The Theme Park History of Halloween Horror Nights 1991-2018 (Universal Studios Orlando)
Vložit
- čas přidán 25. 10. 2018
- Halloween Horror Nights is an annual special event that occurs at Universal Studios theme parks in Florida, California, Singapore, and Japan. The Halloween-themed event occurs during the fall season and features haunted houses, scare zones, and live entertainment. In this video, we look at the event’s beginnings as Fright Nights in 1991, its growth and change to Halloween Horror Nights during the 1990s, the introduction of icons and changing homes to Islands of Adventure in the early 2000s, the event’s sweet sixteen and focus on intellectual properties during the late 2000s, the event’s 20th and 25th anniversary in 2010 and 2016, and this year’s event.

Imagine that $12 a ticket.... what a time that was
You're lucky to get a churro for $12 at the parks these days 😂
Not really that amazing when you consider 1 there where only a fraction of the mazes and 2 inflation
I mean it was only 1 house and some other things so kinda boring
Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights Japan is free. You buy a regular ticket, you can stay the whole night and do the houses.
I'll take more houses for more money... this is a VERY premium event
I mean even a home town haunted house costs more than that now!
Those Horror Night commercials give me life.
Don't think enough people talk about them, they always pumped me up for the event.
ExtraLifeWithNoLife I ran into another room so I would not even have to hear them when they came on. I’m more a Mickey’s Not So Scary type.......so a scaredy-cat.
I’m more of a Knott’s Scary Farm guy
I’m a Mickeys Not-So-Scary guy too
I look forward to Halloween commercials every year from BushGardens, Kings Dominion and Universal, etc but like Hessed and DisneyDude said I like Mickey's not so scary Halloween party. I'm personally sensitive to that kind of stuff and I also had a traumatic experience at Bush Gardens when I was 8
"For those that don't know who The Cryptkeeper is...."
A sentence has never made me feel older.
Tina Worley okay same
Same
If it hepls you, I grew up in the Tales from the Cript era, but I didn't knew about the Keeper until last year since in my country only people with pay tv could see the show.
I feel like these days kids only know of him from the masks they sell at party stores
He first appeared in late 1949.
I was a scareactor in 2006 for HHNXVI. I worked in the RUN: Hostile Territory house featuring Eddie. That was such a fun job, and I've made lifelong friends from the cast.
At a time when no one can really go to a theme park, it's got to be good to have those memories. Thanks for the great time!
Do you have any advice for a potential first-timer?
What role did you do?
That’s so cool!
Lifetime memories I'm sure, those were good years for HHN
$12.95 a ticket? And buy one get one half off?! Man how times have changed
Cesar Ruiz you aren’t kidding. Now it’s $60+ for a regular ticket and $130+ for any fast pass and other perks.
Exactly. I remember attending V. $145+ was the least you could pay to go this year with an express pass (which is mandatory if you want to comfortably experience the whole thing). And that price was only available for a handful of the dates. It's gotten so expensive. An express pass on a Thursday night did not used to be over $130. That's just stupid.
hahahaha no kidding I went to it this year and got vip and it was like 400 bucks
Pro tip: Do Stay and Scream, they let you in an hour early and you don't even need a Fast Pass. Then make sure you get the Half Night Fast Pass. It starts at 11PM (in 2017 it started at 10PM) when the event is at it's busiest and you pay only half the price of the full Fast Pass. I went to all 10 houses in 2018, spent an hour in Diagon Alley and got out an hour before the event ended.
Yeah, because the technology and upkeep today compared to the 90's is extremely difficult and much more expensive to maintain. They keep growing and giving new experiences, so prices go up
26:16 - "...guests would be given a choice of paths throughout each house." So you mean the mazes...were actually MAZES?!
What a concept right? Beats having to be waved on by an employee showing you wear to go.
@@ThemeParkHistory Waved? You are literally pushed and yelled at if you do not traverse the house at anything less than a brisk power walk
Yes, you did have a choice, and we built it that way simply as the sound stage allowed us to greatly expand.
@@ThemeParkHistory They use a tactic of "Scaring forward" Lol It's one of the oldest tricks in the book, Actor comes and scares behind you so you jump forward in the right direction
@@ThemeParkHistory great video and imagine chance the clown teams up with the joker, Harley Quinn, and pennywise the clown and speaking of the joker can u do Batman escape from arkham asylum at the Warner brothers studios please
UO Front Entrance employee here. If you're wondering why tickets are like $120/night when it was $12 thirty years ago, it's because of the houses they keep adding. The $12 ticket adjusted for inflation is $25, *BUT*, there were only like two houses in those days. The biggest reason for the price hikes is not only the number of houses (each house staffs between 25-75 team members/scare actors at any given time), but for licenses.
In the video, you see that for most of HHN's history, there have been original houses/stories. *BUT*, we live in the "IP-era" of theme parks. So, having a Stranger Things house (rights owned by Netflix) is expensive because it's popular. Want a Gremlins or Beetlejuice house (rights owned by Warner Bros.)? Again, expensive license. To keep merchandise at the same price (basically all T-shirts being like $28 or whatever) Universal takes a hit because of royalties paid. But Universal brings things like Stranger Things or GhostBusters, neither of which are Universal properties, but are things that guests demand, so Universal brings them in. Since merch is one of two ways theme parks make money (the other being food/alcohol), they have to raise ticket prices to cover overhead.
*TL;DR: Universal raises ticket prices so much because bringing in IP based properties Uni. doesn't own costs more money, so the ticket prices raise to cover the overhead. Theme parks DON'T make money from ticket sales. It all comes from merch and food/alcohol.*
Yea but unless you pay almost $100 more for a fast pass you don’t get to experience every house.
I swear the old woman playing the storyteller looks like she could be the sweetest old lady ever but yet she scares the crap out of me she's more scarier than the old woman from Drag Me to Hell
what is that video from?
Is it the actress that played alpha in walking dead?
Is it just me. It does she also look like the “demon granny” from Bill’s personal hell in the Bogus Journey film. The one who REALLY wanted a kiss.
@@natethegr8174 omg yes
I attended Halloween Horror Nights Sweet 16 and it was FREAKING AWESOME! The Scare Zones were so much fun. I loved that Jack was incorporated into the rides. He'd just appear randomly and sit next to someone that would freak people the fluff out! Completely worth it!
Has anyone noticed that Jack the Clown and Chance are basically the Halloween Horror Nights equivalent to the Joker and Harley Quinn respectively?
1992disney yep and that’s why I love them tbh
Missing them the last two years. Was hopping Chance would make an appearance this year, she was so good for HHN 26. I hope they go back to having a central theme like that again.
1992disney tbh I like them a lot more
Yes
Cept they are related
I wish horror nights would do a throw back night. With Friday the 13th the excorsist ect
marilynn maldonado Back in 2016 (my first time going) they had the exorcist but yeah a whole homecoming of retro slashers would be awesome for 2020
i think they'll do something like that this year, since it's there 30th anniversary
That’s not a bad idea, and would actually be pretty cool.
They would have actually done that, they would have the iconic icons back like Jack!!! Some retro themes hinting back to Fright Nights!!!
Sabrina Gordillo yeah, i'm so sad they cancelled 😭😭
I went in either 91 or 92 and it was terrifying. I was 9 years old, and the characters were allowed to physically grab you at the time! Like grab you by the waist when your back was to them. As a little girl with a wild imagination and shrill scream... Every single line I waited in I got a 'scare' from a cast member. It was really frightening as a kid, but looking back, it was a super fun Halloween celebration, and I'll definitely never forget it.
Hey everyone! Just as a heads up: just because we've made a video on Halloween Horror Nights doesn't mean we're done with the event just yet. We have future plans to cover the other parks (Hollywood/Japan/Singapore), specific storylines of haunted houses over the years, Bill and Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure and more!
We wanted to go into more detail with this video but doing so would have made the runtime closer to an hour and most likely wouldn't have been out till November, obviously missing the point of Halloween. We apologize if the video is a bit lackluster at points but with so much history it was hard deciding what to include and what not to. We also didn't want to use that much POV footage inside the houses due to the copyright strike we received for Universal's House of Horrors, we weren't willing to test our luck for a second time and jeopardize the future of the channel.
Theme Park History no wonder missing on Singapore n Japan
Did you just watch Expedition Theme Parks video and copy it into your own? Lame
Avenger gamer you must not have anything better to do than to pick on this man and his love of theme parks If you don't like the videos just don't watch him plain and simple you don't have to put him down just so you feel better
You could even do whole videos covering specific years or icons. I remember going over the online marketing for Reflections of Fear. The site showed a clean office, and new case files would appear. After so many days, the site changed to a run down area. Silver Screen had a full 3D theater that could be explored, and had lore about the event.

They need to bring Eddie back for HHN30 and have Chance there too!

@@killergarlicbread8796 Is Eddie and Chance coming back?
@@OddOneOut665 they had jack Eddie chance caretaker director usher lady luck fear storyteller and proably one I forgot and all the icons will all be in a house together
As a 90's kid from So Cal, I can attest to the fact that this was awesome to experience growing up. It got lamer over the years and people also changed. Everyone trying to act hard all the time, not letting themselves get scared or trying to act tough, sometimes even assaulting or disrespecting employees they're there to experience. Like anything else, people ruined it over time.
The nostalgia of watching the old HHN commercials brings back so many good memories
Never realized the Hollywood version of HHN struggled so badly in the beginning, especially since it seems to be doing very well in recent years...
It seems like the event itself was terrible, it was competing against a much more established event with Knott's Scary Farm. I still find myself like Knott's a bit more than HHN Hollywood because they've never really established their own story for each year like the Florida event outside of Hollywood Harry.
Actually it only ran one year in 1986 (before HHN orlando started) and stopped not because of financial underperformance but because a performer was accidentally killed (I was working the event that year): halloweenhorrornights.fandom.com/wiki/Halloween_Horror_Nights_1986
I only started paying attention to HHN a few years ago, so I'm shocked and totally jealous that there was such unique and original concepts for yearly icons up until the last 5 years or so! I would much prefer that type of one-of-a-kind experience to Stranger Things every year!
When u commented this ST house had only happened once. And now twice.
@@holllyrhode3 times 2017, 19 and 23 but yea i get what u mean
Growing up, every time one of those commercials came on the TV, I'd immediately leave the room because I knew I'd get nightmares.
From the look of the timeline, it can be summed up into one thing: What started out as a genuine horror event became a giant commercial.
I just went last weekend. It was good, but last year's was better.
@@gracecox4961 Why did you just copy another comment said two years ago, and besides, 6 months ago was December, so how did you even go "last weekend?"

I LIVE for CHUCKY. How could you not love horror movies

Man I feel ripped off, so much of this stuff was brushed over or skipped in Hollywood. Lots of people I know don't go anymore because it's been noticeably less ambitious every year.
I thought I was the only one who thought the same thing! I know they bring some of the same houses that Orlando has but it just seems to be a lack of icons and backstory to the Halloween event besides Hollywood Harry.
We flew out from Illinois this year for a vacation and we’re so upset we waited 1 hr for the terror tram and it was not fun nothing was actually scary and we were so disappointed each ticket was like 140 each :( if we would have known we would have just gone back to Disney or California adventure
Yeah sfmm now has like the same quality and is cheaper, universal was the best Halloween event in the past but now is less ambitious less scare actors trough the park less quality and more expensive
Knots scary farm is the go haunt. Has the best scare zones. The monsters don’t just reach out at you like at HHN. They get up in your face and chase you, it’s great!
@@bradleysanders88 They do that at HHN. Especially in the scare zones near the entrance of the park.
I love all the old commercials you included. It takes me back. They don't make them like that anymore.
I remember being scared shitless by the lets all go to lobby commercial when I saw it on tv lmao
I really think next year they should return to their roots: the early '90s. Have a few outdoor stage shows, thematic nods to how the park looked when it first opened, ect.
Even do the ads like they did in the early 1990s.
The parade too. I went the first time in 1997 as a I d, and the parade stood out so much
When I was little I used to be so scared of the first Jack the clown commercial I cried
All of their commercials were pretty scary. The Bloody Mary commercial was the scariest in my opinion.
Mr Rhett Duffy Same! Him and that story teller lady😖.
@@ThemeParkHistory The thing I really hate is jumpscares and that’s what the Bloody Mary commercial is.
this year having Ghostbusters, Killer Klownz From outer Space, Us, Stranger Things, Zombie Land, Universal Monsters and even House of 1000 Corpses, this year is just the absolute best

Fun fact, Bloody Mary was played by Laura Clery, the viral comedienne who does the character from Help Helen Smash.
I had my earbuds in and I turned up the volume to hear the lady, then the thunder made me jump
Watching this to refresh myself every year is amazing because now that Dr. Oddfellow is this year’s icon (YIPPEE!!) I can piece more together storywise and finally get to know this much-mentioned Oddfellow guy lol
This was such an amazing video - I am someone who was a scare actor for multiple years and was lucky enough to play the director in the sweet 16 show. I just wanted to say I will share this video with everyone. At 36 years old by watching this video I teared up as crazy as that sounds - horror nights makes up most of my life. I have went to every single year including fright nights. Wow.
When my wife and I were dating, we got the opportunity to be the King and Queen of Mardi Gras at Universal. Please do a history of that event.
This video is incredible. I have no idea how you found some of this stuff out and I appreciate how much hard work you put into it.
33 minutes? *yes please*
This video is an annual watch once it's Halloween time 🎃
I loved Tales from the Crypt. That show was boss when I was a kid. I use to stay up and get back up and watch it on TV late at night after my parents went to bed. Ahhh the good times.
HikaruRain they are all on CZcams now
[Brookie Cookie 🍪] With that knowledge, No one should hesitate to relive those memories.
Man this was a scary video. Great work on this.
The most frightening thing about this event has always been the lines. An express pass is mandatory and the prices are ridiculous nowadays. I wish he would have shown them.
This is, quite literally, my favorite video on CZcams. I watch this video every month. The narrator, the story, the effort that’s put into this video makes it one of my comfort CZcams videos. Thanks ThemePark History! ❤️
I agree this video is a masterpiece I could watch it over and over as if I never watched it once
I get scared easily, so I can't tell when a maze is genuinely good or if it sucks. If I get scared, its good to me. But the older HHN mazes look way scarier and more creative. I wish I were old enough/alive during those times
HHN 2019 was my first HHN we loved it, went to Stranger things, Ghostbusters, Universal Monsters and Killer Klowns from SPACE.

After Lady Luck it seems like something permanently shifted and i cant quite explain why but it just seems off. Dont get me wrong its still a blast but i really wish i got to experience the older, gorier, and more unique themes. Maybe its just the nostalgia i have for it but i miss how it used to be.
Natalie Brown my first time was this year and it just seemed meh. The houses were so packed with people in lines that they weren’t pausing between groups, it was literally a whole train of people. So once someone 10 people ahead of you got jumped at, you knew it was coming. It wasn’t scary anymore.
People complain and bitch too much, thats why interactions with the scaractors and guests have changed not to mention the lines and prices are fucking ridiculous
I haven't been to HHN since they had Bloody Mary but I have been watching coverage of the haunts and scare zones here on CZcams and it seems like there are three main problems. Overreliance on existing IPs, lower quality makeup/effects and an increase in actors seemingly phoning it in. Now, the first one isn't too big of an issue because Universal owns these properties and thus they can use them as they see fit. But when you have The Walking Dead and AHS for four plus years in a row it gets a bit old. Secondly the makeup and effects thing is also an issue. Now, as someone who also works at a Halloween attraction I know that sometimes the mask you're wearing comes loose or makeup starts to smudge as you sweat but if you're working for a multimillion dollar attraction then the mask you're wearing shouldn't look like something you fished out of the bargain bin at Spirit Halloween. I was watching a video from HHN 2014 I believe and this one girl was wearing a mask that looked like someone took a Xenomorph mask, painted it flesh tone and glued a wig to it. Also in that same video there was this scare zone revolving around post apocalyptic cannibals and you could tell that they were wearing some kind of headpiece to make them look bald save for a top knot. Lastly and most damning of all is actors that phone it in. Now, this is understandable in some cases; hell even I'm guilty of it. But it should only be done towards the end of the night and as a last resort. I've lost track of the times I've seen actors walk up to patrons and just growl/scream and walk away. The worst offender of this however was in an AHS house I saw coverage of a couple years back. In one scene themed after the Hotel season this blonde girl walked up to the patrons, went "bleh" and walked away; and if that's not bad enough as she was walking away she threw her hand over her shoulder as if to say "I don't care, go away." *Sigh* rant over, I'm passionate about scare acting and to see these kind of things time and time again is just disappointing.
Crow the mad i totally agree. It just seems like the passion is gone. I worked at a haunted house and I remember getting so excited and trying different skits to scare people. I really wanna continue to love this event but it just seems like such a cash grab.
@@ThomasKyleVideos Yeah, it's a shame really because I had quite a bit of fun when I went. I'm similar to you in that whenever haunting season starts I go all out and I try to get a feel for the room I get put in to see what kind of props are available to me and how many dark corners and crevices I can hide in. I've been doing this for seven years and I honestly feel I'll be doing it until I'm old and gray. If you're ever in south Florida around October look up Fright Nights at the South Florida Fairgrounds. Not to brag or anything but in the past we've had people who work at HHN come though and say we're better; both because we tend to divide lines into manageable groups and we give it our all even minutes before closing time.
I love Horror Nights being 80’s theme this year I love it 29 years in a row Universal does it again with horror

My mom came to America when she was 16 a few months before halloween. her boyfriend at the time invited her to go to Halloween horror nights. she said that she was so scared that she cried and he had to carry her through the rest of the park. since she spoke very little English and didn’t really know anything about Halloween or America she thought everything was real and that they were trapped. So if the Islands of Adventure sections each turned into their evil counterparts then Seuss Landing must've turned into live action film adaptations of Dr. Seuss's books.
Oh god-
Victoria Garcia Seuss Landing wasn’t touched. Just turned dark. The Seuss Estate would NOT allow the land to be turned to something “horror”
Personally, I would LOVE to see them bring back Silent Hill and Resident Evil, horror game representation in the park was such a cool idea, feeling like you where actually apart of the game, it would be sweet.

True true man. I want to see it live someday, I just hope the new movie gives it a chance.
How did Universal somehow get the same white guy to be in every ad
Awesome video. I went to HHN every year through 2006 (Sweet 16). I still have a shirt from each year in a box. There was another big change that happened with HHN after 9/11 that you didn't mention. Starting that year in 2001, the actors were no longer allowed to touch you. Before that, they would jump out and grab you and chase you down the street with a chainsaw.
Another thing they had was when they started having them themed around a character, the night would start with a story and you had to try and guess where the main character would appear next and if you got it right the main character would be there then they'd give you a clue where they would appear next and you could spend the night trying to 'solve' the story.
One cool thing they used to do was use existing rides in a new way. For example, at one of the early HHNs they converted the King Kong ride so instead of like normal when you'd be up in the air riding in the cable car, you were instead down on the ground in a burned out city. The haunted houses were also awesome, like the alien research facility, asylum, decent into Hell, and the haunted ship.
They also used to serve a drink at HHN called The Lobotomy which was five different types of rum and pineapple juice. I still make them myself.
I'd love to go back one more time!
This is officially my favorite video on CZcams! Thank you so very much for taking the time to make this masterpiece!!
I have watched this video so many times. HHN is on my bucket list and I’m so glad you took the time to do the history of the event. Thank you. 💕
I went to the one in 1992. It was absolute chaos. I was 16 and loved every minute of it!
Omg talk about the one in Singapore please as it uses original folklores from south east asia

I love seeing videos like this, it’s soo interesting how we purposely put ourselves through absolute terror year after year for that adrenaline rush, I personally can’t get enough of it! Hopefully this Coronavirus stuff doesn’t affect Halloween this year so I can go to my first Halloween Horror Nights!!!
I got another one for you, how about Universal Studios GrinchMas?
That's a good one, haven't decided on what we were going to do for the holiday season yet but consider Grinchmas added to the list, thank you for the suggestion Caesar Guy!
Also carnival of carnage had the best promotional website in my opinion! it was based on a click to play adventure as you uncovered clues about each haunted house as you explored the website. It really set the stage and anticipation, specially since new houses being announced meant new clues to uncover in the website. And the clues uncovered were shown on the actual haunted houses, so it was def fun XD

When I worked HHN Hollywood in the early 2000s, the makeup team was amazing. Everyone almost had a prosthetic peice or airbrushed face. Switch to last year my wife and I finally got the chance to go to HHN Florida (since we always heard it was so much better than Hollywood) we were excited. That quickly dropped as what we saw were very small scare zones, alot of dead space between zones and mazes. All the Scaractors seemed to just be wearing the same cheesy looking plastic latex masks. We were sorely disappointed. As someone who has been doing scare acting for a couple decades, Ill stick to the small time haunts now, they put more effort in.
Cool
Great Video again! I’m actually at HHN28 at Orlando right now.
I was there two weeks ago, i wish i had went to HHN but jumpscares and pregnancy don't mix. i wish i could have gone to the HHN island of fear with the dinosaur jumpscares though, those raptor costumes look amazing!!!!
Valforwing Productions Yeah, I still wish they held the Islands of Fear event. Also, you’re right, the raptor costumes for Jurassic Park Evolution looked amazing!
BEST HHN ORLANDO HISTORY VIDEO ON CZcams! Awesome job!
Thank you Great Lakes Media! That's high praise!
There's a ton of IPs that would make for good HHN mazes- Pan's Labyrinth, Venom, Dead Space, A Clockwork Orange (too controversial?), Cujo...
How would Venom work? Life Foundation lab? Riot teturms? Mayne even Carnage?
Symbiotic Firecracker Productions I mean, there was once a carnage maze
I'd like to see the woman in black
Clockwork orange would be pretty interesting
Cujo. Oh yeh
thanks for that jump scare with jack.
really do appreciate it
*sighs*
I love the historical glimpse. Thank you!
Thanks for watching llli!
Universal missed an opportunity there when they didn't name the Caretaker Dr. Rigor Mortis.
Been doing it every year for my birthday for 8 years, I always have a good time. As soon as they put up a resident evil and silent hill house I couldn't say no!
This was a great video, on a subject I adore "HALLOWEEN"" I live in the UK, and sadly we don;t do it half as good as the USA, but in my home the past 3 years it has been Halloween 365 days of the year, with my exhibits on display, as I love all things Horror. This History of the Universal Horror Nights was a joy to watch, well made and informative, I love the passion for Halloween you guys have, long may it last and well done on a superb video.
I love watching videos like this. Fun and informative! ❤️

Thank you for this; 2004 was my introduction and I haven't missed a year since!
The first 50 seconds were so scary - great job! :-D
Can we get a update video? After 2018?
HHN peaked 07-08 literally the best years to attend
You ain't lying, some of the best years I can recall.
As a scareactor a HHN for 5 years, this is an amazing video! I love it
