17:03 While I agree that her dragon form doesn't need armor for protection in the physical sense, I'd argue that she *does* need it in more of a societal sense. first of all, as a member of the Dragon Guard, she needs to avoid friendly fire when fighting in her dragon form (imagine some ballista operator shooting her down because "oops"). Secondly, since she's ostensibly trying to fit in in Demacia, wearing armor even in her bestial form might help remind the other soldiers that she's "human", a person and comrade rather than a beast. It deliberately separates her from true dragons, as an attempt to gain her some measure of that acceptance she so craves.
This fan fic story of tbskyen’s almost made me cry. I really wish we could explore so many of League’s stories just like that.

I'm not totally sure how it gets there, but for an ending, I think a bit of poetry is in order, with Shyvana delivering the dying Jarvan to a rebel base

yea that's an AWESOME fanfic (oh such drama) but it as one minor plot hole it being the magesickers are a bunch of weak rob wearing wimps and jarvan has murdered armed an armored strong noxian soldiers by the past so if he has beff with them he very probably could exterminate the magesickers with just is fists or at least is spear and considering the emotional state of the character slaugthering the organisation that wants to kill a woman he loves dispite all it implies cause he loves her his likely
@@loicduchange4429 That's underselling the Mageseekers. Considering it's their job to deal with the magic threats of Demacia, one could imagine at least some level of skill on their part. Hell, the Legend of Runeterra cards (particularly the Mageseeker Inciter) suggest they use kinds of magic to deal with particularly dangerous threats.
But,combat is hardly their strength. The issue with the Mageseekers is how much sway they have. Their leader is wedded to one of the more powerful families in the nation, and ever since Sylas' escape one would assume he's been whispering in Jarvan's ear. Then, more importantly for Skyen's scenario the , entire country's anti-mage culture means the Mageseekers have a strong foundation. They're the good guys as far as many Demacians are concerned, so if Jarvan decided to ignore the Mageseekers the peasants might attempt to dethrone him for it. Assuming, of course, the Mageseekers in that scenario don't incite their own revolution from that.
Skyen, I hate to say it, but I doubt anyone could give that fanfic idea more justice than you did. I think you should write it yourself. That was just... oh man, it inspired me to finish a totally unrelated fanfic for a totally unrelated fandom. That cliffhanger was BRUTAL.

@@mistared4021 Sylas had captured J4 and they both found him dead. J4 blamed him, but Sylas seemed surprised and honestly disappointed since he'd wanted to do it. So the implication is either the mageseekers did it since he was about to dissolve the organization or the Black Rose did it to sow chaos.
I haven't seen any deep-dive into the failings of the sentinels of light event, so yes, I would like to watch your post-mortem analysis.

I'd love to hear your take on the whole sentinels thing. It's disappointed a whole lot of people and emotions ran pretty high in the discussions surrounding it. Would love a level-headed take and I think you'd pull that off wonderfully.
The event was bad because it revolved around 9 characters in a game with 150, and the characters it involved were so out of place it was a joke,

I am *ALWAYS* in the mood for a video about what went wrong with the Ruination event. They did all my fave characters *SO DIRTY* (alas, poor Yorick...) and getting an "expert eye" on how that happened would be nice.
I doubt they’d do it but an aftermath of the ruination could be cool, see what yorick and maokai are doing in the shadow isles now that the black mist has been halted, maybe side stories about each ruined character and the consequences of their ruined actions?
Listening to TB Skyen read his "fanfics of the future" is amazing, you can't help but wish and pray that this is what happens next and ho boy each one of these are amazing.
For shyvana wearing armor, one school of thought is "If she wears armor when human, where's it go when she shifts". I think a design using either tattered armor hanging off her dragon form, or better yet, specially designed dragon armor. Imagine an armor that's a bit bulky in human form, but expands when she shifts so it doesnt get torn and shattered.
I was thinking, what if her armor when she transforms kind of just, stays inside her, like it gets surrounded by skin and you can slightly see it still poking out from her and skin is growing on it
I would like it to be like Galakrond in Hearthstone for the class Warrior, the armor becomes kind of part of the skin and surrounds him, and when he is at level 3 he becomes fully armored
My thought went to "well her armor is exoskeleton when she's human to appear more human-like in a armored suit"
Maybe her armour also helps seal her dragon form, so would fall off when she transforms? Though that might clash with the lore and the narrative of her character...

Shyvana is the Xerath of Demacia. One day she's gonna get tired of waiting when Jarvan IV says something about freedom of mages and will take the matter into her hands. At least I hope so (not that she becomes a Xerath 2.0 but that her story is gonna move in a meaningful way, and not like 'A day in life of a demacian dragon' story)
Now that I've watched the video till the end I like the "The Future" part a lot!
hmm, makes me think of a future event against the void, with the kingdoms uniting to fight back against it, where azir talks with jarvan 4 about this with something like "do not repeat my mistake"

J4 really, really, really needs Ana for him to be able to drink his character development juice. I also like your story very much.
Jarvan IV needs Shyvana to be able to develop as a character but Shyvana deserves better than being stuck with Jarvan IV, and so the cycle continues...
@@jimstoesz3878 stuck with him? no. but like skyen says in the future section, she could be a catalyst for him. if jarvan decides to change, to honor his promise, it won't just be a good way of advancing every demacian storyline, it will make jarvan and shyvana an excellent pair of foils for azir and xerath. i think that such a change in the lore would be very good for league of legends as a whole.
This whole narrative could lead into a great demacian wrap up for sylas, shyvana, garen, lux, hell I’m pretty sure if the conflict is big enough you know kayle and morgana would be a part of that kind of story (If riot ever decided to ever f##king use their characters)
Personally would have J4 in skyen's story save shyvana and mage seeker basically take over demacia exile the prince

She has been my main since I started playing in season 7, I love the idea of a girl that hides her true nature from others to fit in because I can relate to that feeling
I think her human form should be a mix of her ironscales skin and the dragon guard armor, I love redhead Shyvana, ditch the helmet because it's stupid and give her long hair that turns into a tail when she becomes a dragon, I want the transformation to feel like a key part of her gameplay too, it already is but we need to enhance the experience because it feels really cool to just ram through people while this big dragon lady is engulfed in flames
Also give her some muscles and make her attack with claws made out of flames covering her hands instead of those gauntlets she currently has

Before the Lux comic, I definitely interpreted Jarvan as being a real catalyst for change in Demacia. I really didn’t like the characterization of Jarvan at the end of that. Anger is understandable but man they really just made him an ass and left him there. Hopefully one day they’ll let Jarvan grow…
That's what he represented before the Demacia rewrite. A young, hot-headed prince, eager to jump into the fray and bring honor to the kingdom. Old lore made sure to use this idea so that his capture would be the catalyst for his growth by having him going into a sort of "knightly quest" in search of self-discovery to become, one day, a better ruler worthy of succeeding his father. The problem is that, in the old lore, this happened all at once in his backstory, he came back and he was already grown and changed, becoming a beacon of change for Demacia as well. Now, i feel like, if we imagine for a second a different situation in Demacia, they could bring back that idea and use it to spur Jarvan's growth as a character. While current canonical Jarvan makes sense for the story they are telling, it still feels like a missed opportunity and a bit of a letdown to what he previously could have been.
And yeah, i know... say this because i mostly still hold on to the old stories but i really think this was a disappointing decision, to me at least. Hopefully they might find a way to bring this whole idea back into the current canon, one way or another.
@@uomoafide6539 I want the set ups from First Shield to have pay offs. I miss old Demacia lore because at least when they were boring and static they didn't take the character I've cared about for 6 years and turn his character inside out warping every dream goal and desire he had.
I do love how the Dragonguard has armor in her colors and style, kinda like Darius’ aesthetic becoming Noxus’ aesthetic.
Imagine Shyvana joining Noxus to oppose Jarvan. Kinda like Romeo and Juliet it's their ideals that keeps them apart.
@@letsrank9349 Shyv joining Noxus is rather far swung. The rebelling mage thing fits her best, since she doesn't wholly oppose Demacia as a rebel, but rather attempts to change it.
If she rolls in as a Noxian, she just tears down another home.
@@justascarecrow6988 Yet Noxus would've been a far better place for Shyvana than Demacia. I agree that the mage faction is very good, but I still have curiosity about how she'd react to a country where there is no discrimination on race or appearance, merely in power. And she has a lot of power. I could see Darius and the other militaristic people respecting her for her strength. And I'd love to see how Swain would plan on using her against the black rose
The fact that we're probably never getting a story as good as this ff is very sad.
This video made me rethink about how much I love Shyvana and how she could be much more, and also how I despise Tianna Crownguard

SKYEN’S STORYTELLING IS SO GOOD!!!! I really Just get lost in his voice and can really picture the scenario in my head, like it’s a cinematic!
I love the idea of the slow changes to a more draconic form as the game progresses. She’s a scaling champion but she sort of lacks the real oomph to feel like a scaling champion. Overhauling her into the same class as Kassadin, or, say, Kayle, would be great. Pitting her against Kayle directly in the story would be a brilliant direction to go with them.
The redesign you did is so sick. I feel like- it could be like Kayle. Pre level 6 she’s all buttoned up. post level 6 she could look all raged out and upset. I mean- her meter for her ult is called RAGE. And then transform into big beefy dragon. It’d be so sick. I’d main shyv more hahhha

I don't really follow League outside Skyen's videos, so I'm _very_ interested to see a breakdown of this ruined Ruination event I keep hearing about.
Didn’t they say that leagues official lore team didn’t work on the ruination event also I’m kinda hoping they deal more with the demons now since the ruination would’ve caused allot of chaos which they grow off of
@@jumarshmellow there isn't an "official lore team" as far as I am aware. There are the writers for the stories and the character bios etc., sure, but the skin team is just as much a part of the "lore" team as any other. Honestly the absence of a "lore" team and a lack of communication is probably what made it so bad.
PLEASE do a dissection of the Sentinels of Light event. I would love to hear your thoughts on it. Also, thank you for bringing light to my poor half-dragon girl!!
The Sentinels event gave the absolute coolest idea for Pantheon, showing that he was repossessed by the Pantheon while ruined, then becoming an Ascended to regain control of his body and to fight for Runeterra, which was a perfect touchstone of how he hates gods but has to become one to save humanity. Then the worst short of all time just has him show up, yell, and press Q once instead of having him becoming the god his supposedly canon skin presents
It´s even worse: Riot has confirmed that Ascended Pantheon isn´t canon because it´s a Prestige skin, and apparentely there is a rule that forbids that(?)

I've always had a soft spot for her. No matter how much she falls out of meta I really want to find a way to play her with a new style that hopefully doesn't get widespread and nerfed to the ground

I liked Subjectively version of Shivana. The idea of a dragon wearing armor has more to do with identification than protection. If you have two dragons, one of them being Shivana, going at each other and both have similar color schemes, how do you approach this? Having one of the dragons wear _something_ to identify its allegiance or identity is the key. Also, as a sidenote, I would like to see your take on the sentinels event Skyen.

i would LOVE a breakdown of your thoughts and feelings on the ruination event. your videos often take how i feel about league designs and put them into words, and while i might know how i feel about it generally, there's nothing like having someone validate my opinions and point out the things i missed.

I really like TB Skyen's story for how it connects to a theme of questioning the meaning of justice, from the varying perspectives of Jarvan, Shyvana, Garen, Sylas, The Mageseekers and the state of Demacia itself. I feel a symbolic tie to the questions of justice established in Kayle and Morgana's story, it's like a legacy inherited from Demacia's patron aspects.
Ahhhhhhhh I WANT THIS AS SHYV'S STORY REALLY BADLY?!?! Incredible for her, and incredible for Jarvan to have the moment of reckoning with how much he can actually do as a ruler to make Demacia better. What can he do to LEAD Demacia? To help more than just one person?
I also want a Sentinels of Light video too... mostly because there's a lot of criticism to be levelled at it, but I'd really like it if you could look at what was good about it too, and reasons for Riot to try a narrative push again.

Im totally interested in an analysis of the ruination event! as someone who didn't pay much attention to the story due to friends warning it kinda sucked (rip) I'd be interested in a video like that to understand where/why it went wrong since no one really could explain to me why it wasn't great.
also, great video again, I love these kind of videos breaking down a stories 'sense' using their own world and themes and just overall analyzing lore and designs.

As for Shyvana, I think a bulkier, Illaoi-like direction would be fun. She is a goddamn dragon after all, why is she 55kg?

This video had inspired me to design my own idea for a Shyvana visual update but I realized by the time I got to where you mentioned the artist you commissioned that the idea I was already getting had already been explored in this video lol.

My biggest complaint about ruined Shyvana is that without context that skin looks like a villain dark elf kind of character, who works halftime job as a special-guard-soldier for the demon king and the other time she cosplays for Tron: Legacy movie, but sleeps so little, that she often mixes the two
The awful part is that it looks kinda cool, I like it actually, but it doesn't suit both her and her story, like, at all
I want that story to be cannon, it was absolutely incredible! Going back and watching your videos and this might be my favourite so far😍

Thanks for the new vid, SKyen!!! Great as usual. I'd love to listen someone breakdown whatever the hell happened for the Sentinels event to turn out, well... as lackluster as it was. It was something I was very invested in until most of my favorite champions -- Pantheon and Yorick most of all -- got done SO dirty.

I think your design idea is cool, from a gameplay perspective as her bar fills she could become more draconic, ie. 25 fury she grows claws and gains bonus ad or on hit ap dmg, at 50 she gains mr and armour, 75 bonus ap and the dragon ability effects and at 100 can/must transform

That future lore was incredible! The writing of it is masterful and it is read so well! We can only hope that Riot sees this and finishes the story that Skyen so well wrought.
Personally I hope that Jarvan throws his spear through Shyvana’s shackles, leaving him weaponless. In need of Shyvanna’s rescue one more time. Then the next cliffhanger of whether she decides to fly to his rescue or go all Daenerys Targeryen on Demacia.
I think a video on the Sentinels event would be great, still topical enough (even though it’s been a few weeks) since it also is the largest event of the year. As a big fan of the lore I was extremely disappointed by the event and I like to hear other people and their perspectives on it. :)

Skyen got me wanting to write about the league universe … and here i was avoiding that cause i didnt wanna mess with the idea of the lore in my head
1. I feel like you should be a writer. Your storytelling is amazing.
2. I would love to hear you narrate a book or something. I was absolutely transfixed while you were describing that scene and audibly said "bruhhhhhh" when you did that hard cut.
Shyvana is my favorite champion in the lore and I appreciate you making this video Skyen. She really deserves the attention especially with having such a precarious and interesting place in current Demacia and even in relation to Jarvan. She could literally act as a lynchpin between whether Demacia continued to sink into it's magic hating bigotry, or forgoing decades of persecution in favor a stronger, more unified Demacia where Shyvana is comfortable retaining that close kinship with Jarvan who'd listen to her on how to treat magical people.
There was an idea from a mono shyvana called veralion about her kit that on the rework he would like to be able to use her fury before lvl 6 to give her more damage or something like that, it's would work like if you had to recast the ability to waste fury, a think this mechanics would suit really well with your idea of the smooth change on her look
I definitely think Gnar is closer to the mechanic Shyvana needs
I really enjoyed this more story focused what's the deal and I'd love to see more of it, perhaps in its own series.
for me, Shyvana was and still is lorewise one of the most interesting characters in league, and I am so deeply disappointed in her visual and gameplay design. A half dragon is such a cool concept and it feels just waisted at the moment. But for now, we can only wait for her rework somewhere in 22 or 23.
And yes, I would love to see/hear your take on the ruination event :)

I'd like to watch a video on the Sentinel of Light event. Such a tremendous flop, it's easily the most disectable thing Riot has done, from their intention, their design, and marketing goals, their priorities, and their ambitions.
since the Ruined Shyvana cinematic I've been begging for a small glimpse of Jarvan's reaction to it - maybe he tried to talk to her and get through to her true self, because he knows she's good, but he fails tragically - but no why would we get insight into any of Runeterra's leaders' reaction to the Ruination. I would take fanfiction too, just anything, but I guess I have to do it myself...
Shyvana was my first main and champion I will always hold dear in my heart...my first champ I had penta with...so I am very excited that she will get some visual update and probably even some ability update...as much as I love that she is quite easy and basic to play, I would also love her to have some bigger mechanic that will make her more useful in game, not just "build full AP shyv because you will one shot squishy champs with E in ult, without it you are quite useless"
As for the idea of her being regular almost normal human girl in humanl form when her passive is on 0 (or before 6) thats such cool idea...and as she collects and builds her rage, she slowly transforms visually into more half dragon, her body gets more spiky, clothes get torn (her feet can change into claws like she had in that art), her skin starts to emit flames or something and gets covered in dragon scales...and when she hits that full passive she will literally scream by her character model that she is half dragon and ready to transform into full dragon form (but she will still resemble in some way that she is not just regular infernal drake on Summoners rift, some character features that she has as human she will carry into dragon form)
I hope they will work on her more in some way in the lore as well...Jarvan could use some improvement as well in the story and she could be a good character to do that...right now Shyvana is like Lux, she is tolerated even tho she is something that Demacians hate and kill just because Jarvan says so....maybe build the story about how Demacian generals and army starts to lose trust in Jarvan as he has half dragon right next to him and Lux as mage (lets assume some saw her using magic? its still unclear if Warriors cinematic was in some way canon or not but Lux embraced that she is a mage in there, Galio came to help her because he knows she is mage and Garen's soldiers clearly saw it sooo? word can spread out, and she also lead mages through streets of capital)
And Jarvan is friends with them (some even know that J4 has/had feelings for Shyv), I feel Riot isnt making much of a deal about that but they should as Sylas was clear message to Demacia how mages are dangerous and Shyv was destroying the capital and killing Demacian soldiers (even tho without choice but still, Demacians wont care) so thats another red flag...
AND that could either force Jarvan to serve his kingdom ideology and abandon Shyvana in this (instead of executing her like everyone would want, he would most likely just send her to exile, mageseekers would still want her head tho, so in secret she would hunted) OR this hate on Lux and Shyvana could make him stand up a little for himself, first bowing to mage seekers saying "this is what your father would do" but slowly but surely build confidence in himself that he isnt his father, that he is the king now etc (that classic puppet boy king story) and start to change Demacia in some way that not all magical beings should be hunted down like they do now...which would be very difficult to do right now as Demacia is bloodthirsty for mage blood, many people would disagree and another civil war could be behind corner, but I am sure someone like Lux would try to help Shyv in this situation and try to reason with her aunt, Garen would help her sister etc
In conclusion I pretty much agree with what you said, if Lux showing her magic abilities spreads out at least a little and Shyvana destroying the capital is all canon... thats great way to open a new story for characters in Demacia and Demacia overall, maybe even start to change Demacian ideology...it wont happen over night but could be a gateway to progres in the story and lore

I was thinking about your idea with as she fights she gets more animalistic or dragon like. Probably can’t go completely through with the hulk thematic in her gameplay due to the exact same thing being used by Gnar but I was thinking the same thing
i think there's more game design space than just 'do it like gnar' when it comes to champions transforming in combat. for instance she could transform the long she stays in combat with no cooldown, and go back when she leaves. she could transform the more abilities she hits on champions, making sequencing your abilities properly key, as each ability empowers the others with half-dragon power.
I had this video playing in the background and when you got your "what if" "picture this" part I stopped my vanguard strikes and my eyes where fixed to the screen. I really don't think riot will do anything close to that and if they do it will be a few years haha, but it was amazing. Love your storytelling and your content

If Riot wanted to use that Ruined Shyvana skin, the story could have been about Viego manipulating her by making her look more human, and using that as leverage: "Well, you don't help me, you will have to go back looking like a dragon; you certainly would not want to do that, would you?"

That future fanfiction part was done SO well
Hey TB I know I'm late to the party but about that video on the ruination event, I noticed that Senna's follower in LoR kinda look like they were initially drafts for champion skins. Like the Demacian Sentinel very much looks like a Fiora skin, Dess and Ada look like if jinx was two people each with one gun, and the watcher on the isles has the same body type and vibe as Ryse, the ixtali sentinel seems like a Sivir skin to me.
So I now have this theory that they were going to be the skins and the characters we get in the event.
So my head is now filled with what ifs about them, since having them appear in the event instead of the actual champion would have given us more time to delve in the stories of the more important Champions like Senna, Lucian, Gwen, Vayne, Viego, Thresh, Vex, and Yorick Whose lore are already tied to this event.
I think it would make more sense if Shyvana linked up with Lux rather than Sylas. Sylas is too anti Demacian and I think that even if she was pushed out she wouldn’t go that far. Rather she would want to work to make a better Demacia which is what Lux is trying to do. It might also make for some interesting stories between the two. Bubbly happy girl and savage pessimistic half dragon.
Agreed also with Sona who is also running from Mage seekers: - pessimistic half dragon, bubbly girl and the mute musician that is a camping dynamic I want to see
I think Shyvana and Lux would have a really interesting character dynamic. Especially with how Lux is a rational thinker but has an optimistic world view and Shyvana is a very emotional thinker with a very rational world view

I love your story concept for the future of shyvana, i hope riot does something with her soon as her story is one that comes with a lot of conflict for J4 and his ideas of how demacia is supposed to work. And i would be very interested in your sentinels of light video
Okay but, Shyvana being exiled by Demacia, her feeling betrayed, and joining the resistance with Sylas. They are at odds and butt heads, but through battles and memories they share together, Shyvana starts to fall for Sylas. He makes her feel accepted for who she is, when that's all she was looking for while taking refuge in Demacia. Then it could play into a love triangle with Jarvin, Shyvana, and Sylas only to find out that behind the scenes Sylas is just that, a smooth talker. He's been abusing Shyvana's affection this whole time. It would be a fun story to play with. Then at the big battle, the truth can come out and Jarvin can get his girl/happy ending; or Shyv still can't forgive Jarvin for the part he played in the mage hunt and relates Sylas' manipulation to that of Viego and her experiences during the Ruination and decides she's a free and independent woman cause fuck men.

Funny enough, at the time the event kept my attention just for one and only thing, shyvana (thought she was super cool looking that's pretty much it) but this detail put aside... I wasn't that much interested in the sense that I wasn't motivated to play league just to get the story of the event. But I still want to get a glimpse of it, so yea, if you could do it, it will make my day.
I'd personally really like a video on the sentinels event. Lord know' riot's not going to give me any kind of catharsis on that dumpster fire, so a meaty video on it sounds like just what I need.
I dont play league of legends, I have no plan of playing league of legends and my only connection to the game are your videos because I am interested in the design and storytelling perspectives and hot takes.
