Wow!!!! Just in time!!!!! I was about to start doing all of these techniques from 'Slow Russian', 'Fast Russian', 'TPRS' videos, etc. I love analyzing sentences. But, I was going to write/type it. I started by pausing video, writing sentences, play, pause, write, play, pause, write, etc. I never knew about that transcription option. Thank you so much for telling us about that. Some other uses I have already found. Viewers like double subs, but it's a lot of work for the youtubers. Well, I just watched a video with Russian subtiltles, and watched the 'English' transcriptions on the side. So, double subs are now possible also. It highlights the sentence being spoken, so you can pause it and study it while you're watching it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I now have double subs on everything I wished it was on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for pinning this. I should mention that the double subtitle technique is not possible when selected from a playlist. But when I searched for the same Orange County video on your channel, & selected it, I could see both the video & the transcriptions in both languages at the same time.

I have tried a lot of Russian teachers on CZcams. I just started watching your videos today. You are the only teacher that explained the hard and soft signs and hard and soft consonants so I could understand them. I think your learning method with videos is going to work. That was more or less the way I learned Swedish many years ago. I am excited to learn Russian, but I haven't made much progress. I'm hoping all this can change now.

You definitely can.
Russian is an objectively more advanced language that English. It's easier for a Russian to be completely fluent in English, than a non-Russian to be completely fluent in Russian. No matter how much you study it, how much you speak it, if you didn't grow up with it, you are bound to make grammatical mistakes here and there, it's unavoidable.

I'd want to suggest wikitionary as a dictionary, for it gives all the forms of a word, synonyms, colloquial phrases. Helps a lot!

I married a Russian woman in 2000 but this key you have given me where I see the transcript and hear the words together looks to be much more natural than what happens in a classroom. THX

(You don't even want to know how I was doing it before...very time consuming). I do the analyzing you mention and really dig into the sentence and how its structured. I'm glad i'm already doing what you said. When I learned english I first studied the grammar, then I started to read basic sentences in texts and then elaborate sentences. After I got advanced in reading and writing I started to watch movies, first with subtitles in my native language, then with subtitles in english and then without subtitles. With listening now mastered, I started to play multiplayer games in english speaking servers. I am now repeating the process with russian.

It's more helpful to download the track of 'slow russian' and listen to it everyday while you are reading the texts loudly at home and also listen to it everyday while you are driving to work/school. I suggest reading and listening to it for around 2 times in the evening and repeat it on the next morning. It may help to copy the text! Or write it in a tiny book as i do haha write the words you dont know under them. That's how i also learn to write in cyrillic^^

When did you actually begin to learn English and when did you move to America? Are you studying at uni? A big thank you too for your helpful videos, and your strong commitment to encourage all your students. I studied Russian to AS level at evening classes, but I've learnt so much from you. It's understandable as the course only lasted about two and a half hours per week. Spoken Russian iremains a barrier to me unlike German and Dutch. I'd love to get my hands on one of your T shirts in large which I'd gladly pay for. I would have signed up for your "Be Fluent" in Russian course but I'm going to be out of the country for a week or so in October. I'll seriously consider it on another occasion. I mean, for example, Japanese have a different alphabet and it is not easy, if you can solve the problem of the alphabet, then u can apply this method. I have been learning English for 4 months, I use many methods for improving my skills in English and saw which is useful or unuseful. I started to learn Russian 15 days ago. I started to read articles about language learning in Russian and I am learning 200-300 words per day. I am reading the article and translate it. I try to use words on my own. language. I used the same method to learn English but I couldn't remember it right. I was being intellectually curious. Nice video. At the beginning I didn't learn anything about grammar. Just the basics. Nice videos.
I may be late coming to this video Fedor, but I have to add that the very method you explain here is one that has worked well for me in the past. Of course when one gets to finer points of of accents and pronunciations, in the past I have used some techniques and repetition. I am having a hard time finding sites where native speakers would be willing to interact face to face with those wishing to improve. I have been disappointed by some sites that fools and children get on the sites to mock, cuss and are generally horrible...
That's interesting! This video reminds me a particular technique used by a famous Italian polyglot, Luca Lampariello. He defined this method as "double translation". So, he can understand how a sentence is built by native speakers.

Very good tip!!!! I`ll follow it. I`m brazilian and live in SPB and I`m learning russian thought english. I was a little bit lost because I could not find a way to follow. Most of courses in books are too heavy to learn as I`m already here and the need for comunication in for now.. On this method I think I can learn faster. Thank you very much for sharing this with us!

Hello. I'm Russian-speaking, and Russian is my first language. So, I can recommend you to communicate more and more with russians, even you feel troubles and clamping. I lived in SPb for four years. But I learn English and I had little practice with foreigners on English (with tourists more, that needed help to find the way). I think that alive communication is more effective. It's a right way to achieve C1 level in any language, I think. And there are a lot of people around you for communication. Ask if you have any questions. I'm a bit late to the party but thank you for this video. My native language is Polish so It's a bit easier for me to kinda understand Russian already without knowing anything. I would have loved to have joined your "Be Fluent" programme but I'll be out of the UK for a wek or so, so I'll seriously consider it for another time. I never knew about the transcription feature - however, I did open 2 windows of the same video, slowed them down and played them at the same time - one showing the English and the other the Russian
Omg I been writing down single words n English meanings and been flipping back and fourth but this is so much easier for whole sentences
I would still write down some words tho just to be sure incase you have a blank and need to refer to your notes.

Well you got it pretty much on the head. My native language is spanish I came to this country and along 2 friend I saw the difference in the english pronunciation. While me and a buddy would watch cartoon everything in english our other buddy would find better just to hang around and Spanish speakers, so till today he sounds like tony Montana and we got it faster because of that exercise. So yes I know first hand that works, thanks for reminding it I have been trying to learn some Русский with you for the past couple weeks and I gotta try this out.
Very cool way to learn. I started learning Russian last week, and I have been starting with a similar format. Now that I have a basic concept on the alphabet and can pronounce words (primitively) What I have been doing is taking a song for instance, with russian subtitles and using google translate (but with the microphone) and saying the word constantly until google translate can understand me, then documenting that word.. it's helping me say things out loud and also what other variations sound similar.. for instance.. I was trying to say "Я утопаю" .. and google kept saying "I'm stupid.." .. and I was like.. WHY!?.. then realized I forgot to say "oo" in the beginning. But now I know how to say I'm stupid.. so... there's that.
This is a proved method to learn languages and you're one of the few people who is talking about it. Congraluations! Maybe you would like to take a look to the Lucas Lampariello's work. He is a great polyglot.
My Russian professor in college recommends this method too. Отлично!
This method will immensely help you improving your vocabulary and learning common phrases in Russian. However, the biggest problem for Russian learners is speaking, not understanding. To overcome this, I hide the Russian column (I do what you do in excel) and try to say the English sentences in Russian. This really helps.
This is basically the approach used by Assimil for the last 50 years or so. Many accomplished polyglots use the Assimil materials to get started with new languages. What I would add is that once you deeply understand the text, you should memorise the interesting bits and learn to say them fluently. Then you begin to build up a quiver of authentic language you can use in real-time conversations.

Don't give up. I have the same problem. Bit by bit it will start to click. And don't be afraid to tell those you are are practicing with to slow the hell down so you can catch each word.

You're lucky to all be humans, and to be able to learn other languages, so to not do confusions
As for now, the "international" bridge language is English, but it can depend on different levels, like europe, where typically most of latin languages can understand each other, and germanic languages too.
In brief, its just a way of speaking that evolved around time, its the creation of a new language "species", that make humans so fascinating.

This seems like a tedious method, but it's honestly the best method. As a linguist, I've used VERY similar methods to dissect Spanish and English and French. People can tell when you take the time to learn and analyze, rather than just listen on a "surface level".
If you want a quick translator, use DeepL. Install the app on your laptop. Select the text you want to translate and press Ctrl-C twice. Super fast translation.

You can make ANY Russian video with subtitles into a Slow Russian video by turning down the speed of the video. Hit the "settings" button on the lower right corner of the video (looks like a gear), then click "Plackback Speed". Start with .75 and see if that's slow enough (slowed down by 25%) and then go slower if needed. Adjusting playback speed was a game changer on CZcams, especially for educational videos.

I was doing this until i read that i "should" read one of those 500 pages books of grammar... but now i realize that i learnt a lot this way so i continued doing it.
i can read and speak it enough for a russian to know what im saying. but i dont know what im saying so i cant wait to expand my vocabulary with this

For all you guys that can't turn on the Russian transcript there is a way. Go to the three dots and then add translation change the subtitles from English to Russian the only problem I find is that you can only copy one line at a time
I put Russian song lyrics into Yandex translate on my computer and it does this process really nicely side by side :)
Something really important I feel you didn't mention in the video is that this single technique can be used to learn an entire language, literally. If a person doesn't know what else to do, they can just keep listening to sentences and understanding them and listening to more on and on until they literally understand almost all that they hear. No need for the horrors of memorizing vocabulary or any other annoyances or distractions. Example: you could do like 900 hours of study with just this one method and at that point you'll realize you are so advanced that with just 100 hours trying to talk with a teacher, browsing some grammar books, and fixing up some small bits of confusion you'll be a SOLID high intermediate with a massive passive vocabulary (the teacher will constantly compliment it).
Contrary to what you do though, I think the technique is actually better done with the use of technology though, so for several languages that I have used this VERY VERY EXTENSIVELY I have leveraged Workaudiobook, Nova Text Aligner (poor losers can skip it, not free), and instead of using the nearly useless 10 years obsolete Google Translate of course I use Deepl. With Deepl you don't have to waste all the time copy & pasting, you can hit CTRL C C and it will pop-up immediately.
I've found it invaluable to jump right into the translation of an adult or teen book I already know in English as an ABSOLUTE BEGINNER ON DAY 1 as long as you can find the translation AND audiobook for the whole thing in Russian or your target language. I'm experimenting back-and-forth with using super hard materials vs simple stories for beginners. Both have their pluses and minuses, will take me several more years and languages to reach a conclusion on what is truly best I expect.
Use yandex instead. It’s a translator specifically for Russian and English so it’ll be much more accurate. Also “(poor losers can skip it, not free)”, you’re a pretty cool dude
