That's because the metal parts are boring and unoriginal. If he did a straight metal album, it would flop. Everything else is cool, but he, just like Deafheaven and Myrkur, are much better just doing what they do best, which isn't metal.
As a norwegian metalhead -- "appropriate" all you want. That's not a thing here, and should not be anywhere. I love the music, run with it!
Appropriation just means taking from something, which everyone has done at some point, even Norwegians. There's only an issue if you take stuff from other cultures and either claim you made it or use it in a disrespectful way.

Well it is a thing here. So, Im going to say fuck that. If we can't do it, then neither should anyone else. It the absolutely only way to make anything sensible happen. If people are going to be treated unfairly, at least it should be consistent.
I just discovered Zeal and Ardor and instantly fell in love with the group. The blend they have is unique and raw, something that's hard to find in todays music.
We should also remember that rock and metal music heavily derive from blues and black music, so it makes perfectly sense to reintroduce these influences in modern metal.
The moment you become a purist, is the moment you forget music is art and not just your little social acceptance club.
Its awesome that new things are tried out and that styles that could be considered opposites can join together in a surprising blend.

Its not about purism. Its about consistency. If white people are constantly berated because they did something that someone not white might have thought about doing in the last century, then we should all stay in out niche. If people are going to be treated unfairly, then the at least it can be even handed. Its worse if only one group of people is treated unfairly, and the rest are treated well.
Four years later and they drop an absolute bombshell of an album, along with colab tracks from some of my favorite musicians. Really happy to see them succeed like this.

Black metal purists are a bunch of jackasses. They don’t own the genre, and besides black metal has been fused with so many other genres and zeal and ardor is a welcome addition to the black metal fusion scene. Keep up the amazing work!

And honestly. Black metal and Slave chants are both incredibly raw and cathartic. It really just makes the scariest blues I've ever heard.
I’m sort of new to listening to Zeal and Ardor, as someone who loves black metal I don’t really hear black metal in there. I always think they remind me of Gojira in a lot of ways. Does their older stuff have more of a black metal feel?

I love black metal, but I love it even more when it's fused with other things. We should never stifle experimentation, because it gives us amazing projects like this one.

Always gonna get some edgelords out there who hate anything that's not pure black metal or whatever, but in truth on the UK scene at least a lot of the artists and people making the music love this band because they're doing something interesting. I only heard them when they randomly came on my Spotify in the car and was like.. well that's different! Going to go see 'em play in an old church later this year!

Zeal and Ardor is one of the best things to ever happen to music. Plus Emanuel is fucking adorable and down to earth, which makes me love the band even more. He can sing, scream, AND shred that guitar. He genuinely understands metal, something very sacred to me, and how to manipulate it and morph it with other genres into something twisted and dark and beautiful. I think I'm in love.

I heard from this projekt the first time in an German public cultur radio station (a pretty large one). That interested me very much and I'm so happy to have found this music through that.

I have Zeal & Ardor's debut album and think it's really inventive by throwing new elements (field hollers and early delta blues into modern metal (there's some industrial stuff in there too). I didn't know he was American, not that it matters. Looking forward to what "they" do next.

Lol, that's not true. I mean, there were some good and influential extreme Metal bands from Latin America, such as Vulcano or Sarcofago. But Extreme/Black Metal was definitely not ''born'' in Latin America.
Perhaps a full discussion would clarify this, but I might agree with that. Check out the late 80's Colombian film: Rodrigo D which includes
bands with an early bm sound. I also remember interviews about Mayhem trading tapes with South American metal bands for influences. Also, Varg was wearing a Von t-shirt at his hearings.

When I first listened Zeal and Ardor I thought that it is bizarre and shocking and also good. Because irrelevant type of music genres were mixed together but the result was really good. I always loved avantgarde metal with bizarre attitude so Zeal And Ardor got my attention and admiration. Haters are just ignorants, I listen to black metal for 19 years and I never thought something like "black metal has to be pure" I love pure black metal so much but we need fusion bands like zeal and ardor. We need to broaden up our perspectives about metal and music.

What I love most about zeal and ardor is that they use the most racist music (black metal is racist, just admit it) , mix it with spirituals and express all their anger about racism and the reasons why an afro person would turn to the devil.

But the scene with its 'i'm so evil' attitude certainly attracts a lot of assholes. And racist are basically peak assholes.
