    I want to bring up the whole "cover-based shooter" aspect, because they do a pretty wacky thing later on in the game (I don't know how far he actually got, but here it goes). Later on, when you get to the forest level, they actually start to push you away from taking cover and instead do things a little more like Painkiller where you're constantly running around, blasting things to bits with your weapons and abilities. I actually really liked that shift because they actively encourage you to keep moving rather than sit behind a wall or a block. At some point, I stopped bothering to take cover, even when there were boatloads of chest-high blocks of wood or concrete, as I needed to dish out more damage with my abilities rather than plinking away at them from behind cover, a la Gears or Division.
    You quickly realize that you want to be moving as much as possible and be as close as possible to the enemy so that your abilities can heal you up and kill them quicker. Hell, there are entire levels where you're up against other human enemies and there is virtually no cover to be had, and the run-and-gun gameplay actually benefits the game a lot more, as it makes engagements more nail-biting and tense rather than feeling mundane and routine if it were strictly a cover-based shooter.

    • @Hillthugsta
      @Hillthugsta Před 3 lety

      The cover is for your enemies. Not for you. With that said. The sheer durability and sheer number of most of the enemies does not make run and gun a viable stratagem in a lot of cases. Also cool downs on powers take way too long.

    • @WhiplashSL
      @WhiplashSL Před 3 lety +1

      @@Hillthugsta You clearly haven't touched Expeditions at all. Run-and-gun is _the_ strat for getting the best gear, since you're timed and need to complete them as fast as possible. Taking cover and slowing down is the last thing you can do, since you slow yourself down and aren't doing anything.
      Also, cooldowns take too long? I've seen cooldowns below 10 seconds. Hell, I've seen them go as low as 6 seconds. How exactly are those long?

    4:25 This was quite an interesting take from old Yahtzee here. My first reaction to this was Portal 2, but it had separate single player and co-op stories both optimised for their respective number of players. My next thought was the old Lego Star Wars games. Drop-in, drop-out co-op means the gameplay is completely accessible for one player or two. Maybe there’s a different rule for couch co-op games perhaps?

    • @comiccinema8177
      @comiccinema8177 Před 2 lety

      Well the thing about Lego games is that they’re puzzle games more than action games. Because of this, you don’t necessarily need to rely on a partner and just keep switching to whoever you need to complete the puzzle at the time. But big action games (this also applies to Portal) need to separate their single and multiplayer into different modes, with entirely different design philosophies. It’s when you try and make it all one mode where you can play through a map with just one player or multiple players that the problems ensue, since in games like Outriders the levels are always designed with the philosophy that you may or may not have help, meaning it has to be feasibly playable either or, creating an experience with no real focus or specialization on specific mechanics or even enemy types that you learn to counter with your special abilities. Because every special ability needs to do more or less the same job of killing enemies. Because what if it’s just you? A healing ability you can do only to allies becomes practically worthless. So every level is built on the idea that anyone can accomplish any job and thus creating a bland middle ground that doesn’t really please anyone outside of those with the lowest possible standards.

So if you want to make a fun game, make it for singleplayer, then just shoehorn in that second player without a second thought. It might completely break the game, but trust me, it will be fun.
    Of course this means that any multiplayer game that's played in singleplayer, will be less fun. And since games are usually made to just barely be fun, that means multiplayer games when played in singeplayer, aren't fun at all.

    Whats funny is that Yaztee's complain about multiplayer is how mario lart was originally designed!
    They first tested the maps in multiplayer to make sure it was fun with friends THEN tested the single player mode to give solo sully something to do beyond balancing eggs near faulty wirings

    I wonder how he'll review the multiplayer component in Arkane's upcoming Deathloop. It's trying to bridge that gap with multi- and single player, albeit not through co-op.

    Worth noting that People Can Fly is no longer People Can Fly, it is a brand new indie studio wearing PCF's mask. Safe to consider The Astronauts as PCF under a new name.

    When Yahtzee went off on how the dudes on the chest high walls all look the same but do different things, I said to myself "how is this still a problem in shooters? Valve solved this shit in 2007!"
    This is why I rarely get anything out of Shooters, since at a distance and/or a glance, you can't really tell very well what you're looking at and then I'm dead.

    Says a lot about how good TF2's core design is when even Yahtzee holds it in high view.

    I had server issues for the first 24 hours after launch. It's been stable since. I played non-stop the last few days and the only problem I had was a hard crash when I tried to open a reward in the middle of a fight. I'm also playing it single player, and while it's clear it's optimized for multiple players, I've only had to abandon 1 sidequest so far, and that's right after hitting world level 9 against a boss. I came back to once my equipment scaled up properly and was able to take him out on the first try.

    Dunno if I can agree with the whole "impossible to make a game equally fun for single and multiplayer" statement. It seems very easy to make both no fun for anyone after all.

    Apparently all the low walls are meant to be cover for the enemies, not the players, & it's the enemies that are playing the cover shooter as you run about massacring them. In practice, it's still a cover shooter but every so often you get to kill 1-3 enemies at once despite the cover element.. If it doesn't crash or disconnect or glitch out.

    I was surprised to see this game get a fair amount of coverage on gaming websites. Given the cover I didn't think it was anything even remotely notable. But hearing it's a looter shooter, it all makes sense now.
