  • This water heater had set for a year while the home was being remodeled after a fire. after being put back in the service for the last 8 months there was a horrible sulfur smell when using the hot water only. We are on quality clean purified sanitized city water. So a maintenance engineer friend That works for a university recommended changing the anode rod to an aluminum one. The anode rod was completely gone disintegrated when I took the knot out using my electric impact. and when I opened the drain this slime came out and quickly plugged the valve with mineral deposits. So I filled my garden hose full of water and hooked it to the drain and blew in the end of the hose with my mouth to create pressure to free up the drain valve. Worked like a charm. (btw -I had already disconnected the flexible line off the hot water output from where it connected to the hot water line so the water backing up could drain into a bucket. and I use this line to fill the garden hose with water). Then I reconnected the hose to the bottom. drain and opened it up again and it drained clearer water this time. Poured a cup of bleach down the anode rod hole as was recommended by my plumbing store and my engineer friend to kill any bacteria. letting it sit overnight and then we'll reconnect everything.

My friend's hot water smelled like rotten eggs so I flushed the water heater and replaced the sacrificial anode. It smells a lot better now. I also poured quite a bit of bleach into the water heater and let it sit overnight to kill the bacteria.
