If someone told me in the mid 80's that Chris Nilan and Jay Miller would be exchanging in a friendly manner in the future i wouldn't have believed it. They had the most fiery battles i ever saw.

I love the mutual respect with these guys. Loved Jay with the kings. At one moment in time, there was Jay Marty and Baumgartner at once. Thanks for the memories guys!
My wife and I were season ticket holders with another couple during that time. I HATED the Kings, but loved hockey, so we would go to the 20 games a year for five years. I always thought the best of the three was Bomber as he never seemed to lose. It was short-lived though when Bomber was traded to the Islanders.
Two warriors that share how tough their roles were and the ups and downs of their lives as a result. So glad I took the hour to watch this. The tough guys are always the best guys and teammates!! Look forward to stopping into the courtyard before Jay retires. Thanks for all the memories fellas. Two honest players beloved by their teammates and fans where ever they played!! #ultimaterespect

The Raw Knuckles is the best hockey Podcast on the planet!!! The MOST phenomenal hockey stories (and life stories) come out of these conversations. Hats off to Chris and Tim!!! Jay was hilarious!!!
Dave Brown was awesome also! I hated him as a Ranger fan and he was great with Chris and Tim.

@@stanthealohaman Knuckles is a great communicator and his recall is fantastic. I'm amazed how many of the guys become friends later.
Nilan had a radio show a few years back and had on Fotiu and they got along great and at one point Nick apologized for decking Nilan with one punch in their second fight that is never seen. Nilan had hit Peter Sundstrom a cheapshot and on a line change Nick went after Nilan and punched him a shot and that was that! On the show Nilan said that was a great punch Nicky and Fotiu said I'm sorry for that Chris it was cheap.
Nilan was so happy that Fotiu had beaten Behn Wilson and they agreed that most guys are good guys but Behn Wilson was an asshole on and off the ice and his teammates hated him. Nilan was like Nicky Boy I was so happy when you beat up Wilson and that last shot almost dropped him.
Fotiu was humble and said Chris I didn't really like to fight like you did! He said in my first year in pro in the ECHL I played like you and fought everybody and Nilan goes you had 451 penalty minutes that year combined on the Cape in 85 games and Nick said I wanted to establish myself and then felt as I went up to better leagues had to stay out of the penalty box or I would of been gone!
@@jacksmith5692 Jack, I agree with you 100%. Knuckles is a fantastic communicator. And Tim does a great job too. Those two guys have a knack for making their guests feel comfortable enough to share the stories a true hockey fan would love to hear.
@@stanthealohaman I loved when Chris goes Red Fisher was a prick in his Boston accent. I lost it!
Red Fisher the HOF writer was arrogant and acted like he invented hockey. Every time the Rangers went to Montreal he would be on with Bill Chadwick and talk about pompous!

I used to read him all the time in The Hockey News and he was excellent but he was some piece of work!
This is an epic podcast. Both were among the Top 10 fighters of their time and perhaps of all time. Much respect and it's so cool they have total respect for each other.
oh wow the great Jay Miller! A criminally underrated NHL enforcer and one of the best hockey fighters of all time. He and Knuckles had some epic fights as did Jay and the great Dave Brown. Miller fought and beat just about every great NHL enforcer of his era, which was probably the toughest ever. And these two here were two of the best and meanest ever. Jay had such great endurance like Marty McSorley did and could never be counted out of a fight. Excellent balance too. Great to see these two talking. What a joy it was to grow up watching these legends and other greats like Dave Brown, Bob Probert, Stu Grimson etc drop the gloves and fight each other and protect their teammates in real time. Boston was so tough too with no just Jay but Lyndon Byers and power forward Cam Neely.
I grew up in the 80s on the East Coast of Canada as a big Habs fan, so I loved Knuckles of course. I'm currently nursing a bad back and have had lots of time on my hands. It's been so enjoyable for me to be listening to most of your episodes boys! The interviews are very down to earth, very personal and natural. I give both of you - Knuckles and Buster - real credit for providing such a great podcast. You guys are both such good listeners and you're both funny - that's a great combo. Also, you guys continue to dip into the mental health aspect of the human being and are providing a great tool that counters the woke ideology that is so pervasive in our culture, and without really trying to. Thanks boys.
Oh, and to note: Sorry Knuckles. I watched that game 7 against Hartford and I couldn't track down your famous backcheck. You were actually in the box serving a coincidental minor when Peppy scored. Haha.

Being from Québec i used to be à habs fan but with Ray Bourque the Bruins had a spécial place in my heart....it was à pleasure hearing some news from you guys. In my next visit i Will go to Jays restaurant for sure and would be happy to meet him

Love your podcast, Chris. I met you about 10 years ago at one of the Toe Blake golf tournaments - I played with Yvon Lambert. It was such a great event, and you and all the team members were terrific. Best wishes to you and Tim for a great continuing partnership.
I always felt Yvon was screwed. He was demoted when the NHL had a bias against guys around 30 or older and he had a fine year in Buffalo and then was sent down the next season to Rochester. Yvon could play and why he was sent down I'll never know?
Then in the 1990's all the old guys hung around with all the expansion and the league going to an all checking NHL. If you were willing to check and focus on defense you could have a job forever! Guys like Kirk Muller sucked for years and yet kept a job as a checker. He was a shadow of his former self and yet kept a job for like 8 years being garbage and yet like 12 years before a Yvon Lambert was demoted when he was still a good player!
BTW, Yvon Lambert could fight also!

These interviews are pure gold. You guys are putting together a legendary catalog of shows. Every week I am just amazed what come out. I still remember the "you're f-ing dead" after Nilan suckered Paul Boutilier game. They were not kidding around in the Garden that night.

Chris, these podcasts are really good, thanks. First one I saw was over an hour, and I thought no way I'll watch the whole thing. Couldn't turn it off. Thanks for taking the time to do this, and I loved your time in NY with the Rangers.
I got to watch these guys battle nightly on satellite TV through the 80s.
Miller and Byers were a treat to see.
Remember the Bruins Brought Jay up from the minors to fight Nilan every time Chris was on the ice .
After 8 fights , the Canadians brought up Kordic to counter Jay . I never missed a game.
Nilan was the Bruins arch enemy, and everybody loved to hate him.
It was a sad day when Milbury acquired Nilan to play for Boston. I was nose to nose with him myself.
Great episode!! Always great to hear a couple of old school warriors exchange stories. I can listen all day!

I love your podcasts I’m 68 in 3 weeks from out side Edmonton been watching hockey since the early 60s Chris your really good at your job interviewing it’s all honest and funny Tim is good also . One thing I can watch to the end each one usually .
This is priceless... we loved Jay.. hated Chris.. I love to see them hash out the old days... nobody could ever say they didn't have balls of steel. Chris got to play with the elite Habs players that I used to love seeing in Boston. God bless both of them!
I absolutely loved this Podcast... I laughed when Jay mentioned the Black & White TV with the Rabbit Ears Antenna and Tin Foil on them to improve the reception... Dad would have my 3 brothers & I forming the human chain holding hands with one of us holding the antenna, as dad would direct our positions... The Boston - Montreal rivalry was epic.... Only thing close was the Yankees - Red Sox.. There was a guy on Buffalo that Jay had some classic bouts with called Kevin MaGuire... Another that comes to mind was Gord Donnelly.

Great show knuckles, life time habs fan, but I always respected jay Miller, good player never thought of him as a goon. Tough man just like you.
His puck handling, end to end rushes, touch around the net and pinpoint shot accuracy were tremendous.

I ran across Chris' podcast and love his approach. I was at his first game as a Ranger at MSG. I saw him play for Northeastern. His honesty on his struggles is inspiring, but he also makes me laugh. I really wish all the guys from his era would go on his podcast, they are fantastic. I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors, seems like a great guy

I could vision Brown participation with a sense of respect and a bit of humor. Miller on the other hand is still in post beat down trauma from all the punches he absorbed from Brown.
Loved Jay Miller as well as Chris Nilan. Every time Miller was on the Ice Fred Cusick, Derek Sanderson and Dave Shea all said were gonna see something now. And the Beff stew was on!!
The Curtain! Great to see everything turned out well. Great stories! Those games were wars on ice. Your eyes would pop out of your head in disbelief. Todays game is so much fun to watch but those days it was another level

another very good interview you three. enjoyed discovering Jay MIller as a person not as the fighter i did not like back then. they had a hard job to do i lift my hat in respect for what both did Chris and Jay . and the others also that kind of job you cannot do for 18 year career. impossible in those days.

Loved jay miller, my brother and I taped every fight he had as a Bruin. Also nilan was tough and bruins Canadian games were the best. Saw it once at the garden and you didn’t disappoint. Thank god you were both around during the best hockey .

Both these guys were remarkably similar in that they were not the biggest guys but always handled themselves against the biggest and toughest players. Each one seemed fearless. Any "heavyweight" would likely have wanted to avoid them because neither would give up and could make the bigger player look feckless..

Absolutely love this. Being from Montreal, I lived for the Boston Montreal rivalry. The Miller vs Kordic fights were insane. You knew they would fight every game. In the '88 playoffs when Richer took a slash that broke his hand, The Habs brought up Steven Fletcher for some retaliation. The next game you knew there would be fireworks. Miller vs Kordic and Byers vs Fletcher fought at the same time. Even the TV hockey broadcast was ready for it, and showed both fights on a split screen. Fucking crazy.

Fletcher just hung on. What a waste he was.

@ 32:30 "Forget them what about Rick Tocchet the Toughest kid that ever played."- Jay Miller ...Jay was my brother's favorite Rick was mine. Not knowing they'd already fought half a dozen times We argued Eventually scrapped. Laugh about it now in Our late 50's. Two of the best.

I am the same age as Miller & Nilan.When Nilan buttended Middleton I went crazy. I swear if I had been in the garden I would have went after Nilan. Lol

This was a great interview . As a die hard Habs fan I remember disliking Jay Miller just do to the jersey He wore although it sounds like he is a stand up guy as a player and as a player . Like how these guys became good pals . 👍👍

Nilan was from West Roxbury not Roxbury. Both are neighborhoods in the city of Boston but there are many differences between the two.
One of my closest friends growing up was John Cunniff's son so I was fortunate enough to go to a lot of Bruins games when he was Terry O'Reillys assistant coach. I remember we would stand up before the puck was dropped if Jay Miller was on the ice anticipating a fight shortly after the puck was dropped 😄

I could listen to this all day. Getting my yearly VHS tapes in the late 80s and 90s, could i ever fathom a day in the future, we would get to watch these legends again discussing all the great battles of the previous decades

Golf caddied for these two legends at Nantucket Golf Club around 99/2000. They were guests of Brian McLaughlin who is mentioned on this pod. 2 absolute gentlemen and 4 of the funniest hours on a golf course in my life!! Cam Neely was also there and the drinks cart was refilled quite a few times. Jay was quiet reserved and quiet with a killer one liner while Knuckles never shut up and was just hilarious. Great times!!!
As a Bruins fan from Montreal that hated Nilan and thought I was going to watch just 5 mins of this , ended up watching the entire episode. Good atuff and appreciated the clarification on the Middleton incident.

One is a product of his times. Seemed more authentic back then. More naive, more grounded, loyalty was a thing, stuff was low tech. People could take a ribbing, everybody laughed more, didn’t take stuff so personally, or carry a grudge so much.
Now everything is a worry and people suffer no fools, can’t make a mistake and reinvent yourself or tell a stupid jokes. Plus things are so specialised now, no spontaneity.

Its unbelievable how many kids, American kids, especially from New England, were influenced to play from watching Bobby Orr in the early 70s. This directly coincided with the 1980 gold medal win and the influx of American players in the NHL

Of course you, @KnucklesNilan30, now know that both you and Jay Miller went to Northwood. Well, tonight I walked past my mother while she was watching some hockey thing, very unlike her, and I was confused. She said she had heard about a doc that talked about NHL fighters. She couldn't find it, but she found something along the same lines. She was intrigued because two of the people in the original show she was searching for were Northwood graduates. I was too young for "Knuckles", but you visited years later when i was around 5th grade. What struck me is how big your fists were. As for Jay Miller, well, I remember you, not just because I watched you play at Northwood as a boy, but because my married mother, the married librarian, and the wife of the ski team head all had a little, indecent crush on you. Last name: Hannan.

Love Jay. Got to meet him when I was a kid at the Tip a King event at Culver City ice rink. I don’t quite understand why he said that probert would throw a couple punches and then be done.

I'm a Rangers fan since 1970 and my late Cousin Richie worked for the Rangers from 1965 to 78 and was in John Ferguson's book called Thunder and Lightning on 5 pages and Fergie called Richie his Best NY Pal and I loved Nicky and Chris and always said I wish Nick Fotiu played like Chris Nilan who was a warrior. Fotiu never fought after 1979 when he destroyed Holmgren and Wilson in Philly!
Just imagine Jay Miller in a Leafs jersey.. I always wanted to see that back in the day.
