Charles Nelson Reilly appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson over 100 times and gave that show some of it's best interviews. He was hilariously witty.
Rodney was the best guest but CNR was up there
I read where CNR lived literally blocks from where the Tonight Show was staged, allowing him to be almost “on call” in case a scheduled guest had to bail.
And you are correct. He always delivered.
Capote??
My friend and I watched this together after getting the Best of Will Ferrell DVD from Blockbuster. (90s kid here.) After this, we described everything we loved as scrumtrilecent.
This comment is scrumtrilecent.
We only got video from Blockbuster until after 2001 since DVD was still relatively pricey.
This Best of Will Ferrell DVD was extremely popular in the early Zeroes
The enormous stack of cards is a perfect detail
Thank you James Lipton, and rest in peace. This is no doubt your greatest interview in Actors studio, a interview that shall be never forgotten, never supplanted, and most probably will stay as humanity's greatest achievement bar none. RIP.
I didn't even know he was sick
It wasn’t really James Lipton. It was Will Ferrell playing James Lipton.
@@jennymisteqq5399 the OP is being facetious.
Only one word could describe this sketch: Scrumtrulescent!
First and only Charles Nelson Reilly impression I've ever seen. Alec Baldwin nails it.
Cause no one really knows who he even is. Also the actor protesting this dude murdered some lady cold blood in front of his peers to witness.
@@hardtymz2517Liar.
Maybe the most underrated SNL skit ever? Baldwin KILLS it here. Will Ferrell is great as always.
Man... Baldwin allways play so well
Agreed...criminally underrated
@@bradleyjones650 Dare I say...scrumtrellescent?
@@TheWorldsGotTalent Spotted the Trump supporter
@@TheWorldsGotTalent this fuckin’ guy
RIP to both CNR and James Lipton
Lol I remember watching this episode as a kid and dying laughing at that word. All these years later, I still randomly say it and people are bewildered by what I mean. 🤣🤣🤣
SCRUMTRILECENT!
This is one of the funniest of comedy sketches in the history of TV...That he should celebrate Charles Nelson Riley, a regular on the 1970s game show circuit (particularly Hollywood Squares and Match Game, etc), is a SCREAM...
It's Reilly not Riley.
If it weren't for this sketch, I wouldn't know who Weird Al is singing about in "CNR"
yeah I don't think it as a very good crowd that night . I was laughing my ass off. maybe they didn't know much about Charles.
Probably my favorite SNL-Sketch (at least among the Top 5) - I can't believe it hasn't got more views!
Ferrell and Baldwin both kill it here.
Agreed. Should be in the tens of thousands of views. Of the many cringe-worthy sketches they come out with most weekends, this comftrably makes a top 50 of all time.
Baldwin is always cringe
@@dr.decker8185you are cringe, shut your piehole
@@dr.decker8185Ya just can't muster the ol compartmentalize thing, can ya.
@@waynej2608 what? Literally stfu
There are a lot of people who watch youtube clips of Reilly on Match Game and Carson and are frustrated because they cannot find one instance of Reilly twisting his glasses. In reality, he never did that. What he DID do to punctuate his one-liners was his trademark of readjusting his glasses.
The pile of paper 😫😂😂😂😂
25 seconds in and I'm already uncontrollably laughing!!!! It's 2022 and I'm watching vintage SNL sketches, trying to bring back simpler times.
Right there with ya lol 😊
Inside actors studio SNL with Toby maquire was the best one!
You have to be a fan of Inside Actors Studio to fully appreciate this.
Right. There would be absolutely no other way to understand it.
Absolutely!Will Ferrel is a chameleon
Hard to not be a fan of what both James Lilton and Inside Actors Studio, but yes, perhaps that is what Will's comedy and humor is based at.
No doubt and if you were, THIS was 😂😂😂😂
No you don’t, funny is funny
Ever since I saw this episode I catch myself randomly twisting my glasses like Charles. 🤣
😂😂😂
A Troll in Central Park definitely made me re-examined my life. It is a delight!
It is like staring into the eyes of God and having Him tell you, "You are my most wondrous creation."
Baldwin is truly a gifted Actor. He has excelled on stage on tv and in Film: he is the real thing! I feel very sorry for him about the accident! I am not sure he will ever recover from that.
Baldwin is unquestionably ‘“scrumtrelescent”
You feel "sorry" because he murdered someone and seriously wounded another person and walked off Scot free?? Seriously?
@@HolgerRuneFan Are you an actor? Yes or no? Are you a working member of SAG and AFTRA? Yes or no? Have you ever fired a weapon on a movie set? Yes or no? the best Inside the Actors Studio episode EVER hahahaha
I didn’t know who Charles Nelson Riley was, but Will Ferrell really killed it in this one,..! God, I used to sit for hours, show after show, listening to James Lipton’s interviews and his wonderful voice. Such gravitas and depth. I loved these shows.
I wasn’t aware of that Lipton had died, however. That is sad news. Rest in peace. Thank you for your amazing contribution here in life,.. 🙏
It helps to think of Nelson Reilly and Paul Lind as the fun gay uncles of kids growing up and watching sitcoms and game shows in the 70's. Obviously a little different but accepted.
He's a comedian from a game show in the 70s called
match game.
Lol the GIANT Stack of Cards
I've been thinking recently that Greg Proops is turning into a neo- Charles Nelson Reilly.
always loved the "Heidi Abromowitz" reference....as though a host would site being a guest on a documentary as part of acting career, LOL!
One of the skits that can make me laugh out loud. Fan of both The Actors Studio and Match Game, so it really resonated with me. They both killed it!😅
This may be the most UNDERRATED skit in SNL history.
Absolutely fantastically hysterical.
I am counting all the "this is underrated" comments I read. This is no. 4.
I remember I used to know this like the back of my hand! It never goes out of style!
LOL. My friend does a funny CNR impression and just told me about this skit. Baldwin nails it . Hilarious.
@@gardenlover9663 But don't try to count all the "underrated" comments on all of CZcams. The number is infinite.
unfunny
If you aren't familiar with Riley, or Lipton, this gem might go over your head. Couldn't stop laughing.
Inside the actor’s studio has long been a favourite of mine - but sadly I haven’t come across this brilliant, brilliant spoof of it until now. Baldwin is as brilliantly comic here as I’ve never seen him anywhere else. Equal to Cruise in Tropical Thunder.
One of my top 5 SNL skits, hands down 😂😂
Alec Baldwin won an Emmy for playing Donald Trump. I always thought his portrayal was okay, but this? Nailed it beyond belief!!
The only one to play Trump on snl ought to be Darryl Hammond, but yes Alec wins this one.
@@meaganohara7448 The new guy on there does a pretty good Trump impression.
@@meaganohara7448 Oh yeah, LMFAO, Darryl Hammond would nail that Trump impression!
Worth it for the lasting power of "scrumtralescent" alone!
Comedy brilliance! A genius performance from Farrell and especially Baldwin as C.N.R.
When someone asks me about SNL and what makes it funny, I send them this link.
"Well hello James Lipton! I'm King Lort! There's a troll in Central Park! I'm King Lort!"
"I adooorre your genius!" LOL 😆
It's spelled Llort (troll backwards).
I was laughing so hard!!! Too cute....
This is comedy Gold
These two are modern masters!
Wow a excellent impression of Charles Nelson Reilly. 💯💯💯❤️❤️❤️💯💯💯💯💯💯
This still makes me laugh 😅 this impression is spot-on!! The scarf!!And how about all those blue cards?!!
Damn I 💜❤️💜 this Charles Nelson Riley impression of Alec’s WAYYYYYY better than his Tony Bennett one 😆😆😆
Commenters don't get it because they don't know James Lipton. This is AMAZING if you're seen inside the actor's studio bc this is exactly how it runs -- Lipton takes an actor and builds them up as if they sit on a throne next to Jesus and Ghandi. It's an absurd show, and this is barely a parody.
*Gandhi.
I was picking that up, so Lipton would kiss ass for the whole show? Honestly I’m not even mad, there’s so much negativity in the world at least kissing ass is still kindness
I've seen enough of James' work to know he'd be tickled pink, if not purple by this parody.
@@Neyonius His comments about it are on CZcams.
@@HolgerRuneFan Were they negative? All I can find is 45 seconds of an interview where he says he was grateful.
scrumtrulescent

When SNL misses, it misses badly - viz, this mess.
@@BillViets It's fantastic
came here just to hear him say it. Best word EVER!!!!!!
the response to "when you arrive in heaven, what would you like to hear god say?" is sublime.
Hmmm
Alec Baldwin does great impressions.
HIs Tony Bennett is the greatest !
I still use that word. It says it all.
I still describe things as "scrumtrulescent" to this day. Classic sketch.
kinda eerie to think that they as in the real actors at the time of the air date didn’t know 911 was gonna happen in a few months. it’s like watching vids from before march 2020
I’m absolutely in stitches lollll
Simply outstanding
I was brought here as a fan of Charles Nelson Riley, you'd have to be to appreciate this.
If you haven’t seen A Troll n Central Park, you must.
Funniest SNL sketch I've seen. Not saying it's objectively the best, but, it's the best I've seen.
The response from Baldwin to the question at 6:13 is PRICELESS and may have been God's reaction when he arrived!!
Genial y espectacular
Charles Nelson Riley won the tour de France with two flat tires and a missing chain
Truly one of the most silly things I've ever seen Alec Baldwin do, and he was great! Pretty accurate too, from my memories of watching old game shows, even if I didn't understand half the jokes as a little kid 😉
Yeah there was a lot of sexual innuendo on those shows.
@@mizzury54Brett Sommers was one for those. Lol.
What a great skit 🤣🤣
Ironically, Charles was a noted acting teacher and director and actually won a Tony award.
The prosecutor, in the court case of the century: "Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, so help you God?"
Me, grabbing my glasses between my thumb and forefinger and pretending I am twisting them: "NNNGGGGH NNNGGGHH NNNNGGGHH!"
🤣🤣🤣🤣
So hilarious!
I hear a lot of people raving about his Trump impression, but this one is so much more impressive. Spot on.
I was a big fan of The Actors Studio and I find this beyond hilarious!!
"it is a DELIGHT" been saying it for 25 years, but forgot where i picked it up. crazy how pop culture sneaks into your own mannerism
The one thing that is just as funny as Charles Nelson Reilly is watching Alec Baldwin play Charles Nelson Reilly.
Baldwin owns it, start to finish.
Like a revolver to Will Ferrell face
5:47 what😆
In all seriousness: stop what youre doing right now and stream "Life of Reilly," which is Charles Nelson Reilly's autobiographical one-man stage show that he performed in 2004. It is absolutely, undeniably wonderful, perfectly written and delivered, fucking hilarious, and a devestating punch right to the gut of your humanity. I don't have enough words for how awesome and deeply moving it is. I had it on DVD, but last I checked you can stream it on Amazon Prime and CZcams. It's so, so, so, so good.
INSANE HAHAHAHAHAHA
Battle of the fake laughs, I love it
That ridiculous stack of cards is 😂
This is the funniest and I mean- I just can’t even handle myself
Charles Nelson Reilly did a one-man show called "Live of Reilly". It is on CZcams and it is amazing.
I didn't even recognize that as Baldwin until reading the comments here!
So great
Funny that they mentioned Match Game and now Alec Baldwin hosts that show.
He played Don Don Canneloni in Cannonball Run 2...That helped me on our trivia night once and I laughed so hard. My friends did not get it at all.
What an audacious idea for a sketch! 😂💀
For anyone who doesn't know Charles Nelson Reilly I suggest tracking down his autobiographical one-man show (and "Weird Al" Yankovic's tribute song "CNR")
King Llort...hey, wait a minute! Llort is troll backwards!!
Weird Al (when he was doing "CNR") said CNR was a little offended by this portrayal, but... it's spot on. The sketch isn't even about CNR. It's about how bombastic James Lipton was.
Such a good impression of mr. riley but IRL , nelson is a talented actor.
Lidsville and Match Game were the two greatest shows ever because of him.
This is the best thing ever. Will’s James Lipton is so brilliant.
"The great Bernard Pivot avec apostrophe Papillon de la cou te fleur de sheaux co tew slurp!"
Alec Baldwin Here sounds like Seth MacFarlane doing Peter from family Guy.
😂 the pile of cards
Reilly’s detractors might enjoy his straight performance in The X-Files episode “Jose Chung’s From Outer Space”
6:04
That’s the sound a care bear makes when someone says
I DONT CARE
If Mr. Show had Will Ferrell to do the impression then Mr. Show's parody would probably be a top 5 parody skit of all time.
I actually thought David Cross did a good job.
@@nicholasmoose6574 He did do a good job. Just not as good as Will Ferrell.
Baldwin killed it
The best one is with Norm McDonald as Clint Eastwood.
Awesome
CNR was flamboyant before the word was invented.
CNR was pretty awesome on his Johnny Carson visits
this is crazy nutz lol
Wish I knew who they were playing as, I feel like I would’ve laughed more
You most definitely would have laughed more. I cry every time I watch this because it’s so hilarious - but I also grew up in the 70’s.
Thank You JAMES LIPTON & CHARLES NELSON REILLY.......Nuff said 🙏 👏
This is bonafide Pee In Your Pants stuff...
Does anyone remember an SNL skit with Billy Bob Thornton where James Lipton interviews him and all he asks about is Armageddon? I saw this skit many years ago and have scoured the internet for it and have never found it. Sometimes I feel like I dreamt it but my sister also watched it with me 😅
Scrumtralacent, this sketch is Scrumtralacent
He’s so right about Troll in Central Park 😂
Did this guy really twist his glasses and laugh like that? It's hilarious.
