    Congrats on being the first Neurosis reactor! Hell yeah! I recommended Locust Star because it's one of their "shortest" songs, and it's one of their popular ones too. But yeah, not all of their songs sound the same, but the core heaviness and sludgy-ness remain.
    There's so much I could recommend from them. "Through Silver in Blood" is another popular one, but it is over 10 minutes. "The Doorway", "Fear and Sickness", "Lost", and "To Crawl Under One's Skin" are some good ones. There's too many to recommend though. I highly recommend listening to their albums on your own, if you choose not to react to them though. They create such a heavy atmosphere, and they've been consistently putting out highly acclaimed albums for 30 years.
    If you'd like to explore more different music from other groups, here's the list again!
    Cynic (metal/jazz fusion) - Space for This
    Battle of Mice (post/sludge metal) - Bones in the Water, or The Lamb and the Labrador
    (Pretty please!)
    Zeal and Ardor (experimental, black metal) - Row Row
    DALEK (rap/post metal) - Eyes to Form Shadows
    Between the Buried and Me (prog. metal) - The Coma Machine
    Chelsea Wolfe (gothic, experimental) - Hiss Spun
    Massive Attack (trip hop) - Pray for Rain
    Sigur Ros (post rock/ambient) - Brenninstein

    Its 3 members on the band singing on this song. Its not any overlay. Its what it sounds live. Ive never tryed to analyze neurosis lyrics after enemy of the sun. You just floathe with it. Its no clear political message or any of that stuff. They were doing a shitload of acid around these years 91 to 99. And alot reflects on the lyrics. I was touring with them on 96. They was so intense and serious about their music and the whole concept of what they did spiritual. It was beyond. Best band i ever experience live

  • @Yosef1952
    @Yosef1952 Před 5 lety +9

    Powerful instrumentals, agonized vocals. I think the lyrics are secondary in a lot of tracks one hears, more vehicles for expressing feelings than conveying thoughts, or for eliciting mental associations rather than making a direct point. Just my two cents. I would love to hear you react to "Escalator Shrine" (the studio version) by Riverside. I realize I've plugged this one before. But it really is extraordinary, IMHO.

  • @alek98
    @alek98 Před 5 lety +5

    Great to see Neurosis reactions. I also really thought you hit the nail with a lot of the words you used to describe their sound. Through Silver in Blood is definitely their most abrassive and agonizing album, since it was made at what the members have described to be probably the lowest point in their lives emotionally, which is why it has such an intense sound that I'm glad you noticed.
    Just as a small extra, the vocals are not layered, the band has 2 main vocalists (Scott Kelly & Steve Von Till) which can sound very similar at times and the bassist Dave Edwardson (deep voice at the end) also performs in several, mostly older songs.
    Really encourage you to try some of their other songs! They have a surprisingly diverse catalogue and at least 5 albums that are really top notch musical efforts, so you almost can do no wrong with whatever song you pick.

    Through Silver in Blood is a pretty fantastic album; it's one of those albums like Ænima or Antichrist Superstar that all of us gen-X-ers were listening to at the time. Neurosis never garnered the same mainstream appeal that Tool or Manson (or even Ministry) did though, which is too bad; they're a great band.

  • @Dead_Sleep
    @Dead_Sleep Před 4 lety +3

    I was anticipating your reaction... lol You seem relatively young, and as a seasoned fan of this band... who I never got to see live, but I saw their own biggest influence twice... the band Swans... anyway... killer review of this track and your first time experiencing them... some people don’t get music like this... they are the forebearers of what’s called “post metal”. Yes there’s simplicity to the music, and minimalism is key to the sound. Cool to see a person of a new generation like this bands sound... that being you. Great review. You felt it.

    • @Dead_Sleep
      @Dead_Sleep Před 4 lety +1

      Also, I don’t know if this is true or even how true it is... he wrote this after his wife and daughter died in a car crash? I don’t recall where I read that bit of info from... so definitely don’t take my word on that.... and the meaning does incline toward spiritual and philosophical ideas. “The Will to Power” is a book by Friedrich Nietzsche, an existentialist philosopher who said “God is dead” and he’s been known for that from the get go. And also the lines “that which is below, is as that which is above. And that which is above is as that which is below.” That if I’m not mistaken, is related to the Occult origins of Thelema and I think Aleistar Crowley? I forget, but I know it’s related to the occult.

      Juniio nice, in my late teens I decided hardcore punk, grindcore, and extreme metal weren’t enough, and slowly started exploring across the board of anything, especially in independently released music. Now there’s too much out there that I can hardly even keep track of unless I have it downloaded and archived . Can I give a recommendation? It’s dark ambient music... Deathprod - Treetop Drive 3.

    You're right buddy, it's not technical musique, but certainly one of the most darkest of all times. Let's try "the eye of every storm" from the same band, and, if you enjoy this band, after their debut period, "through silver in blood", Times of Grace" and "The eye of every storm" are, according to me, their bests albums. This band belongs to my trinity, with Tool and Meshuggah.
    Without Neurosis, Bands such Krueger, Cult of Luna, Isis, Mastodon and so many, many more wouldn't exist.
    A french fan from Neurosis since 1996.

    Song is pretty awesome. Never fully got into Neurosis, though I always respected the little I had heard. Also in part because they influenced one of my favorite bands ever; Isis -- They do a lot of Neurosis type stuff, but they add in a bit more 'delicate' moments that are actually reminiscent of Tool (who they toured with in 2006).
