Shyness issues or stage fright. She completely killed it but being shy or nervous can cause that kind of response to your own art after its over. I suffer from the same thing, I've almost unintentionally apologized after my own songs on stage, its a bad habit if you're a shy and introverted performer. But its better to say something rather than nothing to kill that silence in between songs.

This performance is one of the most intensely emotional ever. The skill needed to be that raw but still sing is tremendous. Those *cries*. Yebba has said she won't ever record the song because this is the definitive performance of it, and she wants to honor what happened in that room.
And that protective thing--I've seen so many reactors say things like, "Tell me who hurt her, I'mma come for them". It really does bring out that feeling.

YEBBA performing "My Mind" at Sofar NYC on September 30th, 2016.
The first time I heard this song, I thought it was about the overwhelming anguish felt when one is confronted by irrefutable evidence of their lover’s infidelity.
But then, I read that Yebba’s mother committed suicide about a week after she sang her first original song; causing "My Mind" to take on new meaning representing mental health.
As if the mental illness was taking her mother away 🥺.
She says her artist name was chosen to honor her mother, who she said "always called her by the nickname" (her name Abbey written backwards) as a child.
In memory of her mother, Yebba twitted in Sep 26, 2020 "This the last time ima respond about “My Mind”. Most of you read as “wow love the way she portrays pain in her voice”... that’s not what it was. It was worship, freedom, Hope really. And I never re-recorded it because I respect the Presence in that room. Let’s move on together."
and then "Later that year, my mom committed suicide. I went back and dedicated the performance to her as it was my last before she passed. So that’s where it will always stay. Don’t ask me to recreate it no mo. You ain’t gotta have respect but pls, have some soul. Let’s move on together."
Well, she is literally crying without shedding a tear!
    So strong. So powerful.

What makes an artist great, I think, is their ability to connect emotionally with their audience more than their specific technique, or perhaps their ability to apply technique for that greater purpose. That is why I hate to hear that a singer has done something "wrong" technically, and what I love about your critques. Your own openness to emotion, your own vulnerability, allows you to see the performance beyond the technique. You have an incredible technical understanding and such a clear way of explaining it, but it is your character that allows you share the art of the performance. I'm so glad the internet broke the hold of record company filtering and dismissal of so many great voices. I found some really amazing ones on Twitch. If it weren't for your Twitch I never would have known better. Thanks for you.
Yebba was crushing, so good. Great reaction. Same here😭

I absolutely loved your reaction to this - I usually try and avoid vocal coaches reaction to this song, because I feel like majority try and critique the song in a technical term and suggest what they would do differently from a professional point of view to make the song “perfect.” As a consumer, you know what I would change about this performance? Nothing. Not a damn thing. You could hear her heartache and vulnerability, and that sets her aside from so many of the polished artists you hear these days on the radio. The lyrics were so relatable, and Yebba sang that for all the women (and men) who have found themselves in the exact same situation once before. My tears flow every time I hear this song.

  • @El_Ezra_Meitar5
    @El_Ezra_Meitar5 Před 2 lety +3

Your sobbing through half of the performance? A mirror image of me, for sure, every single time I watch it 😂
Also, your analysis is beautiful and gave words to the feeling I experienced while listening to her.
Also, your voice and technical breaking down of the abilities of Yebba were both, as equally gorgeous. :)
Bless you fairy voice mother 😂
Loved the curses at the end, especially. Very fairy like 😂

She’s a magical voice witch! Lol In all seriousness, it’s really a gifting to be able to make people feel that emotionally connected to a performance. Few performers are able to bring their audiences along for the ride.
    She did it masterfully!

There are a dozen things that set you apart from other voice reacts, but the most striking and (IMO) most important is that your reactions feel genuine- so genuine, so raw. I love your videos so so much. You’ve introduced me to so many wonderful talents in such a short time and that’s so valuable to me.

I've had so many favorite songs over the years but this one will always have a close place to my heart and I've probably listened to it a million times. She put her EVERYTHING in this.
I've seen in comments that this was right after her mom passed, and she was hesitant to ever perform this again. It made the passion/pain very clear in that moment.
So glad you chose to review it! I hope you're feeling better!
