime and especially early on incredibly prominent, and we have multiple sources on who made that happen and, yeah...
Sorry for the essay and just complaining! Honestly I was considering trying to write my own script on this today but I worry it'd just end up as bad faith ranting or something

The 90's anime put all of its budget in the opening and the transformations. The rest of it looked ok, even for its time there were animes that looked better than Sailor Moon. So to say that Cosmos is a step down from the 90's version (not you necessarily but some of the comments) is very unfair. The opening for the 90's would be used in 40+ episodes, of course it would have the best animation. Cosmos' opening is for the first part of the movie only and the animators have to make sure all of the movie looks good and where to put the most effort and budget. This arc is pretty demanding and needs to be animated wisely and carefully, so that means sacrificing some spots to uplift others. The 90's version of Stars had some atrocious animation. I may be rambling but what im trying to say is : this is an homage to all the openings and a sweet love letter to the fandom. Why are they doing it now? Cause the series is ending, maybe there wont be new animation after this. The directors and animators are all fans, I follow a lot of them on twitter and they've put a lot of love into this product, with the resources they have from greedy Toei. So let's be more positive, crticise but also be fair when comparing things.

I understand their "homage" and that nostalgia sells, but I can't help having a sour aftertaste with all the copying they've been doing for Cosmos so far. There was so much slander towards the 90s anime being innacurate and "not what Takeuchi wanted", along with the promise of the Crystal/Eternal/Cosmos being the perfect reboot and manga adaptation. An yet they can't stop riding on 90s success, straight up stealing animation and references from it to bait the old fans. Not to mention it somehow manages to take that smooth hand-drawn animation from the 90s and make it look cheaper with the modern techniques and budget. It's a little disappointing honestly.

Not a bad opening per se, but it loses a lot of impact when it so closely resembles the originally and it doesn’t massively elevate it. To their credit, they included all the senshi appropriately, but the few frames that are new are the least spectacular of all of them.
So, as Wendy would say, death to all of them 😮

Because of the current trend of giving fans remakes closer to the original source. There are several series that it's happened with, like FMA Brotherhood long before Crystal got announced. The original plan was for the series to be an anniversary celebration of the manga. Which is why this first part of this finale is dropping on Usagi/Chibi-Usa's birthday, June 30.
