    I am really happy to hear from you about Myles Kennedy. He is my biggest inspiration ever and forever. I train almost everyday to sing like him since 2004 and I am not even close yet. You did a good job introducing stuffs and characteristics of his singing way. Therefore, you should know that Myles only use half of his vocal potential in Alter Bridge. I would like to invite you to experience his job in The Mayfield Four and Citzen Swing and now at Slash's side. Try the songs 12/31, Summergirl, Big Verb, Fallout, Inner City Blues and Eden from The Mayfield Four and Battleground, Not For Me, Far and Away and among others out of the new album. Perhaps you know all this songs but if not, please try and make more videos with these great tips. Thank you!

    Your mentionings were quite right, it's just not that helpful for most.
    Myles unlocked his full vocal potential when he mastered his soft palete to rise up completely. The result is a huge tube of space in his throat. Also, he has trained his voice to be sung from the head resonances ONLY, NO MATTER in what range he does the onset.
    His technique is outstanding and surreal.
    Anyway, it's cool that people appreciate his work and put out such videos to give a little introduction.

      Glad you found my old videos helpful! With CZcams demonetizing most every smaller channel, and with my career in voiceover getting busier and busier, making these videos just wasn't a good use of time anymore. Also, I'm terribly paranoid that something I've said in one of them will be either misunderstood or poorly attempted (or maybe I explained it wrong) and will result in someone hurting their voice. All my videos are based on trial and error techniques I've used in my own music and aren't from schooling or formal training - viewers beware!

      Алексей Медведев John Cooper is a grand mystery to me, honestly. I've seen him perform live quite a few times (I used to work for his record label, actually) and I don't know how he sings the way he does without causing vocal damage. His raspy style sounds like it should be damaging but he's been doing it forever, so I have honestly no clue. Sorry!

    Hey Schii I think you forgot to mention how Myles gets his insane vocal endurance. I want to have the ability to hold notes for 30 seconds too!!!

    • @TheSchii
      @TheSchii  Před 9 lety +2

      passwoed100 Honestly the mix voice doesn't take a lot of air to produce the sound-- I can hold notes for 30 seconds as well. Endurance in the form of note quality (keeping the pitch accurate and strong the whole time) just comes from vocal strength, and vocal strength comes from practice. Good luck!

  • @volcajohann
    @volcajohann Před 9 lety

    I've said it before and I'll probably say it again: Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth... he's got some death vocals that I just need to learn~~
    Great video as always!

    • @TheSchii
      @TheSchii  Před 9 lety +2

      volcajohann I would be happy to do a video of Mikael Akerfeldt's growls, if it was possible for any other human to replicate that beastly demonic sound. Haha. He's on another level. I could tell you how I'm pretty sure he's doing them but because his cords are so thick (just listen to how deep his speaking voice is) it wouldn't sound the same if you or I did it, I'm pretty positive.

    • @volcajohann
      @volcajohann Před 9 lety

      ***** Hahahaha so very true... yet sad, in a way, to know that he's really that special. I'll just have to deal with it, but do you know, at least, a way to sound somewhat like him? I mean, his way of growling sounds quite different to many others y have heard... more raspy, yet clean, somehow... any tip would be much appreciated ^^

    • @OsoASeks
      @OsoASeks Před 8 lety +1

      +TheSchii Dude, you serious?
      Your speaking voice is very low/grunty (and very pleasant, nohomo)
      I can do some growls/fry (almost low as Akerfeldt's) and believe or not, I have a brutal asymmetry on my vocal chords (it almost looks like I have 1/4 of it on my right side).
      So, I'll say, TRY to mimic the sound of these brutal dudes.
      With practice you'll be able to sound similar.
      And also, I think is very important being exposed to this kind of stuff at a young age. Some friends say that my vocal range is some Baritone thing, but I can reach up around F#5 (G5), and that's because I sang Bon Jovi, Queen, Maiden, Stratovarius and Sonata (among others) at an early age, and in the other hand Dimmu Borgir, Slipknot, Cradle of Filth, Emperor, Children of Bodom...
      Thanks for your video dude, pretty neat! lml,
      PS: Sorry if there's any mistake, eglish is not my native language :P

    • @TheSchii
      @TheSchii  Před 8 lety

      +OsoASeks I have a pretty damn brutal growl myself (check out czcams.com/video/fXcLtsZf_eY/video.html for proof) but that being said, Mikael Akerfeldt is still way more brutal. He's the king.

    I don't know if you've heard them before, but Phinehas is a Christian melodic metalcore band kind of like Killswitch Engage, but they're pretty unique in their sound. Their vocalist, Sean McCulloch, has a decent clean voice, but his screams are absolutely beastly. He does the low growls, and the standard metalcore screams, but he also does these shriek-like that I can't really explain. I guess I can only suggest songs to get an idea of what I'm talking about:
    - Blood on my Knuckles, the opening scream "Face your *wrath*!".
    - Twisted, "Hell is not low enough to contain your *depravity*!"
    - Fleshkiller, throughout, but particularly the second pre-chorus rendition, "When the die is cast, when the die is *cast*!" and the "*Yeah*!" right after the solo
    - David and the Gate, "There is more to life than living afraid to *die*!", "Lest you be food for the *fire*!", "Pull the chains and watch what was rooted *fall*!", and some of the later pre-chorus renditions, "It's the apathy of being *alive*!"
    In all of those songs, particularly at the points I emphasized, he does these really powerful high screams, and I was just wondering two things:
    1) What technique is that considered? I've been working on my screaming and I'd love to be able to scream that way, though I try to take it a bit at a time because I don't want to risk my singing voice. :P
    2) Could you possibly do a tutorial video on those types of screams?
    Anyways, thanks for these videos, they are definitely helping me out in my pursuit of studying the voice and improving my own. God bless!

    • @TheSchii
      @TheSchii  Před 9 lety +1

      Cool man, I haven't heard of them. Listening to the first scream in Blood on your Knuckles, it's just a (well done) fry scream, with some delay, reverb, and double-tracking to make it sound enormous. Nothing too terribly unusual. You can hear a similar scream (without any effects) at the end of my old "Learning the Compression Fry" video on my band's channel, czcams.com/users/invictamusic. If you look up my band Invicta's song "Generic God" on Spotify or iTunes, you can hear some similar screams too.

    • @jakobfel2
      @jakobfel2 Před 9 lety +1

      Yeah, I have both of the Invicta EPs, great stuff by the way! Circles and Blessed Assurance are probably my personal favorites haha. Anyways, I figured most of what Sean did on those screams had to do with various effects but I was just curious if he might have been doing some sort of different technique you hadn't covered yet. Thanks for the reply!

    ...don't want to be troll or disrispectful, but your video continues to show on the tube... Myles is about 50 years old. He sings since he was a teen, at least, and, professionally over 20 years. Moreover, even if I prefer not to compare him with natural monsters like Cornell or Plant, maybe due to his unmatched technique(at least in rock music), he can sings higher than them, and, for sure, he is one of a kind from a natural and a technical stand point. Nobody, I mean NOBODY can sing like him after a couple of video from the tube, and I strongly doubt any young singer can match him, or replicate his technique, that, has already 20 years of studies.
