Throughout our history, we have been fortunate to have a talented female workforce here at Gibson. Most famously, the "Kalamazoo Gals" developed and built the coveted Banner J-45 in the 1940s, and since then, that workforce has continued to grow into a fleet of gifted luthiers working in our factories today. In this episode of The Process, get an up-close look at the precise and detail-oriented work that goes into binding scraping Gibson Acoustic guitars and see how we achieve that perfect patina on our acoustics with a behind-the-scenes look at the spraying process.
In this behind-the-scenes video filmed at the Gibson Acoustic factory in Bozeman, MT, we see how much care and attention goes into binding scraping on Gibson Acoustic guitars. Watch as the luthiers in the Gibson Acoustic craftory in Bozeman, Montana, show you step-by-step how they hand-scrape the binding, rosette, and headstock, and apply headstock decals by hand after the guitars have been sprayed. Learn how the finishing process differs for Gibson Acoustic banner-headstock guitars, and watch as we explain how your instrument is given a subtle patina to simulate the effect of age on the plastics and its nitrocellulose finish.

Gibson TV’s award-winning docuseries, “The Process,” is returning for a second season! This time, we’re taking you behind the scenes for an in-depth look at the physical process of making our acoustic guitars. “The Process” explores our newly expanded Gibson acoustic factory in Bozeman, MT, featuring interviews with the talented craftspeople who hand-make these beloved guitars and deep dives into the art of guitar making.

The book “Kalamazoo Gals” by John Thomas is an excellent book detailing all the women who made the Gibson Banner guitars during WWII. Highly recommended book.

Kalamazoo Gals is a wonderful book written by John Thomas who dug out the history of these ladies making guitars during the war despite a lot of resistance. But for his diligence this history would have been lost to the public.

Nice to see a token mention of the women Gibson leaned heavily on for its survival, but they were known as the Kalamazoo Gals, NOT the Gibson gals, and they're well-documented in John Thomas' book of the same name - fascinating read.
The fact is, there's a compelling case that Gibson tried to keep this quiet out of its typical brand image paranoia. At least it's finally starting to acknowledge their contribution - some of the best-sounding acoustics to ever come from Gibson.

"Gibson Gals" they were not called, no paraphrasing needed. Kalamazoo Gals is the title of the book that, not only documents that era but it is a good lesson in American history as well as tracing the origins of the great founder, Orville Gibson. What a great read and what a pity to not being mentioned rightfully and respectfully.

From what I understand the story of these women who made guitars during the second world war for Gibson was unearthed by John Thomas who wrote a book called Kalamazoo Gals. John put his heart and soul into this story, travelling to Michigan to meet two of the Kalamazoo Gals that were still alive at that time. I find it really unfortunate that Gibson chose to rename them Gibson Gals in this video with no reference to John or his work.

Now why on earth would you pull that out of your ass? ...and now as a result of your weird supppression and misrepresentation of one of your sources, your comment section is full of people properly crediting John Thomas and his book 'Kalamazoo Gals' while calling out your inexplicable distortion. Was this just a mistake, or are you embassassed by your heritage, or do you have something against Kalamazoo, or Mr. Thomas?
