    Jaguar's XE is much improved. We put the volume D180 diesel version to the test.
    Ten Second Review
    The Jaguar XE continues to deliver a slickly executed take on the mid-sized executive genre, offering something different to the usual German suspects in the BMW 3 Series / Audi A4-segment. On paper at least, this revised version seems to have the design, technology and ambition necessary to succeed in this segment, with the dynamics of a BMW and the luxury of a Mercedes, plus all the efficiency and connectivity modern business buyers now expect. It's a strong contender.
    Background
    Think Jaguar and you probably think of unashamedly high-end cars, raffish, elegant and rapid. It's not a company that's given to lowering the bar and chasing volumes. It tried that in 2001 with the dismal X-TYPE, a rebodied Ford Mondeo that languished in the range for eight years, the public never really enamoured by a Ford wearing a pastiche of Jaguar styling. In its best-selling year, it sold half of Jaguar's initial 100,000 per year estimate, the Brits grumbling that here was a car they never wanted, hastily foisted on them by Ford's top brass in Detroit.
    It's took Browns Lane until 2014 to come back with a second stab at the mid-sized 3 Series / Audi A4-dominated executive saloon sector, but the XE showed that the brand had learned from the X-TYPE and done things rather differently. It was - and still is in this improved form - a serious contender to the likes of the BMW 3 Series, the Audi A4 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
    Driving Experience
    When you compete in the same class as the BMW 3 Series, it's a measure of real confidence to bill your contender as "the driver's car in the global mid-size saloon segment". Yet that's exactly what Jaguar has done and a closer look at the XE reveals the reasons behind their bullishness. The chassis is a 75 per cent aluminium monocoque, light but immensely strong. The design utilises a classically correct longitudinal engine and rear-wheel drive architecture. Jaguar reckons that this XE has the best electric power steering in class and there are plenty of chassis goodies like torque vectoring by braking.
    Automatic transmission is now non-negotiable and the car continues to be available in rear and all-wheel-drive variants. Jaguar's advanced torque on-demand all-wheel drive (AWD) system and Intelligent Driveline Dynamics technology maintain the XE's rear-wheel drive handling feel and agility while improving performance, traction and driver confidence. This revised XE, as ever, is available with a choice of Ingenium petrol and diesel engines. The 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol is available with 250PS and 300PS outputs, badged P250 and P300 respectively. The 300 PS petrol engine, equipped with all-wheel drive, accelerates from 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds (0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds). While the efficient 180PS Ingenium diesel, badged D180, delivers 430Nm of torque and decent

    The Jaguar XE is a fantastic car to drive, it always was. It had issues which have been solved, some of them were silly things that if Jag hadn't tried to rush it out the door could have been done. A 2016 executive car with no Apple Carplay when things like a Vauxhall Corsa had it is crazy! The other issue which was one of the few reasons I didn't buy one at the time was a pushy sale team, I spent over 3 hours in the dealership and saw many people walk out for the same reason I did. I went elsewhere and bought a car with everything I wanted for a better price and much nicer sales team. It was such a shame as the Jag XE is a dream car of mine.

    I have the 2017 XE 2.0 Diesel. It is an excellent car with great fuel efficiency. I disagree on the interior part, I think it is quite comparable and probably better put together than an A4 of the same year. The main reason this model didn't sell was the arrogant JRL dealers. They never make you feel welcome, don't follow up and won't budge on price. You cannot do that when you are fighting established rivals. Something has to give.

BMW interior (literally) melts away after 5 years and half the electronics pack up. Also, I checked out my colleague's Z Series when she bought it brand-new. Few months later, console broke and the leather started wearing out. 60,000kms later, the British leather in my XE and no signs of wear on the plastics either. So, I am happy to argue this any day.

    Nah mate you need to do your research. The X Type was actually a very competent car, the press at the time even put it close to being a 3 series beater. Even Clarkson liked it. What went wrong was:
    1. Styling didn't appeal to younger customers that bought compact executives.
    2. Press made a massive deal about the 10% of parts it shared with Mondeo.
    3. Range was launched with only 2.5 and 3.0 V6 Petrol. It should have launched with a diesel range and smaller petrols to compete in the volume part of this market. They fixed this far too late.
    The actual car itself was solid and performed well, what ruined it was Ford being totally clueless about the type of customer buying compact executives.

      @@OsvUkVehicleSupply I actually found the review slightly confusing, as I watched the 2016 review recently by your channel and at that time it was very well received. Now you seem to be slating it, at least at the beginning. I've never heard anybody complain about the cabin noise, and overall you seem to be making the same noises as you did back in 2016.
      My opinion, and it is only that, is that Jaguar were harmed by their perceived mistake that was the X-Series. I say "perceived" because it was actually Ford's mistake, anybody who understood the class would have known that just putting a new skin on the Mondeo would never work, but everyone who reviews the XE keeps on harking back to that, and it's surely not helpful. For me, all things considered, it's been best in class from day one.

    It's like the first XF - the 2011 refresh is how the car should have been from launch, and the current XF should now be a step on again. The XE was always competing against established rivals while being slightly inferior in almost every respect. The XJ was lovely in 2010 although now is laughably outdated compared with, say, an S-Class. Even the E-Pace and F-Pace are merely 'pretty good' in a marketplace crowded with excellent rivals. The F-Type has just been restyled when, by my count, it's coming up on seven years old now, and running on a platform that was designed on a shoestring in 2004. The 911 meanwhile... And the i-Pace? I'm still not sure what it is or how it acts as a halo for the rest of Jag's range. Here's a tip Jag, if your infotainment is known for being laggy, don't launch your new all-singing all-dancing rolling tech demo without fixing it first!

    The original XE was a beautiful car with a bland interior and rubbish electronics. The facelift is a vast improvement. Sadly they have the same issue with the XF. I have a 2012 XF that I've had for 6 years now, after over 20 years running Mercedes E Classes. The driving dynamics are vastly better, even than the current E Class, and the looks 10x better, but the interior, ergonomics and electronics are way behind the Germans. I forgive it every time I get on a twisty road or just look at it, but wish I didn't need to.
    The problems Jag has are easily resolved. Just get a focus group of ex German car owners. Simple ergonomic changes and a few small materials adjustments and they'd have world beaters. Still, everyone buys SUVs these days I guess - and at least JLR have the best products in that segment.

    The lack of HP is was killed off the Jaguar market. The big V8's that came with the early version of the XF & XJ series was a major selling point, once Jaguar went to the 3.0L and now the 4 cylinder even with a turbo doesn't make up for the feel of the power across the power band with the 5.0L models. I had an loner XE while getting service on my wife XF and it was night and day feel. I recently purchased a XJL and purposely went for an older model with the V8 supercharge engine.

    I couldn’t believe it when back in the early 2010’s I heard Jaguar were developing 1) A car to take on the 3 series and 2) Building a new factory near Wolverhampton to build ICE's to power it. It was obvious even then that the industry was going electric and Tesla have proved that to challenge the ‘German Establishment’ you have to think different. The Model 3 is outselling all the German equivalents in the USA and this year is setting about Europe with a car that outperforms the XE and all the German offerings. It doesn’t matter how fancy your petrol or diesel (yuk) burning efforts are, the electric motor is simply a superior device and that factory in Wolverhampton will have to switch to making electric drivetrains. Until Jaguar can think radically about how to take on the German’s the XE and their other models will be sales pups. The only car Jaguar sells all it can make is the iPace.

    • @miyahtallulah
      @miyahtallulah Před 4 lety

      Hardly. JLR's range is world class. The Germans haven't exactly set the world on fire EV or SUV wise. JLR have made huge leaps. Soon, they will compete better on the boring stuff.

      @kiae-nirodiaries1279 Před 4 lety +1

      @@miyahtallulah Let’s hope so. They are losing money and don’t have the scale of Mercedes/BMW/Audi. The ICE engine plant near Wolverhampton was a massive investment which will be difficult to recover but it makes sense to turn the Ingenium engine to the job of a 3 cylinder 1.5l generator for PHEVs to help the inevitable transition to BEV. Fact is that Jaguar is a small company, only propped up by the Land Rover arm which has much bigger sales. There is just no point in trying to ‘out-engineer’ the Germans, the electric motor makes all that clever engineering irrelevant..they need to focus on design with a clean sheet approach as they did with the iPace.

    "Awful, old circular transmission selector"...first of all, I don't really think it was selecting transmissions (if I'm not mistaken, there's only one transmission), but, rather, gears. More important, there's nothing "awful" about a control that allows your hand to rest in a natural position while ELECTRICALLY selecting a gear. Why do we need a big stick to operate electrical switches? That "old" knob that elegantly and silently rose up to meet your palm upon start-up and just as elegantly and silently rotated to Park and then descended into the console at shut-down was a very luxurious touch. Jaguar has taken a giant step backwards by returning to the same ugly, pointless stick that every other carmaker uses, and sticks out like the sore thumb that it is. Totally pointless design for an electrical control, and a terrible and totally pointless design regression.
