Depends heavily on the game's netcode. In L4D2, over 40 ping starts to become noticeable. In BF4 Ping is almost irrelevant. In Tribes Ascend 20 and up is noticeable. In GunZ the Duel 1 ping is much better than 20.

This is a big problem in multiplayer fps games. In a 1v1 one player has a 3-5 second reaction time while another only has 1-2 second reaction time. I'd see someone and instantly die, in the killcam he saw me a good couple seconds before I saw him.

think of the 192 bit and 256 bit bus as highway lanes, the more lanes the more traffic u can accommodate in other words more data can be be moved per cycle, which also dictates how much vram u can use (2 gb or 3gb or 4, 6) a 192 bit bus gpu has usually 8 memory modules (250 mb each for a total of 2 gb) with each having a 32 bit bus interface, 32 x 8 = 192, high bus means more memory can be handled but there are exception like the 192 bit 3gb gtx 660s but im lazy cant bother to explain that or all of this might be wrong and im an idoit, if it is the latter feel free to laugh

Ping is more of a utility that (usually) uses the ICMP protocol to send small packages and waits for a response. Ping is NOT the latency itself, and it sounded like you were trying to put it that way. For e.g., Ping is commonly used just to test if a route exists between the sender and the receiver. I love your videos, but I didn't like this explanation, it was a little confusing and misleading IMHO.

FYI latency to a gaming server is also affected on how far away it is.
As in another country etc. Its less about the actual range, because electronic signals travels at the speed of light, but more about the amounts of hops the signal has to take between different ISP provider level "routers" (DSLAM etc) and the gaming server. The time the "router" takes to process the signal and send it to the next hop is actually what is the least time effective and ads to your latency rather than the physical range.
    For example.
I live in Norway. I have less hops to many East coast US servers, because of the trans Atlantic underwater line, than I have to some gaming servers in South of Europe.

Your ping can affect your bandwidth, as in TCP/IP the reception of a packet needs to be acknowledged or the sender will stop sending, or resend the unacknowledged packets. This depends on the Window Scaling setting of the TCP/IP connection, if I'm correct, but there is a maximum to that (of 1GB?), at which point your ping starts limiting your bandwidth.
This will not happen in most consumer setups, unless you have a really high ping, but can affect larger systems that push many GB/s.

Imagine a running race(the distance between your PC and the Server/PC/network device you want to connect to)... the time it takes you to finish it is your Ping.... say you can only run at a fixed speed(speed your request will travel across the copper/fibre to the server) so as a result you always get to the end of the race at the same time...Your internet connection would represent the amount of stuff you can carry while running. A stronger internet connection = more stuff carried... However you still run at the same speed during the race and so get to the end of the race at the same time(but with more stuff)... This is why the only way I know of to improve your Ping is a lot is to move physically closer to the server. This is a very simple example and there is a bunch of other crap affecting your Ping but this covers the basics and should help you understand better...

When is Jitter going to be talked about? I'm sure that's the consistency of ping, or standard deviation...but you say it? Also, any perspectives of mobile hard or solid state drives would be good. ALSO file compressions for video...?

I hope Techquickie is accepting requests for possible videos because I have one. I have been wondering for a while about the Blue, Green and Black WD hard drive types. I found some sites where they talk about them but not in-depth information. I would like to know more about those types of hard drives in more detail and if these classifications apply to other than WD made hard drives. And thank you in advance if you decide to make such a video.

If you are in a hurry there is a quick answer: Green are slow and quiet, primarily used for large chunks of data - music, movies, pictures. Blue are a lot faster, they are in the middle. Black have the best performance - used for programs, games and OS (if you don't want and SSD) but need more power and are noisiest. I have Blue and Black, not much of a difference to me personally.

So what actually determines ping value? Is it the isp? or physical distance between your device and the server? What is that ping number based upon?
    Thanks

You kind of made the explanation a lot more complex than it should have been. Ping is simply the time in milliseconds it takes for your internet connection to reach a server

Way back in the day when I played WoW on a dial-up connection it was playable for a long while. Until the first expansion when there was too much data trying to be sent. 200ms-300ms latency, but only connected at 26.4 Kb/s. Then I had gotten satellite internet and had a much larger amount of bandwidth connecting at 500+ Kb/s, but the game became barely playable because the signal had to travel to space and back first. Resulting in a 1200ms - 1500ms latency on a good day. Great for downloading large files and absolutely crap for a bunch of little files.

I was searching data centers for my console and found out the "ping time" next to data center, I watched this video and changed the data center to the one closet to were my console is located, and with the shortest ping time, now multiplayer has cut the lag in Half and everything runs much smother. If you have lag, check your ping!

So if we were to fall more toward the direction of video game streaming (ie Playstation Now), would that make online play near impossible to accomplish without lag since we would have to receive the game textures and maps AND the other players' location and bullet trajectory?

Great job on the video but make a video on how to reduce ping and make your internet service better. Maybe busy a myth about Ethernet vs wifi for ping.
