- Rukia Kuchiki is one of the most important characters to feature within BLEACH, she was the one who gave Ichigo power, and the individual who forever changed his fate. In this video I go through the past of Rukia, her relationship with Renji Abarai, Byakuya Kuchiki, Kaien Shiba and Ichigo Kurosaki. This is the most comprehensive deep dive into the first character that Kubo designed when he had first come up with the concept of BLEACH. So let's break down and analyse Rukia Kuchiki and understand her various appearances throughout bleach.

I love JJK but it pisses me off when someone says its the series that’s setting the standard for strong female characters.
Rukia is one of the greatest female characters in anime history.

Bleach has the best of the best females in shonen, I´m a girl and I hate when people say only JJK or Demon Slayer have good female ones. Berserk has good ones (Schierke, Casca, Farnese), Bleach (almost the entire female cast but Orihime, I can´t stand her), Dragon Ball (I hate when people disrespect c18, Bulma and Videl), Jigokuraku (the entire female cast as well), Inuyasha, One Piece (Robin, Carrot, Big Mom, Boa Hancock, etc) and hundres upon hundreds... the ones that say that are anime trenders or 15 y/os that are getting into manga/anime now. Well she did though, she gave him *her* powers. The entire substitute Shinigami arc he was entirely using her powers while his lied dormant and unknown to both of them.
Rukia is an example of a strong, well written and expertly handled character done right. She's powerful, vulnerable, flawed and inspiring. Seeing her growth throughout the story will never fail to bring a tear to my eye and just seeing the panel of her standing there, flushed in the cheeks and in her captains coat has me fighting back tears as I'm typing this because it's like seeing your friend finally achieve their dreams. She will forever be my favorite character in Bleach and God Damn 2022 can't come fast enough.

The fact that Rukia was able to defeat one of the Espadas without her bankai says a lot about her raw power and potential. No wonder she became a captain after the time-skip.

In my opinion, she is the secondary protagonist of the story, and she is my favorite character. And to me Bleach wouldn't be not only possible, but it wouldn't be what it's if it wasn't for her. She is such an important character that i was surprise when she wasn't on the road to the Ichigo video, exactly because of the bond she and Ichigo share that you clearly went on detail on this video.

Genuinely one of the best Character. Her peak as a character for me was definitely in the TYBW arc for the reasons you mentioned. She was well developed and created to be Ichigo's partner rather than lover. Great character.

At 11:45 I just realized something with the parallels between Kaien and Ichigo when it comes to Rukia. Rukia stabbed Ichigo (twice) to give him the power to protect the ones he loves, and it helped him overcome the trauma he had with his mother's death. She also stabbed Kaien to set him free from the Hollow that killed him. She used the same Zanpaktou to take a life/give ''life'' with her power. It's like she's the ''key'' in a sense when it comes to making destiny happen. It's also not a coincidence that Kaien and Ichigo are related and she has such close ties with both of them. The way Rukia influcened and changed Ichigo to have the power to protect throughout the whole series is the equivalent way she impacted most of us in almost the same matter..
I'd argue that one of my Rukia's best trait is her selflessness, which serves great points to her character development, like her moving on from Kaien's death, giving her powers to Ichigo and her loyalty to Byakuya and etc.
Honestly, as mad as I can get with Rukia and her selflessness, I can only see myself in her.. Rukia isn't just best girl, she is a hero.. My Hero ♥️

As much as I want Rukia to end up with Ichigo, I got to appreciate their platonic bond more and more. Not much manga can portray platonic soulmate as natural as them.
Even if they got together, the best aspect of Ichigo and Rukia relationship isn't romance rather it's their chemistry that is enduring. Their friendly banter and sly remarks about each other feelings skills, opinions or choices(like Rukia wanting to live in Ichigo closet 😆), just shows how comfortable around, and how much they know about each other that it still surprises them when people ask if they are a couple.
The fact they are completely platonic but still better than most romantic relationships in other shows is probably what makes their relationship so easy to ship 😆.

I've always been drawn to characters/relationships over plots. Rukia is honestly the main reason I was ever interested in Bleach. She is one of the most fleshed out characters and is a central presence in the lives of so many of the cast. Her relationship with Ichigo is not romantic but it is the strongest soulmate bond I've seen anywhere. This is one rare instance in media where a platonic bond is stronger than the romantic ones, at least based on what is given focus to in the story. After all, Bleach is about one boy and one shinigami - the story of destiny. Something about Kubo's writing style and paneling is just so nuanced and understated, but it makes it that much more impactful. People talk about his character designs a lot, but I honestly think his greatest strength is developing the different relationships between characters.
Rukia is a cool character and has the best bankai design in my opinion bleach has alot of depth despite what ppl think

Rukia Kuchiki. One of the very few characters where romance isn't necessary to bond with your opposite. Ichigo didn't love Rukia, but he owed her his life for saving his family, and in return he saved her life from execution and repaired the Kuchiki family as well. I love this symbiotic relation they both have.
It may sound corny but I keep thinking that Rukia and Ichigo are soulmates because they really complement each other perfectly. Not only in a romantic way (which tends to be superficial) but they know each other very deeply and truly care.

I always blush when the people in Bleech did ask about their relationship because if it's this obvious for everyone it would seem so easy for them to get together.
However, if there is one thing that might help, their Platonic relationship is an actual love as the OP said, just not romantic.
It's even possible that their relationship is even more important to Ichigo and Rukia than the ones they have with their romantic interests.
Kind of like Soul and Maka from Soul Eater. Their relationship goes beyond ordinary friendship, almost intimate, but not necessarily romantic. I never saw either pair (Soul/Maka and Ichigo/Rukia) as being romantically involved, but their chemistry are platonically special.
She becomes a Captain, with her husband still as a Lieutenant, whose Captain is her Brother in law.
That must be an awkward dynamic.
I don't think Rukia would make Renji feel belittled by his position, nor would Renji care. He isn't that insecure.
@@DBZimran I like to think that Renji now loves serving under Byakuya. At first he wanted to surpass him but after their battle and Byakuya defending Rukia he has nothing but respect for him, he's a great second in command and by no means weak.
on a more fluffy note, I'm just imagining Renji to be the type of husband who's so proud of his wife's accomplishments he brags about her during get-togethers like "Hey you know what??? My wife's a Captain! Yeah that's right! Isn't she just amazing??"

As for her character, very well made. Her using her Bankai was not only a great surprise, but so damn cool (pun intended?)
You know, I had this thought recently, but the Soul Society owes Rukia an impossible debt. It's mainly cause of her that Ichigo joined the fold and helped save the SS. I mean sure, Aizen set it up, but no one else in the SS would have dared share their power with Ichigo. The pride everyone there has, they would have let the hollow kill them and everyone else. Rukia's humility, intelligence, and empathy is unique to her.
Eh. None of these attributes are unique to her.
But "SS" owns a lot. Given they almost executed her for no good reason.

That man defied SS custom twice, but the one time it mattered most, where her life was on the line, he not only chickened out, but willingly played an active role to her execution at least 3 times. Heck, when he fights Ichigo he says when he's done here he'll chase after her and cut her down himself. You can't say he was brainwashed by Aizen or the SS, he was fully conscious and aware of his actions the whole time, and all Ichigo did was call him out for being a butthole. That sob story about him being conflicted is just a manipulation to earn pity points. 😕

She did what was right giving her powers to Ichigo that night even if she faced execution for it. Her requesting mercy for Ichigo and his friends while grimly yet stoically facing death spoke volumes of her character even if she eventually shook it off when Aizen played his hand and she came to terms with Kaien's death. She deserves her marriage to Renji and subsequent family/promotion. Her being in the thick of battle for her friends and allies only add to her badass repertoire.
Technically she did not expect an execution as a punishment, since that was not Central 46's ruling.

Also it was so easy to take away powers from Ichigo. He got double penetrated in the sweet spots and he lost powers... And that was common knowledge.
So Rukia did ultimately nothing wrong.

I wouldn't say she deserved to marry the man that was originally intent on killing her. A man that was like a BROTHER to her. Yeah no. She deserved to be with Ichigo like Isshin got to be with Masaki.
Rukia Kuchiki is extremely underrated! She’s one of my personal favorites from Bleach. I really love her bond and care towards Ichigo. During the Soul Society we saw her gripping/coming to the terms of death (despite it inherently being something she did not deserve). Her battle Aaroniero showed us a more psychological side, and that she was hurt badly (emotionally) after the loss of Kaien. Which ultimately gave her the resolve to actually get back up and defeat Aaroniero because Kaien left his heart is in her. I could go further, but yeah Rukia is awesome and best girl!
Honestly best thing was watching her slowly and naturally grow over time.
I actually finished the whole video first before commenting because I’ve been waiting for this for so long. Even though I have liked some other female characters in the anime, she’s still the character that I would say I really love and not just like. For me she represent what a woman is: beautiful with grace, strong yet fragile at the same time. Kubo really illustrated her well and I think thats what makes me believe that Kubo really treasures his female characters and that he doesn’t only focuses on his male casts.
Rukia is a amazing character. When I think of inspiring female characters in Anime or shounen manga I immediately think of her. Even today, Rukia is still such a standout to other female characters as she isn't a love interest to the lead protagonist Ichigo but rather a genuine friend who is probably more important than even his romantic interest Orihime in his life.
Although not downplaying Orihime either, she is the kindest person in the series and Ichigo motivation to enter bleech version of hell.

I think there is one important symbolic aspect to Rukia.
1. She pierces through the chest of Kaien, she does not control anything, she wants to escape. She does not want to.
2. She pierces through Ichigo in the beginning of the series, she is left with no choice while facing the problem. She hopes it will work.
3. She pierces Ichigo again, she is in complete control, it's a plan of her devise, it's a way to fix the problem. She knows it's the only way, she wants it.
This tells a lot about her development, given her trauma after Kaien and doubts that pushed her almost to "suicide by Soul Society" mentality after "the first Ichigo stab". In the end, she uses both of them to restore Ichigo powers. The sword and the society.
I agree that the bond between them is more than just some romance. That's how life is too. The sad truth is, that above the friendship/friendzone there is indeed romantic love, but above that is a hybrid of the two. "Soulmateship" of sort, where you just make a special "extra slot" in your heart for such person and never feel doubtful about it.
When gin walked up to rukia and says "good morning rukia dear" and then proceeds to claim he can save her butttt plot twist JUST KIDDING "Rukia screams" omg stills give me chills
You didn't mention the moment between Rukia and Gin when she was about to be executed. When Gin just easily shatters her resolve for her own death in a matter of seconds. I think that scene said a lot about both Rukia's and Gin's character. But Rukia's facade was already covered really well in the video. I just always liked that scene because how messed up it was.

Rukia is a truly wonderful character and easily falls into one of my all time fav characters in anime I can't get enough of how much she grows through out the story. Bleach is one of the few Shonen that truly know how to handle female characters her bankai is amazing i can't wait to see it when the bleach anime comes back great analysis as always
seeing rukia use the gokon tekkō glove on ichigo for some reason was the most iconic thing an anime character had ever done at the time to me. she made me want to watch bleach, so all props to caption kuchiki.
Rukia is my absolute favourite Bleach character, and her fight with Aaroniero is not only one of her highlights, but in my opinion, one of the most well-done fights in the series. I wanted to highlight a particular subtlety that Kubo included there that really ties the narrative up perfectly. So, that fight is all about Rukia being stuck in the past, clinging to and being incapable of moving on from her grief and guilt surrounding the Kaien incident. At the beginning of the fight, Aaroniero evades various techniques Rukia uses in her Shikai, proclaiming that he has knowledge of them because Kaien helped her develop them. At the end of the fight, however, Aaroniero is caught off guard by a technique from Rukia's Shikai that he clearly had no knowledge of. Ergo, a technique developed either without Kaien's help or possibly following his passing. Rukia uses a technique that had no connection to Kaien to symbolize her moving on from her feelings of guilt and letting go of the past. It's great stuff.

I think im a minority, but Since I was young and Watched bleach I was sure Rukia and Ichigo will end up with each other. I still hold this opinion to this day.

I'm not a huge fan of anime anymore but I still look fondly on this character...

It's interesting how kubo has the skill to draw some of the most attractive female (and male) characters of all manga. This show has some of the most attractive women, yoruichi, matsumoto, Orihime, Harribel, Nell....
And rukia it's still the one people love the most. It's a good example of how a personality can truly elevate someones attractiveness. (Not saying shes ugly of course)
Also I love that her and ichigo as friends. I think to show platonic love is as important as to have romantic love.
She's the prettiest girl in bleach imo, second is Unahana.

I was waiting for this video. She is such an underrated character in terms of her growth. One of the best relationships in Bleach is Rukia and Ichigo as platonic soulmates who understand each other. The contrast of Ichigo's Hollow Form and Rukia's Censure of the White Haze. Also Death and Strawberyy between them. Many moments strengthens why Rukia indeed is a perfect match for Bleach as a side character and she cannot be replaced. Definitely BEST GIRL :)

I've watched many of your videos and have greatly enjoyed the deep dive into the characters. It's all very entertaining but I will say your dive into Rukia was wonderful. It explained quite a bit, and even some points that I had missed. Ultimately, you and I seem to agree on a great many points. This includes the fact that she ended up with Renji and the full circle and closure for Rukia's story with Byakuya. In my opinion Rukia was one of the most influential and pivotal characters in Bleach and while Orihime held a great many factors and vectors for enabling other characters growth I feel that Rukia not only provided a catalyst but she was integral to the stories formation and ultimate conclusion.

Ah I can't say shes a favorite of mine but I do definitely think of her as an icon of Bleach just as Ichigo. All I'll say was that I enjoyed her juvenile fun childish antics that lighten up the atmosphere often times, whether it was with Ichigo or Renji with their comedic skits. But I honestly enjoyed alot more the dynamic of Rukia and Renji from their flashbacks and how strong something was there.

One cool tip bit about Rukia and Ichigo as you mention at 22:32 , Ichigo's father Innshin Kurosaki aka Innshin Shiba is part of the Shiba Clan. Isshin is brother to Kaien's father. Making Ichigo and Kaien cousins. They both look exactly the same and act the same. Knowing that when Byakuya said that, it makes so cool that even then Kubo was thinking ahead when building the lore and world of Bleach.
