You missed a win point. Although Joe’s big performance has some of the most beautiful shots in the film, its runtime is incredibly small, not even two minutes long. Compared to the ninety minutes of the whole film, it is almost disappointing how fast the moment comes and goes. That reflection is so meaningful because even though the moment cinematically is so sweet, glorious, and visually pleasing, much like how Joe feels while in the performance, it is insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Joe finds that out immediately. The moment we’ve all been waiting for doesn’t even satisfy the film or the viewer, in the same way it doesn’t satisfy Joe’s ambitions and success.

What I love about Soul is that it subverts the usual "pursue your dreams and don't care about anyone else" message that many, many western films have. It says that you can pursue your passions and have dreams but not being "successful" in those areas doesn't mean you've failed at life. There is no defining "purpose" or "meaning" to people's lives - all you have to do is live it.

So a fun detail that I noticed even after my first time watching: When the movie starts Joe is really careless and clumsy and that’s the reason why he gets himself killed. When he is a “mentor” there isn’t really a way to be clumsy but when he gets into the cats body he acts clumsy again. He jumps from the bed and falls on the ground, he accidentally scratched 22 after not being able to sit on his shoulders and you can go on for a while. The more he is in this body the more he gets used to being careful and walking elegantly like cats do. When he finally gets back into his body he suddenly isnt that clumsy anymore and that’s because he learned from being a cat. It’s a small detail and easily overlooked but I thought it was worth pointing out.

as a musician myself, who is still waiting for my big break, this movie shattered my heart into smithereens. Because me & Joe have one giant thing in common - our passion and dedication to pursue our biggest dream made us take a lot of little things and life in general for granted. Propably if I saw my life like Joe I'd think ''this was meaningless'' at first, too. Whenever something cool happens, I enjoy it but in the end I brush it off because it didn't lead me to my success (spare me in replies, I know how it sounds). When Dorothea tells the story about the fish looking for the ocean, I paused the movie to cry my eyes out. I still have no idea what my spark is, but right now all that matters is what this movie taught me - you're already in the ocean, enjoy every flavor, every sound, laughter, time spent with family like it's the best thing ever. Because it is. I began writing a gratitude notebook, everyday write down things you're grateful for. I'll be coming back to this movie anytime I need a lil reminder to seize the day.

Soul is such a different movie. It is not your regular ' kids ' movie (I hate it when people automatically count every animation film as a kids film and discount the importance of themes in all of these films because ' its just for kids '). It is just so mature, thoughtful and soulful (pun partially intended). You begin to discover many other aspects of this film on each viewing. It begins to resonate with you even more as you grow up. It truly is a wonderful film. If Pixar keeps going on this path, I am sure that they have a bright future ahead of them.

Okay, okay I know you weren't saying this precisely, but this is a kids movie. Saying it's "just" a kids movie is degrading and wrong, but it is a movie for kids. It's just as important that kids see and internalize these themes at the age they are now. And anyone can appreciate the beautiful animation that this movie serves up. Once again I mean no disrespect you have a nice comment, but I see so many people claiming that a movie isn't for kids just because it doesn't dumb itself down. As if kids can't appreciate these kinds of movies.

I agree with you. This is actually what I meant in my comment. I meant to say that people tend to count every animated film as a ' kids ' film (dumb and filled with body humor). I am not saying that kids cannot appreciate rich themes in a film. This is what I also meant for Soul as you get to appreciate its deeper meanings as you mature more in life but kids can interpret the messages of the film, too. Too often, I see making this mental barrier between ' kids ' films and ' mature ' films which is wrong. Just because something is being appreciated by kids doesn't make it of any less value. It has a lot of depth which remains unseen by adults out of ignorance or a strange notion of disinterest.
Films like Soul are for all ages. Most well made ' kids ' films are for all ages.

All the meaning of life stuff is great and all, but most people tend to overlook the scene where 22 becomes a lost soul. It’s my favorite, though, because it hits so close to home. Obsessing over something to the point that it consumes you, distorting everyone’s words to where they’re pure insults, feeling like you have to hide yourself from everyone else but at the same time feeling like offense is your only defense. 1:59 it’s string theory! Einstein created string theory originally on the basis of violin strings. All particles vibrating a part of a string. Since this is physics, string theory pertains to gravity. Some people call it quantum gravity, and is what we applied to understand black holes and open the idea of worm holes (Einstein Rosen bridge, like discussed in the first Thor). String theory requires that other dimensions exist and you have to travel through holes of time. So not only is joe traveling to a different dimension in a different “time”, since it’s originally based on violin strings I see this as both a music and a physics joke that flew over a lot of people’s heads.

Something I just noticed, the bike that almost hit Joe before he falls at 1:33 is a Vespa, a foreshadowing of their next film Luca!
(Is foreshadowing the right term? When Pixar put hints about the movie that's going to come next?? Well I hope I was clear enough).
Can I please ask you to do the movie Luca, please? I remember in videos like Megamind or Kubo that you like to point out wins and details about the eyes and this movie has plenty of those.

When I’m drawing, listening to music, or singing.
The singing is the one I wanna bring up. It’s happened way more than twice now, and here’s how it goes: I’m looking at a sheet of music for school, I’ve learned it pretty well, I start going off of memory, I get in my own head, keep singing, notice everyone staring, stop singing, and turn red as a tomato

I was able to realize on my own that finding a purpose isn't the point of life. Living is the point. Seeing this movie really solidified that for me and I'm so happy that other people who watch this will be able to learn the same lesson :)

It's been very difficult for everyone of course, but I felt like... my purpose was gone. Or at least stalled. And when I first watched this movie I sobbed at the end, because I finally felt like I was going to be ok. That it's fine if your "purpose" is just living life and enjoying the little things. So thank you for covering this movie. There's certainly a lot of good in it.

Idc if no one sees this but I need to let this out somewhere and where else but here, a place that that stays positive even if it’s negative.
This movie saved my life. When this movie came out i had a failed suicide attempt less than a month ago. My whole life I dreamed of becoming a professional hockey player but it didn’t work out. After I graduated high school I felt like I failed and my life would never amount to anything because I failed. I’m a perfectionist so since I had failed to reach the dream I had since I was 4 I felt like my life had essentially amounted to nothing.(I still feel this way today bc I haven’t been able to find a new passion.) but this movie made me realize that life is worth living no matter how I felt, happy or sad. Im going to stick it out for now. At least until I find 2 more passions. They say 3rd times the charm and if I mess up 3 times then I’ll give up but until then I’m gonna live life bc failure is a part of it. Maybe my new path will make me happier than what my main goal would’ve. I could’ve been like joe and would’ve realized that maybe my life’s dream wasn’t all it was made to seem. If my backup and my backup’s backup fails I can accept defeat but until then I’m gonna live life to the fullest and make as much memories as I can until I’m gone. Thank you Pixar for saving my life.

The thing I love about this movie as someone with Autism is how well they capture stimulus overload with 22 in NYC. They've NEVER been able to feel, or smell, and the You Seminar probably NEVER reached the peaks of the sights, and sounds of NYC. So naturally, 22 freaks out. I also love that Pizza, the thing Joe tried to eat in the You Seminar, is what breaks 22 out of that meltdown. Sometimes, it's the simple things that do that.
