    video #2: • pt2 Neurosis "Burn" ~ ...
    In this video I react to Burn by Neurosis. This is a new band to me.
    A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
    I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

    Thank you for checking it out Dean! To some Neurosis fans it might have been an odd song to start with, they might have wanted something heavier off "Through Silver in Blood". But this track has always really spoken to me for some reason, and is the opening track to one of my favorite albums. I'm really glad you enjoyed it. Cheers.

      This record was my introduction to neurosis. It was fun to work forwards and backwards from this point. The early stuff is dark but worthwhile if you appreciate heavy music. Nothing like it on earth.

    Neurosis are fantastic band, and the fathers of whole 'post-metal' genre

    You might have to react to something from the great band ISIS. Maybe, "So Did We" from the album "Panopticon" or any thing from any album they ever made. ISIS is one of the great Prog sludge Metal bands ever. They were on the same label as Neurosis and toured with Tool. So Yea.

      Dean actually reacted to ISIS once before, I think it was "Threshold of Transformation".

    Ooooh, you're going down the very dark alley of Neurosis who made what is known as experimental post-metal (in fact, they're viewed as the pioneers of post-metal). They're taking textures and forms of metal and twist them into something very unique. Another band in this was Agalloch hailing from Portland, Oregon who created their own blend of folk, metal etc., all drenched in mood and atmosphere. They don't sound like Neurosis but it goes along with the whole idea of post-metal. I guess it's similar to progressive metal where you'd be hard pressed to find bands that sound even slightly similar; like for instance Dream Theater vs Opeth vs Tool, bands that sound nothing alike, they have their own very distinct "personalities".
    "Post-metal is a style of music that is rooted in heavy metal but explores approaches beyond the genre's conventions. It emerged in the 1990s through the work of bands such as Neurosis and Godflesh who transformed metal texture through experimental composition. Associated with and inspired by post-rock and post-hardcore, the genre employs the darkness and intensity of extreme metal but emphasizes atmosphere, emotion, and even "revelation", drawing on a wide range of sources including ambient, noise, psychedelic, progressive, and classical music to develop an expansive but introspective sound."
    "Post-metal is closely related to avant-garde metal and has also been associated with sludge metal, drone metal, progressive metal, and industrial metal. Alternative names that have been used to describe the genre include and , highlighting its connection to art music and shoegazing, respectively."

    Neurosis for sure are an interesting band. Not your ordinary alternative/metal band.

    • @scyphe
      @scyphe Před 3 lety +2

      They're a completely different beast (experimental post metal) with a different idea of what to do with the textures from metal and turn it into something completely different and often oozing of darker emotions.
