Hey Ken. In the xt-3 the IS mode choices are Continuous or Shooting Mode. So what mode should we choose on that camera?
Ken,
Would you be kind enough to do a “second look” at this lens with consideration of using it on the XT3?
I also shoot with the Nikon 200-500 on my trusty d750 with really great results. But, now I often take my XT3 when hiking and I am considering purchasing the Fuji 100-400 for this purpose.
Thanks in advance. 😀
Just bought this lens for my X-Pro2 but the viewfinder does not appear through the lens but is only visible on the outside of the lens. How do I fix this?
Regarding IS modes: I actually think that the camera body should detect what your shutter speed is and compensate by automatically putting the lens in the appropriate IS mode - so, behave like a smart system that it could be. Who wants to be shooting and have to stop and consider what IS mode they're in?
Hi Theoria, What do you think of getting Fringe EF-FX Pro2 Adapter with Sigma
100-600mm Sport-final price almost the same as Fuji 100-400mm but with
extra zoom of 600mm? Plus open up whole cheaper varieties of Sigma/Tokina/Tamron
lens? Such as Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 Pro2 instead of Fuji 8-16mm f2.8, with huge price differenc & weight?
Hi Theoria, a new friend here. I was thinking of buying long lens for my X-T4. I am considering between 2 lenses - 1st is the 50-140MM or the 100-400MM. I dont which one should I buy. I love both landscape and wildlife or bird photography or any nature photography. I am a beginner in photography and just learn it from youtube and attending some full courses. Which do you prefer for me to buy and why? Thank you.
im thinking about getting this camera, do you think i should wait to see what 2020 brings as far xf lenses come?
I just bought the Fuji XF 100-400 and the rubber zoom ring has a little bit of lateral play. There’s zero lens creep, just a little lateral wobble. Is this normal? I’m not used to massive zooms so maybe it’s totally normal.
OK, full disclosure. i was on a 12mi hike in Patagonia in Oct. carrying my 5D MK III thinking it is time for a change. I ran across one of your videos on Fuji (i had a Fuji MF years ago that produced beautiful negatives). To make this already too long post brief i bought a used XT-20 kit with three Fuji lenses, then the xt-2, the fuji 16mm and 100-400. This week i bought the voightlander 58mm and zeiss 85mm, and nikkormat 200mm. All this gear has been fabulous and re-energized my photography. Love the Acros and shoot mostly in BW.
Your videos are entertaining and filled with pearls of wisdom.
Thank you so much. (sending more substantial thanks via PayPal)
PS stop recommending lenses for Fuji
PPS should i sell my only remaining Canon lens 500 f4?
Hi Ken. really like your vids very informative. have an x-t2 with a 100-400 mm .. the 5mtr to infinity or Full switch at the back end of the lens. can u explain that please. I normally shoot way over the 5 mtr mark [thats why I got the 100-400 mm] and mostly I shoot birds on the fly. does any position make a difference. 5 mtrs being the closest you can get to a subject for focusing right?
thankyou.
yes. 5 to infinity mode make the focus work faster, but not the focus speed itself. The barrel have to move less distance, and so the focus is better. 5 means you are not going to be able to focus less than 5m.
Is there an IS setting in the XT-3? Can't seem to find it in the menus. Did it change with the XT-3? I am using the 50-140 and want to set Image Stablilization correctly.
yes, ONLY if you have an OIS lens attached
@@kathodosdotcom On the XT-3, am I looking for image stabilization when shutter pressed? Don't think there is a label of IS mode 1 or 2 on the XT-3.
It’s not under AF/MF settings its on page one of shooting settings
would I be better with the 50-14mm with the 2x teleconverter. If i don't need up to 400mm but still want further then 140mm?
telecons on zooms is the cardinal sin, ultimately
Hi there,
I own the 200 500 that I use on my D4, D700, D810 and I love it ... BUT, i can't travel with all my gear and I also got a Fuji X-H1 that I bought in order to travel lighter but no to compromise that much on the image quality. My use for this 100 400 mm would be 80% of the time to shoot aviation stuff. From fast moving jets to airshows with prop driven planes, stunts etc and 15% of the time to shoot equestrian and horse events.
Is this lens a good option for this type of shooting or should I just stick to my 50 to 140 with the TC 1.4 on it, loosing reach of course ... ?
What can the people that have used this 100 400 for aviation and airshow can tell me ? Thanks a lot :)
can you email me ?
@@kathodosdotcom Sure Ken, thanks for the quick reply ! Which email address should I use in order to contact you ?
Is there an advantage in using an X-H1 vs. an X-T2 with the XF 100-400? What about an X-H1 vs. an X-T3 with this lens?
Hey Ken would you recommend using IS mode 2 on the 50-140mm lens as well & is the only time you would use IS mode 1 for under an 1/80 sec. What about in continuous mode?
any and all OIS lenses when hand holding faster than 1/100th second :)
in CONT AF, both act the same way
this is for single AF mode
Thanks bro!
Late to the game as usual, I am. Just bought a used one. How do you think it compares with the 50-140 image quality wise? I own one and I'm happy with that. Have there been any firmware updates that make it perform better?
Where did you get the yellow Nikon sun shade decal?
ebay
Thinking about this lens now that the price has dropped $500. Its about $1,400 now. Also what do you think about this lens on the XH-1 with the IBIS?
Ken, I need this same answer.
Would it be better then to purchase a fotodiox adapter and the Nikkor lens instead of the Fuji 100-400?
for what to what?
X-T1 for birdshots. Sports probably not since AF is null and void
I am looking to buy the fuji 100mm - 400mm zoom at my local online store in Switzerland. The Jan 2021 offer is 1,307 chf (1,127 usd). However this version is referred to as an 'IMPORT' while the regular fuji 100mm - 400mm lens that is priced at 1,507 chf is not. What does this mean when they refer to a lens as an IMPORT? i thought they were all IMPORTS?
grey market, no local warranty is the diff
@@kathodosdotcom Thanks makes sense.
Dear ken I follow ypu and love your videos. Thanks for all your contribution to the comunity. Once you had in your hands the X-T4 recently, what are your thoughts about the 100-400 attached to it. Is it better now? Thanks in advance!
Is mode 2 on camera or lens or both?
What was the noise? Another Mouse trap?
PS: My first copy of the XF 100-400mm was a bad sample, zoom ring wasn't smooth at all ... now the second one is way better.
heheheeh, it was yes
Ok i ddnt see this comment before . Lol that caught you off guard:)... Nice rebound though 👍
I love my D500 with 200-500mm for bird photography but here's my question...
Given the D500 with it's 20.1MP sensor, would I get more cropability with the 26MP X-T3 and the 100-400mm?
I mean given a small bird, will the X-T3 @ 400mm give me more pixels covering the bird that the D500 @ 500mm? (Let's not worry about the D500's better dynamic range for now). I'm only keeping the D500 and the 200-500mm for bird photography but if I can get 'as close' with the X-T3 and the 100-400mm I may consider selling my Nikon.
hey richard!!!
In good light yes.. But at higher iso u cant crop as u start to see more noise.
All I've heard and seen is that the D500 with the 200-500mm lens is THE wildlife setup (if you don't mind the weight).
I love my fuji xf100.400 that I have over a year. Quality is decent and I can take it everywhere, even for traveling!
I have experienced what I consider excellent results from this lens since November last year shooting aviation and wildlife photographs on a X-T2.
Tim C when using this lens on a tripod, do you turn Off image stabilization?
Well i dunno what problem reviewer get with ois... But min lense has awsome ois... I can shoot at 1/60 at 400mm handheld.
I feel it has best ois of any lense i have tested so far.. Its insanely good at 1/60 what else u want frm it?
waiting on my 100-400 to come back from repair. cutting in and off, smelled a faint burnt plastic smell in the zoom collar area. good tip on IS 2, that explains a lot of my missed shots besides being a noob to birding.
Hi. I appreciate the video and the good info. One suggestion - I thought there was a little too much repetition of several points. Maybe tighten it up a little? Thanks!
Probably wont get answered but you only said VR and Image rendition. How is sharpness, which is very important to wildlife of action photographers. How is weather sealing of the lens compared to the 200-500? How does the auto-focus acquisition compare? Tracking on the 200-500 is superb, is the 100-400 superb as well? I have rented the 200-500 a few times and recently sold my Nikon kit for XT3 kit. the 100-400 is on my short list, but curious if you could touch on these points? So far, I have never been disappointed with your recommendations, but I am wondering how sharpness and acquisition are compared to the 200-500. It might be a bummer to have to buy a used D750 and use the 200-500 for wildlife vs having the 100-400 for wildlife. (I shoot mammal wildlife so mostly static subjects. Acquisition accuracy matters more to me than speed.)
I also have the D500 200-500 kit and was considering trading to get the XT3 kit like you. How's it been so far?
I own xf 100-400mm and its awsome lense. Its very lightweight and ois on this thing is out of this world.. I get tack sharp pics of still birf even at 1/60th.sharpness is comparble to 200-500 on dx body but on fx 200-500 is better
I dont think so 200-500 is weather sealed n sample variation is big.
But u get more reach with 500 n not to mention big weight almost double the weight of xf100-400.
Focus trackjng is better with 200-500 if on d500. With older bodies like d7100 its comparable to xf100-400 with xt 2.
Ken can you tell the difference in is mode 1 or 2 with smaller fuji zooms. I don't seem to have a problem in mode 1 all the time. Would it help battery drain to a noticeable amount??? Thanks steve
lens needs to be OIS lens of course.....yes, not all the time, but too often
So what was the noise that startled you?I we hit rewind over and over trying to figure it out. Lol
mouse trap!!
Should I select ISO MODE 2 with the 50-140mm?
Francisco Silva any lens with OIS and faster than 1/100th
I mean, if I bought a pricey lens like this and it returned blurry photos, my first guess was to change the IS mode and look the results.
I have a question. What to buy? Expensive fuji 100-400 fuji, or fringer adapter and tamron or sigma 100-400 ?:)
Ken, can you update your review of this lens on the X-T4? Thanks...plus it is on sale May 2020 for $1,399.
ive already used it on the XT4 actually , remember i had the XT4 for a month
@@kathodosdotcom You put out so many videos. Did you talk about it while reviewing the X-T4? If so, I'll go back and look.
what about the sigma 100 400, its made in japan too, and is smaller and a lot cheaper
i heard you ask something about junk that people sell with glass in it
was that more mouse money i heard :)
IS mode 1 and 2?
Dont you mean low and high?
nooooooooo
First
Minnesota or Montana ??
i meant minnesota
Well the thing is 500 bucks less now.
$1399 now, good value I believe
I just got mine 1200us dollars no tax and free shipping brand new.

@@mysingingmonsterspmg thanks
this lens or the sony rx 1v ????
bought this lens and the xt2 for wildlife after watching this and reading that it is great....its NOT! trust me i had about 10 keepers from over 2000 photos taken on it. it cant follow birds in flight, it just cant keep up with them. the focus on a still bird is ok but always misses the eyes. save your money and buy a canon 7d mk2 with a 400mm .6 canon lens and you will be amazing at your keeper rate for less money
You can get the 50-150 2.8 AND the 2x telconverter for the same price as this lens so it's a no for me
Prashanth Panicker If you look into Fuji's lineup you'll find that the 1.4x and 2.0x are exclusively compatible with their 50-140 2.8 and 100-400 4.5-5.6 zooms. Don't try to tell me that purpose built accessories to these lenses shouldn't be used with them.
Damn you! You convinced me to NOT buy something.
i did?
@@kathodosdotcom Yes. I think I will wait on this one. Might just jump in on the 200mm f/2. Ever since I have gotten into fixed focal sharpness, I am having a problem going back
This is still not helping me with my photos. I can't seem to get a sharp shot at 400mm unless the subject is within 20 feet from me. Should I just purchase the Nikkor 200-500 and put it on my d7200, or can is there something I can do to get good shots at 400mm on my xt3? I'm ready to sell my Fuji gear and go full Nikon. What's your take on this?
At 400mm there's no reason not to get a sharp image, to test your steadiness use a tripod with is off, and es shutter keep it above 250ss, or higher, if your seeing your images sharper then you know it's in settings or your hand holding, use continuous mode with is on, I've found I get more consistent shots in continuous mode as the is works better if in single shot your is depending how you have it set up may only work when you hit shutter and you'll get out of focus shots. Good luck.
@@mysingingmonsterspmg I took the lens out on a hunt this past Sunday and shot well over 500 pics with it. I have found that the 400mm is soft around 5.6, but one stepped up to 7.1-9 it becomes very sharp. Thanks for the input btw. Now I am having issue with getting the video to work well in premiere pro. The fuji video settings are a bit more complicated than what I am used to so it could be something I am doing wrong in camera. The issue is once I import my videos to premiere and play them back, they are very choppy and unwatchable.
Keith Dunnivan I never use continuous or eye detect. When I zoom to check focus its off 99% of the time. I went full manual which kind of made the xt3 a stinker for me. Prob my lasy Fuji, im not sure.
sorry this lens or the sony rx10 1v
This guy is so pompous.
