How 'No Way Home' Pulled Off Spider-Man's Bridge Fight Against Doctor Octopus | Movies Insider

  • "Spider-Man: No Way Home" first introduces legendary Marvel villain Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) on a New York City bridge where he faces off against Peter Parker (Tom Holland). Behind the scenes, the cast and crew filmed on a set in Atlanta and the rest of the bridge and skyline were created in part by Digital Domain. The final fight scene was achieved through a close partnership of visual and practical. Because Doc Ock's mechanical arms were completely CG, special effects supervisor Dan Sudick had to make actions like dropping a cement pipe and throwing a car into water barrels look like they had the right amount of force. Then, visual effects supervisor Scott Edelstein and his team had to create entire shots from scratch if the trajectory of a stunt wasn't correct. And while Digital Domain used digital doubles of Spider-Man for some of the more dangerous stunts, Tom Holland still pulled off many of his own moves on set.

    It’s so strange to think that most of it gets replaced with CG in the end. I’m sure most executives probably ask why these things need to be filmed practically at all. But the reason it looks so good is because the CG department has a near perfect one to one comparison to base their animations off of. It’s both impressive to see the craftsmanship as well as the fact that we’ve finally reached what seems to be the perfect balance of CG/practical integration.

      As some VFX artists have said, its always better to shoot on set and not do everything in post. You get a certain realness that you wouldn't get if fully done in CGI. And even if its not used you get a great reference for when you gotta remake it in CG

    While I Love the practical tentacles from Spider-Man 2, the advances in technology really allowed them to show Ock full tilt with every tentacle doing something different at the same time at incredible speeds. Really showcased how unprepared MCU Spidey was to go up against Ock.

    • @kumarsaurabh9216
      @kumarsaurabh9216 Před rokem +5

      Also, Doc Ock wasn't fighting as badass as he used to. Compare his bank fight scene and train fight scene from Spider-Man 2, to that of any Doc Ock scene in the MCU. You'll see how powerful and agile he previously was, which this movie didn't showcase well.
      I'm not saying it has to showcase. Probably as far as my understanding Doc Ock didn't need to put much effort to beat Tom Holland's Spider-Man anyway. While for Tobey's version, I think by now we know exactly why he has to (put his best effort to beat Spidey).

Accepting real life physics and not altering the in-camera look as much would in my opinion only serve the movie better. Don't get me wrong, I loved NWH but some things just look too animated.

    It would be crazy to see an experimental look at how this would realistically look compared to them calculating and creating the scene that would visually express how well they calculated this without a scientific explanation

    I know everyone here is praising them for attention to detail and I really appreciate their efforts. But the thing that bugged me the most, and perhaps they didn't think of it through, is about the cars in other lanes and cars on other highways. Look, I don't like mentioning stereotypes but this movie is set in America. Even if mouse is killed on the 8th lane and a car on the 1st lane will stop with a lady screaming her lungs out, "What's going on over there? Someone call 911 or an ambulance." (Just citing some lines from Fluffy's comedy show). If you have a man with 4 mechanical arms roaming around the roads, destroying public property, there's no way people around be going so smoothly like it's Monday, need to get back to work or my boss will fire me. There would be cars stopping everywhere, people taking pictures, making snaps, reels and whatnot. So, that's something they needed to look into. I know I'm nit-picking but other than that, the shots were soooo awesome! Just reminding that there was still a room for improvement.

    VFX is usually the first way to do the work, if VFX can’t do it, it’s time for CGI…both are the unsung heroes..
