Match Game in the 1970s was the best. I was a teen and had the opportunity to go to Television City many times and watch the tapings. Most of the time the shows were taped on Saturday and Sunday. Gene would come to LA from his home on Cape Cod, tape five shows (six when Match Game PM was on the air) on Saturday and Sunday and then go back home. Fun times.

This interview is truly invaluable. I stumbled across it, and it was incredibly refreshing to watch. How do you express to someone you've never met how much joy they brought to your life, especially when I wasn't even around during the show's heyday as the top-rated network daytime program? Fifty years later, thanks to reruns, the talent and charisma of these personalities still resonate with audiences, particularly older ones.
Thank you, Gene, for being an icon of game show hosting. To Johnny Olson, the panelists, and the producers of Match Game '7x, your contributions have left an indelible mark, and you've secured your legacy through your involvement with this game show.
    Thanks for the memories!

Gene Rayburn, Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly, Betty White and Fannie Flagg were my favorites. Richard Dawson I could take or leave, I never was a fan of his (he just rubbed me the wrong way).
EDIT: And Nipsey Russell. How could I forget Nipsey Russell? I loved his poetry!
(just so you know, just because I don't mention certain panelists doesn't mean I don't like them, they just weren't my favorites)

Most of the episodes can be found on CZcams. I'm amazed by the video quality - color, resolution - that existed in the early-to-late '70s. It's like watching a time capsule and serves as a nostalgic recollection of the culture and personalities of that era. On many of the questions - when playing along with the celebrities and contestants - one needs to transform yourself into the historical context of that era. Most of the questions / matches are of course still relevant insofar as contemporary diction and vernacular.

Betty White was So sharp.. and so fast. No one delivered a line quite like Betty - a treasure! The chemistry between Brett and CNR - who was a genius in his own right.. was just the pinnacle of fun.. and a great way to escape for an afternoon. This show was what a game show should be!
