- Zeal & Ardor may be avant-garde, but they are far from inaccessible. An intriguing blend of African-American spirituals and black metal burrowing into the horrors of slavery and police violence, frontman Manuel Gagneux's music tackles serious subjects while drawing on influences from Mayhem and Burzum to Deftones.

I have followed this Z&A since Manuel Gagneux stated posting concept stuff on CZcams. I saw them live in Atlanta and bought a drum top with a goats head drawn on it and signed by the band. Still my #1 favorite band of all time. They don't keep or change their sound based on what worked before, they have an entirely new sound every album and all of them are gold.
For those that can't speak German, after the interruption at 32:50, Gagneux says:
"So, we've got some technical difficulties... but I think we'll just try [again].

How can you not love this guy? Btw, the crowd was yelling for him to drink another can of beer.
The most pleasant surprise to me when I saw them live was just how funny the guy is.

@@savinjo You mean, what they did to fix the issue? Apparently, a server controlling the lights and sound system crashed, so they had to reboot it.
@@h.a.9880 That's overexaggerating a bit. Cause all that worked during the break. My guess would be the backing track from the band (Click Track, Time Code) crashed. They could perform without, but it makes it al lot easier for all to have a system to keep everything in the same rhytm. Backing Tracks are most of the time server bases for syncing purposes
@@teze9853 Honest to god, I have no knowledge about such systems whatsoever, so I merely related what Gagneux said during the concert.

@@Sparky666-iy3wc warum sollte sich Zeal and Ardor auf den Weg machen und all die Werte der Musik die sie erschaffen mit einem selbstzerstörerischen Frauenhasser wie Kavorth zusammensetzen? Und soweit ich weiß macht Nergal nicht mit Menschen die nicht "klassischen" Black Metal machen. Also ein Gatekeeper für Kreativität.
Behemoth sind schon lange kein klassischer Black Metal mehr,auserdem
gibt es keinen "klassischen Black Metal"
Es gibt Bands wie Master Hammer,alte Celtic Frost oder halt Norge Truppen wie Mayhem/Dark Throne(alte) oder wieder andere
Truppen wie Aanal Nakkrath(schon eher grind für mich) aber unterschätze den Nergal nicht,der ist nämlich ein Hans dampf
in allen Gassen...zu Kavorth,bei dem ist viel

Manuel keeps sounding better holy fuck. His harsh vocals are peak of his career and man those fuckin harmonized growls
Every show they do is better and better. Manuel is crushing it.
Is he using the left mic for growls and shouts, while he sings normally in the right one? See 28:07 and 28:18

A friend suggested watching this band, I had no idea what was coming, so when they started, I was genuinely surprised how quickly I got into it.
If you ever get the chance to see them live, do yourself a favor and go there. It's insane how much force this carries live.
I love a bunch of tracks, but I have a feeling this is just a band you need to experience live. These live shows on CZcams here really grab me more atm than the studio versions.

@@high2407 EXACTLY! The studio albums sound pretty good, but they are _nothing_ compared to the raw force of a live concert.
It's not just the sound system, that makes the ground shake and the air vibrate, it's also the stage presence and energy that you get from this band live.
And then it turns out that the guy behind this band is such a likeable, funny person, who puts a tiny bit of humor in between his Black Metal songs here and there, which really spices things up.
To anyone reading this: I can't recommend it highly enough, if you listen to this recording or the studio albums and it's just vaguely your cup of tea, you _will_ *L O V E* this band live!
almost the same thing happened to me, i was watching summer cause of kse and in flames but i kept watching it till the end, and this band, with a weird name came in, with a weird intro and fuck... it was almost instantly. When Götterdämmerung came, i was in awe. 2 months after and I know everything (maybe not everything) about manuel, the band and birdmask!
Was lucky enought to see them on their US tour last year. Was awesome even with the two bakcup singers not their cause they were sick.
Had a similar experience. I was about to head back to the tent after 4 exhaustive festival days when a friend say: "You can skip Zeal & Ardor, but you're going to regret it." So I stayed - and I'm very glad I did.
I've been at this specific concert and it gets better everytime i hear this recording again.
But the best moment is, when the server crashes and he mentions "Hey Arte!" knowing this will be on the internet FOREVER!!!
I was just introduced to this band and I'm obsessed, god damn his voice, they're voices together, the whole band, I cannot 😭😭😭 So freaking good it doesn't even make sense!
The crazy part is that the band was created from a racist comment on Soundcloud about mixing old slave gospel field music with modern death metal. Which born the idea of slaves converting to Satanism instead of Christianity. It's what inspires a lot of the call and return parts that were a staple of slave field music.

@@romanmeyer2907 Afaik, Gagneux, the guybehind Zeal&Ardor, went to 4chan (of all places) and asked what kind of music styles he should mix together for fun. Someone suggested Black Metal and _"n-word_ music" (well, you can assume that guy on 4chan wasn't shy to use the slur)... and Gagneux just rolled with it and created this great blend of music.

They say that the world is turning bleak and dark, and in some ways that is true. But then, we`re also living in an age where we have these incredible artists delivered to us at our home with excellent production FOR FREE. I just hope it is viable.

I havent been to a live show yet (im 25), i have had 2 opportunities that i didnt take, to see bands i love, once to see slipknot & once to see halestorm. I would *love* to reserve my first live experience for this band. Fuck my anxiety, this music makes me feel some type of way. I just know its going to be worth it.
If they come to your city, go. Best concert I’ve ever seen live. This show doesn’t do it Justice, even as good as it sounds. In person it’s insane.
I was lucky enough to be there and witness Zeal and Ardor's live performance. Apparently I've been living under a stone since I've heard nothing about them. My personal discovery of the year 2023!
Slowed down version of Scatman coming on to play them out was somehow the perfect ending I didn't know I needed.
If there was a single band worth the pain of 5 days of scorching sun it was Z&A for sure.
This was so good, I had goosebumps. One of the highlights of Summer Breeze for me. Absolute pleasure to listen too !!
I nearly went to see them by myself in Troy years ago when I still hadn’t heard much of them. Not going is one of my greatest regrets.
Please come back to North America.

This band is the bomb! I saw them twice already--at the Olympia in Paris when they opened for Meshuggah and at the Motocultor Festival in Brittany. And I loved them more each time! And every time I see/hear a new video/live, I'm like "My God, they are amazing!"
