Catacombs of Paris | A walk-through

The Catacombs of Paris contain the skeletal remains of 6 million people. This underground ossuary used to be a stone quarry. In the late 1700s, the City of Paris decided to start emptying the graveyards in the city and store the remains in this underground location.
Many of the cemeteries in Paris at that time were overflowing and it was becoming a public health issue, with ground water being populated by decaying bodies.
The first relocations started in nightly procession in 1786 and the last human remains were stored in the catacombs in 1860.
Although none of the human remains in the catacombs are identifiable or named, the remains of some well-known people were moved there, such as Maximilien Robespierre (French Revolutionist), Princess Elisabeth of France (sister of French King Louis XVI), and Madame du Barry (mistress of French King Louis XV).
The Catacombs of Paris have been open to the public since the 1810s.
