  • In this video, Mike Schii teaches you how to sing like one of the most incredible metal singers of all time - Bruce Dickinson! Teaching a variety of different techniques and terminologies, this video discusses the difference between chest, head, mix, and falsetto registers, raspy singing, compression, vibrato, diaphragmatic breathing, resonance, and much more!
    Stuck on some of the techniques you've seen demonstrated in this video or any others? Mike Schii is now available on limited basis for one-on-one video lessons, through his profile at www.bandhappy.com/profile/mike.... Send him a message if you're interested.
    M. Schii is the lead vocalist for Nashville's finest progressive metal group Invicta, and to see the techniques he teaches employed, please check out our channel / invictamusic for some great music videos and other material.
    We just released our second EP album "A Portrait of Home," and if you like what you hear, supporting us by purchasing an album is greatly appreciated. We are unsigned, so every purchase goes towards more merch, gas money, or other band-related expenses. We couldn't make our music without you!

    Hey man. Great video. Vocals are kind of an invisible instrument so instruction is challenging. One has to describe it rather than show it. I've watched other videos that attempted to explain the head/chest blend thing and I gleaned a thing or two but yours struck home.

    @alexiswoodbury7326 Před 9 lety

    That mixed sound you're doing, I get it but I'm wondering if it's just because I have something strange about myself... but all those 'different from regular chest voice' sounds are sounds that I can sometimes do and some other times they're just flat out impossible to do to what I feel is a lack of flexibility in my throat or whatever... got any idea about that?!

    • @TheSchii
      @TheSchii  Před 9 lety +1

      Consistency improves with practice. It's taken me years to be able to consistency hit mix notes with any real sustainability. And really only in the last few months have I gotten what I would call a control over it.

    • @alexiswoodbury7326
      @alexiswoodbury7326 Před 9 lety +1

      ***** Oh that's reassuring! But how did you actually practice that? My teacher has me do the ''maaaaaa'' and ''moooom'' soundsstarting high in mix voice and then descending... it's been going well for like over a month last summer and now it's been almost totally impossible for a few weeks... that's so weird! :P

    • @Anjohl
      @Anjohl Před 9 lety

      ***** I don't know if my terminology will make sense, but I often refer to a nice sounding hard rock/metal high note being one where you as a singer can "get under it" and PUSH it up. I wonder is this the mixed voice you refer to? One where you are not out of breath using falsetto, but still going high?

    • @TheSchii

      +Hubert Torzewski Not really -- it only sounds that way because the crappy built-in microphone on my video camera doesn't show contrast very well between loud and soft sounds. It's pretty damn loud, trust me.

    @PotawatomiThunderNew Před 9 lety +3

    Don't take this the wrong way, I don't mean to talk down on or discredit you or your technique, but what you're saying about vibrato isn't necessarily correct. If you're singing correctly you will naturally have a vibrato, which more or less comes from your vocal chords kind of vibrating or oscillating back and forth. It's not so much as something you do yourself by manually going back and forth between two notes.

    • @TheSchii
      @TheSchii  Před 9 lety +10

      PotawatomiThunderNew I'm going to disagree with you thoroughly. There are multiple ways of creating vibrato, and my vibrato is a controlled, manual thing. It is an oscillation, yes, but it's very much something I can turn on and off or change the intensity and speed of the oscillations. My technique is different from the classical vibrato that is just an ever-present shimmer all the time.
      I use the "two-note" thing to help people find somewhere to start exploring the concept of vibrato. I'm aware that experienced singers don't consciously vascillate between two notes, but it's similar enough that it helps people new to the concept begin to practice.

    I’ve been singing since I was 13 and mainly I sing Bruce’s lines and songs and I will be the first to say that it’s not easy.
    Longest I have sung was a road trip with one of my buddies when we drove from one duty station to another. I sang for about an hour and a half maybe two hours, by the end of it my head was aching, my eyes wanted to pop out of my sockets and my stomach was sore as all hell.
    When I read Bruce’s biography I knew he would talk about his vocal style and how he feels about his antics on stage and jumping around like mad.
    I have mad respect for my vocal idol and it has been a dream of mine to sing in front of my vocal hero. I’d probably feel as he did when Ian Gillan heard him for the first time.
    His style is very physical and you’ll be filling buckets of sweat and the fact that he still does it at 60 goes to show his vocal prowess to this day.
