The crypt what you see that had the broken vault door that was the coffin you were tapping on. Those coffins were from the 19th century and even before. Not like the elaborate coffins / caskets you see in the 21st century. As as funeral director for 30 years I have dealt with removing coffins from that period, housed them at my mortuary until refurbishment on the crypt was completed. All it is is ust bones inside and sometime the clothing depending on the material could still have pieces still in the coffin.
Cool. Thank you for the info!
22:15 The lettering on that wood spells "Head"... So that's probably the whole casket... Damn.
Our local main cemetery dating to the eighteen hundreds has similar old monuments and at least one very old family mausoleum constructed of heavy granite stone in poor disrepair on otherwise well kept grounds.
A side wall has separated from the façade and right there when peering through the inches wide crack is the corner of a casket.
Apparently it's up to the family or trust to maintain these but you'd think to avoid potentially bad press that the cemetery would make the repairs.
I would agree there’s a cemetery out here in San Jose California that has a old chapel and underneath it is an old underground mausoleum and the cemetery doesn’t let people down there anymore & it doesn’t give you much information on it my thought is there’s probably a lot of disrepair down there and they don’t want the bad press as well
@@CryptDoor If you ever come to Maryland, in Baltimore across the street from the VA Hospital is were Mr. Egar Allen Poe and family are burried.
There's a grave you can look down into and you see the old coffins and a cloth swing hammack is there. If you say "hello" sometimes you'll see the hammack swing .
The church also has graves under it that sometimes people can go see it.
If you go into the back part of the cemetery there's a famouse General buried there. And if you go to the other side of the church a mother is there with her many children that died so young. She spent a long time there greaving for her kids and you can still feel her sadness. She's buried with her children.
In the front of the church a little girl was burried there and I think her dad may have died from a broken heart.
Not far from where I live there's a big hill that lights up at night from all the solar sticks, plus more graves are up top.
Shipping crate for casket - very similar to what is used in shipping deceased by aircraft. Could also be an "air tray"
My 4th great grandfather was killed when a tram overturned and crushed him in 1890. His fellow workers must have liked him, as they all chipped in and got him an expensive, large ornate tombstone. They must have also had a sense of the macabre, as atop the tombstone was a carving of a tram with the number 37, the very same that killed him.
Was that James Logan who is buried at Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney? I remember seeing the grave many years ago.
@@ajp2223 Yes, that's him.
I enjoy your cemetery tours. Do you ever get depressed looking at these? Thinking about death? I know we all die, but sometimes I get depressed and can't watch. But I enjoy the history
No. I’m happy talking about some of these individuals and keeping their memory alive.
The Huntington one, two on bottom and Marie Louise on top was probably mom and dad on bottom and daughter on top. That's beautiful ❤️
There's a lot of history in that cemetery which is approx. 150 years old. The eyes are drawn towards the biggest & baddest monuments & structures placed over many acres. I often wonder if families bother to visit their ancestors. Once bodies are buried or entombed, I'm not sure if there are additional fees for maintenance & upkeep or families are responsible. When cremation became popular, the wealthy strayed away from building huge structures. It's interesting to see how everything withstands the test of time.
Found your channel the other day and can’t stop watching it! Every video is so interesting and love to hear the stories of graves you feature.
Thank You! 😁
HEAD on that casket likely means the head of body.
I've seen it on cardboard cremation boxes that are used in place of caskets for correct orientation when placing the container for proper flame distribution.
I'm assuming the casket in your video was so simple that when closed was difficult to tell which end was which.
Oh yes after the fact I figured that out but in the moment I was so shocked that it was open & Exposed I didn’t see the D. Haha. Thank You 🙏
If you ever make it to Detroits Elmwood cemetery there’s a marker for a fighter pilot killed in WWII that has a plaque affixed to a half of a propeller. I found that very unique.
Thanks for the information you shared at individual locations. Really enjoyed your
work. Rich or Poor, they are ALL dead. RIP
Enjoy your videos. The history behind some of these graves are very interesting! Thanks
Hello and best regards from Germany.
"ruhet vereint" means
"rests united".
Thank You!
Love ur vlogs especially the wood casket . Keep them coming
That cemetery rules keep filming i love that place
Great Egyptian revival. "HEA" - HEAD You go in feet first. Yes the coffin, maybe an outer is exposed. Report to staff. They should place back the broken piece and patch it.
Yeah after I stopped filming I thought about it and figured that was probably head but it looked too square to be an actual casket
Possibly a container that the casket went in?
@@CryptDoor Still nasty. This has to be repaired by the staff. Or the skull thieves will be back. They do break into old ones for skulls. Lucky he was in a heavy crate. Or he may have been sitting in a display.
@@CryptDoor in old days some people made there own out of word like that so it veary well could be the casket
Wow...crazy they didn't put the plate back. Great vid today..nope never heard of that actor.
Nice seeing your videos 🤩🤩 Thankyou.
Love the video. There’s something about graveyards that fascinate me. I just made a video on one
That wooden casket vault (since it’s inside a mausoleum enclosure can be wooden… and the “hea” lettering you saw was to indicate which end of the vault the head of the casket was at. It matters as to the direction body’s are laid to rest… but who knows if the cemetery workers paid a lot of attention if family wasn’t up on their facts… but that is what the lettering was painted onto the end of the vault…
The body also could have been shipped to the cemetery and the lack of family possibly would mean they just took possession of the deceased and placed them into the mausoleum… and since the body was shipped it leans even more to the head/feet labeling…
I wish a person or organization could adopt a mausoleum. Be responsible for at least keeping it clean and maybe a fund to be shared to maintain them for bigger repairs. If you continued to keep them maintained we would not have as many falling into such disrepair. Like they do to keep roads and highways clear. I’m in Texas but would participate myself. Thank you for the video and telling us the stories. I’m a retired nurse and hubby an Archeologist, we.visit cemeteries almost every weekend and between the 2 of us have discovered a lot of great history. 😀
Thank you
The new mausoleums they build today won't last as long as these solid thick granite ones
So sad that the families built such elaborate private mausoleums and as time went by, the deceased were forgotten. The structures fell into disrepair and there is no one to repair them. I’ve seen some that were condemned and roped off.
Yes. My guess is before a certain time there were no perpetual care funds to maintain these.
From what I understand now days for a private mausoleum the owner pays a fee that goes towards maintenance
We’re I live we don’t have any Mausoleums or Crips we just have cemeteries and Graveyards. I’ve never seen a mausoleum in person
I found your channel today on Faces Of The Forgotten. This is a cool video. Be careful touching things inside crypts. Lots of bacteria there. I hope the damage was not due to vandals.
Thanks for checking my channel out… and oh yes I’m constantly using sanitizer and washing my hands after I visit cemeteries
Re: HUNTINGTON, that is most likely a columbarium built to hold cremated remains. the openings are stone plugs sealed, handle in the center.
HEAD - so they know which end to slide in first. You’re lucky he didn’t knock back.
Amazing video can't wait to see part 2 . ❤️
Thanks for the video very interesting.
😳 WOW!
I wish I wish I wish there was something we could do about CZcams ridiculous spam! THREE 20 second commercials unskippable to get to your video lol. Good video by the way bro
Very enjoyable Tony! Thank you so much👍
Thank You…
Your excellent commentary is fascinating.
Amazing that's a wooden casket. I wonder if they are descendants of the original cemetery move from San Fransisco
Could be but there were people that were telling me that that could be a storage container kind of like a vault and the casket could be inside
@@CryptDoor Oh no kidding, double the protection! No doubt its lasted over the years, for wood. The knock that rocked!
The pyramid was very cool. Sad it appears to be crumbling.
It’s old on top of which our super super special San Francisco earthquakes as well.
I caught a quick glimpse of the lettering on that box HEA...the whole thing said HEAD! I wonder if thats the end of the box or coffin the head is on? I dont know what else it could be!
After I stop filming I thought about it and figured it was probably head
You do a great job with your videos.
Thank you so much great job loved it
Thank you, very informative!
Thanks for sharing🪦🪦
Thank You for watching
Rest United!!
Ruhet vereint = rest united (together)
Hea probably means head I’d imagine
Yes I agree
Good place for small creatures to find shelter.
That place is bigger than the town I live in.
Ruhet vereint - rest together

The words on the Barkhaus grave are "Ruhet verient." ... using google translate i get "Rests united." which i can only guess is a german equiv to R.I.P.?
Ruhet vereint = rest united = rest together. The German equivalent of Rest in Peace would be: Ruhe in Frieden
A mower could have hit the bottom of it and broke the lower one.
thanks
Is that hea d for the direction the body is placed in the wooden box ??
Yeah after I looked again. I was able to make out what it was head
I always wonder why it is that caskets and people buried long ago don't, given what happens to a dead person and time....leak out while placed into these above ground buildings.
I can’t speak for ones like that built so long ago but from what I understand they are built with good ventilation and drainage but like I said one that old I have no idea
The reason is natural ventilation. The body is able to gas off and decay naturally. Most of the time, almost mummifying. Hence there being no mess. The ones you see today are leaking because of new coffin designs that are “air tight”. Families buy these thinking they will preserve the body due to being sealed, but they actually have a negative effect. Bodies are going to putrefy regardless. When a body decomposes and begins to gas off, the gas has to have somewhere to go. The pressure builds up in these over time, finally blowing out. Another thing that happens, is that when a body is embalmed and begins to liquify, the lack of ventilation does not allow it to dry up. Instead, the body lays in a soup like state, until the liquid causes the bottom of the casket to rot or rust through. Thus pouring out and making a mess. Want your body to be well preserved? A simple pine box will do a better job.
I've seen some horrible leakage stains in mausoleums over the years Ashlee. Yuck!!
14:46 my dad died on his birthday August 7th 2009 after his 60th birthday party he went home, he was murdered. I'm still in shock.
I’m sorry to hear.
My condolences
Hope they got life for doing so
Ruhet Vereint= Rests United
I wonder if that guy was in the Shriner of America....as a 33rd Mason
Barkhaus ruhet vereint means in english resting together
I wonder who holds the keys to the masoleums? Family, Cemetery?
I was told by somebody I know that works at a cemetery in most cases both but in the older ones sometimes keys are lost over the years
Ruhet vereint is German for "Rests United"
Thank You
Out of curiosity, do you report damaged graves to the cemetery staff (if the property is maintained) such as the one you came across today?
Yeah I let the grounds keepers know
The Barkhauses died 10 days apart.
Loosely translated ruher vereint means "rest in peace".
It means 'resting together'. Rest in peace in German would be Ruhe in Frieden.
What kind of camera is that really clear !
Go pro hero 8
@@CryptDoor Thank you 🙏
Why doesn't anybody fix it up?
I was thinking the same thing
@@CryptDoor Did it smell bad like rotting bodies?
Not at all they died probably in the 1800s early 1900s I’m sure
I read once that for these kinds of mausoleum it is up to the property owners to fix them not the cemetery because they were built by their owners and not the cemetery!
Hea= Head
Yup. 👍
Why don't you ever go to the Catholic Cemetery adjacent to Mountain View???
Saint Marys?
Mouth and word movements aren't at same time and it's keeps stopping and starting
Not sure Why that is
Why would you laugh about that mans death at the bank. Have some respect. Cancelled my Subscription.
Ummmmm, yeah I was laughing at the fact that it is so old school that he drew his own pistol that he was armed as well. But thank you and I wish you well
