Mayhem React to Lords of Chaos Movie

  • Jonas Åkerlund’s Lords of Chaos film has been controversial for its stylized depiction of the events surrounding the turbulent Norwegian black metal scene of the early ’90s, including the notorious church burnings and the murder of Mayhem guitarist Euronymous. Now, Mayhem themselves have opened up about the film in an exclusive video interview with Heavy Consequence.
In the interview, which you can watch above, founding member and bassist Necrobutcher commended the film’s costume design and set pieces for their era-specific authenticity, but his praise ends there. After revealing that he met with Åkerlund multiple times, Necrobutcher said that the film “came out all wrong.”

Necro is right, the story was bound to be made into a movie sooner or later, it's just too fascinating and weird to not do it. He's also right that it's a sad story - how could it not be the way it ended up? Whether or not the portrayal of characters or events is truthful and realistic - who's to say but the people who were there? I really liked the movie as what it is, but then I never expected it to be a 100% truthful account. I do agree, though, that they should have brought on Necrobutcher as a script consultant to get as close to the truth as possible (if in fact his account of things would have been the truth).

The problem with the movie is they took it too far with the “humor.” Yes there were immature and cringey aspects of the black metal scene as there are with any but, for the most part there was some really brutal and serious shit going on. They could have maintained some of the humor while also keeping the vibe more towards the middle of funny and serious. It would have gave the movie a really uneasy vibe to it and would have encapsulated the raw energy of that scene.
It’s like if you tried to make punks out to be a bunch of confused kids by completely ignoring the drug-culture and politics within those scenes. It just comes off as the director being bullied by that group of people in the past and now coming for his revenge with a shitty dark comedy.

While I did enjoy the movie for that reason, I do feel that it focused way too much on the "lel edgy violent scene" than the influence the scene had on it's members. Like it didn't even bother going into how bands like Emperor or Darkthrone became inspired by Mayhem to become black metal. Plus in context, it pretty much tried to paint this image of Euronymous being someone way over his head, which while that part was true, it had been said that Euronymous got caught way too deep in the persona he built.

Honestly, I liked the movie. I really liked how much effort was put into recreating certain scenes and recreating the clothes the members and fans wore in the 90s. The actors looked like they had fun too with their characters and tried to do their best to make it seem like they really were the ppl they were portraying. I think the guy who played Euronymous said in an interview that he talked to a lot of ppl who knew Euronymous personally and wanted to try his best to be Euronymous. Also, I like this movie because it pissed off Varg.

Mayhem presently, seem like a band that just wants to write and express themselves through musical form. I personally was never familiar with the stories and lore behind the original lineup and seeing the various modern video presentations about them, sparked my curiosity. Maybe in that regard, has given them some new and positive exposure. It’s difficult for me to judge what’s been sensationalized and what’s factual. Necrobutcher definitely is so authentic in every clip I’ve seen of him, with this one being the most impassioned, His words show strong reflection and emotion.

Arno Burtner I thought so too, until Esoteric came out. It's a pity they hardly play Ordo at all live. I saw them for the first time back in 2009 after Ordo came out and they only played 3 songs - Wall of water ,Illuminate Illiminate, And Anti. The rest of the show was all the songs we've heard a million times( De Mesyriis/ Deathcrush songs) even after seing them recently they didn't play any Esoteric because they were doing the De Mestyriis album in full. I want a Mayhem show playing the last three album tracks only.
