Thunder and live 4 love, personal favorite tracks for me.
Ps. I met my wife at Madison Square garden , Love Sexy concert tour 1988 , both of us are diehards.
I'm excited about this release but slightly annoyed about the missing track "Clockin The Jizz"... Perhaps Estate can release a naughty collection with Lust You Always, Xtralovable original etc...
Agreed. Not sure why the whole Gett Off Maxi single tracks (flutestrumental, etc)
Man aside from just a quality podcast you are one of my favorite Prince appreciators who actually knows WTH he’s talking about! I’m from St Paul, was front & center during Prince’s heyday, never missed a “secret” Paisley gig after partying at Glam Slam back in the 90’s, etc… I’m THAT dude! Also a musician myself. We need to talk man! Keep doing what you’re doing! Continued blessings my guy.
Thank you sir, appreciate you.
In December 1991, Steve Fargnoli, Prince’s former manager, sued Prince, stating that the spoken word message about managers included at the end of Jughead was about him, and broke their non-disclosure agreement. The defamation and breach-of-contract suit demanded $5 million in damages.
I remember that lawsuit.
Wasn’t that claim unsubstantiated?
I Remember That Time Period As Well,Prince Felt He Was Being Used.
Excellent long forgotten factoid! I think you just showed everyone that there are MORE Archivist and Senior Researchers out amongst the Prince fan-fam-superfan community!
Prince was angry still over what Farg's did to Prince with 'Nothing Compares 2 U'.
I actually never knew about this
Wow, so Steve has a real good reason to hate that song. 😂
I’m late to the party but I’m very very glad that the Estate is leaving the 80’s for a moment and focusing on the 90’s & the NPG. The NPG was a major part of Prince’s musical world and I’m so glad they’re getting focus & love like they should. Diamonds & Pearls is one of Prince’s best albums and it deserves all the love that it’s getting and about to get. The last part of 2023 is about to be fun and I’m here for it all! Bring it on!!!
Dangerous and Diamonds and Pearls both came out in the fall of 1991.. I think Get Off song single and video actually came out in the summer of 1991..
"Let it be a metaphor, Lord" 😅... &"We're not all lawyers" 😂
THE WILLING AND ABLE VIDEO PREMIERED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE SUPER BOWL THAT YEAR. ALSO, THEY R MISSING "CLOCKIN' THE JIZZ"Z1 A FAVORITE INSTRUMENTAL OF "GETT OFF" ON THE MAXI SINGLE.
Yes, Michael, Chuck D!! Chuck D from that time, from back in da day! It is phenomenal and outstanding he is part of Prince's history and his contribution. I'm blown away that he was part of this year's celebration. Of all the celebrations I would've done it this year. As a New Yorker, that's my connection & home.💜🤎🖤🔥💕
The new cover, although a beautiful cover, eliminates, obscures, the O+>. And is there going to be a hologram? Remember the promo larger hologram on the D&P record store promo displays?
I don't understand the introduction by Chuck D. or others that weren't part of that era.
I would have rather essays from people, whether musicians, staff, record execs, management, label heads, fashion designers, graphic designers, art directors, hairstylists! Randee! FROM THAT time. Including the lady that worked on the hologram and how all that transpired.
That way it's more immersive into that era. You know who should have written the introduction... ARSENIO HALL. Yes that's right!! Or Randee St. Nicholas.
Song list... Work that Fat made it in! PAIN is incredible, I LOVE that song.
Song 11 'Skip To My You My Darling', its 'My Lou', not 'My You' and is most likely a cover of Finis Henderson's 1983 'Skip To My Lou', love that song also, if you haven't heard it, you'll understand why Prince may have covered it!
I feel some more are missing, like 'My Tree' from the Larabee sessions, should have been in here, because Prince had also recorded Insatiable during those sessions.
And, I'd thrown in practically ALL the songs on 'The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale'. Well, maybe not all the songs, but most are from part of the D&P era.
But alas, I'm no “Archivist and Senior Researcher” so what do I know😐.
Prince and Chuck D worked together first in the 90’s and I think D&P was Prince’s full on embrace of hip hop on an album. Just my thoughts as to why Chuck was included. There’s an article where Chuck D talks about their work together. 💜
@@kdiva2780 I have no problem with Chuck D, but it's not like D&P was on the same rap level as Fear of a Black Planet. Prince started embracing, or trending towards rap around 1990.
I can see the connection of what you mentioned though, yes, an album where Prince really brought in rap elements and a 'hard rapper' into the mix so to speak, so perhaps Chuck can comment on that, but it's still not entirely there. If CHuck were to comment on his work with Prince in around the year 1999, 2000, then I can say oh okay.
Also, Prince collaborated a bit with Ice Cube in the mid 90s, but it was to steer youth away from street gang culture, from the negative aspects of gang gun violence. 'Lovesign' was a result of that. Prince was actually very critical still of rap, particularly the emerging 'gangstarap'. By not giving The Gold Experience an SDE that's a lost message. Strange but... true.
@@HaroldGeorge-pe8gz I did not know that, the sampling of LGC, thank you for that purple factoid! I agree, there's something harder, tidal wave like, more realistic, really gut belief rebellion about PE. It is Rock n Roll. To go against the grain and challenge the status quo, etc. etc.
Prince in his own special way, unique approach, also did the same. I can see where the opposite attracts factor came in between PE and Prince.
Thanks again for the reply!
@@HaroldGeorge-pe8gz is interesting yeah they Public Enemy we’re masters of creating a wall like like a tidal wave of sonic power. They knew how to use or create music that was extremely powerful. But it’s interesting you bring up MC Hammer there’s a story about prince trying to buy soft and wet from Christopher moon around 1989 for $200,000. Christopher moon resisted the offer. Apparently it appears a Prince was shipped to the music industry‘s full on direction in support of and developing rap and hip-hop further. Almost completely replace actual musicians. Anyways, the point is that well I don’t know what the plan is but I’m just sharing his factoid!
Great Job as always all. Been rockin with you for about a decade now Michael Dean and Marc Wiggins. Everything you all do is very appreciated.
Hey Nick! Appreciate you!
I think everyone wants to see a deluxe version of parade. In addition to that though, Up Next for me would be another volume of originals, especially the joint he did that Howard Hewitt released and his take on the G spot
More than a few tunes I would hope to be on an Originals 2 are in the vault inclusions of the D&P SDE
Yes, Fascinating is a good word describing prince. The "Instabte " is one of his best videos. I love it when prince gets on the ground. I think that song is about diamond/Lori, which he was seeing in 91-92, maybe even longer since they met in 89'. You can see how she looks at him in the video, when he was "on top " of her. She is the one in his dressing room, when he raps, during Tony M. song. And she got a lot of screen time during filming the concerts. Prince was very clever to of only have 12 years of school. He took lovers on all his tours, to wind down. No time to be out looking for love while traveling. Plus they were safe sex, no vd's. 90-96 is my favorite years of prince. He was turned up.
Diamonds and Pearls, the album that started it all for me.
@@HaroldGeorge-pe8gz I completely understand you. The 90s are very special to be because I love that NPG band, and the horns, etc. But he wasnt the innovator, trend setter he was in the 80s. And I am not a big fan of his use of rap
@@HaroldGeorge-pe8gz you are right, but let´s not forget that he released Batman and Graffiti Bridge after SOTT and Lovesexy. Batman is probably his official album that I like least (that ultra dry producrion is probably the reason), and Graffiti Brigde, despite having some great songs like Question of U, wasn´t Prince at his creative peak.
One of my biggest frustrations as a Prince fan is that I would love to see him diving deeper into jazz. Yes, he had some great jazzy moments, like ´She Spoke 2 me´, but he focused more on his R&B side and released dozens of songs like ´Incense and candles´ until the end. Having said that, I still think he did some great things in the 90s that showed that he may not have been the innovator he was before, but still very musical and creative.
I preordered the CD version of the SDE. I want the vinyl set but it's out of my price range for now. I hope to pick one up down the road, like I did SOTT SDE.
Great job on this. Enjoyed the convo. It was Willing & Able and Strollin’ that were showcased during the Super Bowl broadcast in 1992 which was played at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. They gave the hometown hero some shine during the pre-game!!
What SDE should they do next? I’d take a mash up of ATWIAD and Parade. Prolific live performances during that time.
Great discussion and panel. Can't wait to see that Glam Slam show!
I remember when I bought the Diamonds and Pearls album on cassette in 1991. I was blown away . This was a "Different " Prince. Str8 Dope !!!
Hello! This may have already been answered or found out. But Prince did the Horny Pony dance during the Rock In Rio from 1991. Also 'My Tender Heart' was performed by Rosie Gaines on the ABC 'Ryde Dyvine' concert and on her Closer Than Close solo release.
I saw him in concert for the first time during the tour for this album, at Paris Bercy. A spaceship in the shape of the symbol landed on the stage at the start of the show. Unforgettable. (George must have smiled seeing this at the time too)
The Diamonds & Pearls tour (1992) was the first time Prince toured Australia. Holy shit. I've never seen a crowd react like that at any concert I've ever been to. Prince rose from beneath the stage in a Perspex tube in silhouette & proclaimed: "Hello Sydney, My name is Prince and I have come 2 play with U" Needless to say the crowd went nuts.
Yes. Gett Off originally didn't have the clangy snare or the En Vogue sample. Those were added by Ricky Peterson iirc. I only heard it back then because my cousin who worked at Rolling Stone at the time received a press copy of the album and on it was the original Gett Off
Rahsaan and Martika go way back to an early 80's show called Kids incorporated. it was sort of a musical skit comedy show for kids. It seems they remained friends over the years and he ended up blessing her project
6:18 "Have Grace for me! Have Grace!"
"Hurry up, Grace, the song's almost over." "My name's not Grace." "I know that, but hurry up... Grace."
I see you!🫡😂
I have 2 listen 2 "Diamonds & Pears" again. I didn't appreciate that album much when it came out. But I love "Money Don't Matter 2 Night". If I was 2 make a playlist of Yacht Rock songs from 1978-1981, that song would fit right in the list without being out of place. I look 4ward 2 listening 2 the deluxe package when it comes out next month.
Willing & Able “live” performance was from the Super Bowl (Buff v Wash)
"Hold Me" is the song he gave to Jevettta Steele.
Also, how you gonna do a Diamonds & Pearls SDE and *NOT* include the video for "Violet the Organ Grinder"????
INCONCEIVABLE. 🤦♂
What? I haven't checked this out properly yet but I assumed all the Gett Off remix videos would be there.... Grrr... No Clockin the Jizz either I guess? Ah well I'll enjoy what's there for sure
'Hold Me' would be better on another Originals release ..
WHAT?! WHY?!? Is there a political reason as to why? That is censorship. Censoring of an artist’s right free expression. Tampering with Prince’s art and legacy. Outrageous if not flat out disgusting. Apparently we have forgotten that at that time around that. It was a lot of talk about censorship. It was a very hot topic then.
@@jan-willembavinck3650same with Get Blue & My Tender Heart
Amazon has album players. I love vinyl
Will buy but D&P wasn’t my favourite Prince style, never felt the rapping from Tony M
I agree maybe I'll change o nce this comes out.1st Prince album to me that didn't have a strong opener and closer. But, I know the vault tracks will make up for it.💜💜
For me, I was a hip hop fan and a Prince fan since 1999 and I just didn’t like the sound of Jughead - too chaotic, trying too hard and the rapping wasn’t that great to me (don’t kill me yall 😅). But I liked D&P overall.
Also The Batman needs to the next deluxe.
Then bring Parade.
I feel like with Mad House and Eric Leeds Album we have parade! IJS
Big Sexy askin the real question! “Where’s Parade?’. I can’t tell you how much I need that one on SDE Vinyl. Parade, Black Album, S.o.t.T., and Lovesexy is all one big trip. I wouldn’t be mad if they droppd The Flesh sessions in the parade SDE too. After that, (I think) I’ll be done. Lol. Nevertheless, I’m excited for this new drop.
May be my favorite Prince picture
GM, All! 💟
Can't wait til this set drops.. I need an Emancipation Deluxe !! That right there!
Look after the CDs and the vinyl properly and they won't skip.
One of my favs. Oh how I miss my "forever husband"😢❤
Yes, you every other women! 😜😜🙃😍💓❤🔥😋😊😏
@@dorothyedwards7225 ikr
This better be good. It's competing with my Daily Devotion. 😆
Best listened to from top to bottom! I can't wait for the vault releases with this. I fell in love with him in middle school during the early '80s with Dirty Mind album.
I was a fan of jughead from the first time I heard it⭐️💜
Great show! I’m a #justice4jughead kinda Brutha as well 😅🤘🏾
Heavy D performed on "Jam" the Dangerous album. 1991. Jughead - Tony M's rappin' ain't Chuck D. but - I love the content.
⭐ RUMOR has it PRINCE DESTROYED EVERYTHING in the VAULT before he died THAT'S why no NEW MUSIC is really being RELEASED (Just Throwbacks & Outtakes) ⭐
That’s not even true. Somebody lied to you
The song was played at the end of a football game, and it was called willing and abled by Prince.
My Tender Heart was released by Roise Gaines - really interested to hear Prince's version (With This Tear is another one I wanna hear!)
Get Blue is the WINNER on the Vault discs…
This Hold Me’s not Sheila’s. It’s the one Jevetta Steele did
And that Dayum Near 10 mins (original) Gett Off is THE version
I don't want to hear anything until this Super Deluxe is released. 😊
I can’t believe that I’ve heard a Prince song that Michael Dean hasn’t. Hold Me is not the Sheila E. Song. It’s a ballad that I think I like more than Open Book.
Hold me
We can make it through the rain
Hold me
We can weather anything
You and I are lost because of what some people say
There’s no justice in this world today
Hold me make this world just go away
Yes I have heard that version too, it does sound like a track that he would have written for a female singer
Thanks for clearing that up for me. Because when I saw the track listing, the first thought that came to mind was Sheila's Hold Me.
Jevetta Steele recorded it
I like prince's rapping I don't like Jughead because of Tony M. As far as NJS Don't Say U love me is the most NJS song Prince ever recorded.
The Prince, diamonds and pearls 3D hologram is postponed.
I was in college when D&P came out and I’m so glad to have lived during this time to see all this real time! #ProudGenX #PurpleFam
Really wanted to hear his parade outtakes
I wanna here the miles Davis album with prince
Great discussion. I can't wait to get this Super Deluxe Edition of Diamonds and Pearls! I cleaned up version of Get Blue is epic! An official version of Horny Pony?! Oh yeah. I'm getting the 7 cds and blu-ray too. It's been a long wait. 💜💜💜
Least favorite prince album….wish they’d do a deluxe “love Symbol” album….or “Lovesexy” deluxe album!
Don't worry if you're lookin silly, look over here at Michael Dean, working for Willie
😂
yeah man iam frozen...
Great, thanks !
Random question do y'all reckon they won't do another ORIGINALS album? I was kinda hoping for one as I like the concept but seeing tracks like "...Standing At The Altar" makes me think they might not...
I think that was only for to close the deal with TIDAL
Originals is still my fave of all the posthumous releases. A lot of songs I would have thought would be included are on this set’s Vault discs. So I don’t anticipate a part 2, unfortunately
The 90's in my opinion was Prince being the follower and not the leader. With D&P It was nice to see him back in the mix but for the most part I was like " meh". His foray into Hip Hop was cringy so basically I'm in it for the 33 extra songs. Hopefully I can pull from them and configure a non Tony M version of the album.
Well my introduction to Prince was D&P and he was different than everyone else then. His typhoon, his dress, the way he integrated gospel, rap and funk, his videos. I didn’t even grow up in the 80s and found him different and interesting. Parade era of raspberry beret and mountains sound basic and pop like to me. I loved Money Don’t matter tonight, diamonds and pearls, love me 2 da 9s, sweet baby, 7, damn u. They age well, morning paper, blue light. No one else sounded like that in the 90s to me
Is Trouble the Andre Cymone joint? I know the instrumental version shows up on some Prince bootlegs.
live 4 love early version is just awesome...its just perfection only prince does all his thing...great BASS and then takes it to next level...RAP LYRICS are just for nowdays stellar meaning ... the world is a shit hole
Where's Clockin the Jizz??
Blood On the sheets is incredible. 3Eg
Unless the footage was shot in film, which I hope it was, there is t anything they can do but do an “upscale” if the 480 video. With the videos it’s the sane. If they shit the videos on film and not video 4k can be achieved. No film no 4k. That simple
Not necessarily so. That Beatles doc on Apple TV was brilliantly remastered by a very painstaking process that’s pro’ly EXPENSIVE…but looks PHENOMENAL
Almost missed this at work
I’m very very excited about the Super Deluxe to Diamonds & Pearls. This is the album that took me from an enthusiast to a diehard. I loved that he incorporated the sounds of the day (Hip-Hop) and made it his own. It’s also amusing to see people lose their lids over that. Prince is MUSIC and him
experimenting with different musical styles made his music so much fun and made him so great to me. October 27th can’t get here fast enough!!!! 💎⚪️💜
Its Super expensive!!
Check out this song called!!!!
Everybody wants to be you…
By…Niki & The Dove…..
This is a song where you can tell that his influence is so real!!!
A true banger 😢😢😢
You will thank me later. Trust Me
Vinyl is a pain to manage. I go for the CD’s
✊🏾✊🏾
Is it true that the video including them, assuming the actual tracks audio from the CD single, of Violet, the organ grinder were excluded from this release?
If so, that’s seriously troublesome. There’s a Lots in diamonds and pearls that today would be considered offensive if you really obsess over them. Such ass, diamond. We’re all being told now about how diamonds are sourced in Africa. Here’s another one, the Sodom and Gomorrah scenes within certain songs and their videos, including grinder, are too religious for two exploited, sexually or something. And the use of diamond and pearl as sort of duel muses can be looked at as explosive, right? or sexist. I know there’s a meaning in that well hidden meaning. Including that the other may have been a gift of sorts to someone special in princes life. But I’m digressing, what else is there that would be considered offensive today?
I didn’t do u wrong I don’t have to anything
We need to talk.
Let me know.
When
The needles are expensive now
Oh wow, yeah!? How much?
On the contrary, there was just as much, or if not more, anticipation around Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous” album as it was for Prince’s album especially considering that Michael hadn’t had any new material released since 1987’s “Bad” album. Prince had an album every year since 1987’s “Sign O’ The Times” which was his last critically and commercially successful, non-soundtrack album. “The Black Album” was cancelled, “Lovesexy” was considered a box office flop, most attributed the success of the “Batman” soundtrack to the hype around the movie at the time, and the less said about “Graffiti Bridge” the better 😂 Michael had DOMINATED the 80s and of course everyone was ready to see if he would still have the same level of impact in the 90s that he had in the 80s.
did prince make sure Vanitys last rock. shut her mouth forever?
Hopefully Jughead has been removed and anything that's got Tony M in it, the worst rapper in history
Maybe, Blood on the sheets is a reference to The KKK😅 I know I'm reaching 💜💜
👋💜💟👏👍🙌🙏
Lovesexy / black album sde
Yikes
I'm not a diamond and pearls fan sorry
@HaroldGeorge-pe8gz I was definitely into more hip-hop and R&b by then because I didn't like the disbanding of the Revolution, but I still listened, but he was doing to much.I think I bought Come and Emancipation he lost the prince sound and went more commercial...but I still love him
@@myronscott8611 Ahhh, another dissenting purple voice! Yep. I remember the hype leading up to the album, and there was excitement, I had a few great experiences around it, but when I heard, and saw 'GettOff' I was like :-P
What the? From Lovesexy to, to ... this? New Jack Swing Prince? Come was great but Emancipation saw Prince become almost domesticated, and was now following and mimicking the then R&B sound, goatee included.
If you don't buy the Atmos version too your just play pimpin'!
