New Aatrox has been a divisive rework, to say the least. For my part, I like him, even if his introduction and new lore concept does introduce almost as many plot holes to League of Legends as it fills.
So! Let's have a chat about him, about the Darkin, about why he's so bloody loud in his voicelines, and how it all stacks up in the broader view!

The anomalous young woman Kai'sa seems to have a will stronger than that of a Sunborn and even a star dragon.

Kai'Sa never went to the actual void that was opened during the Shurima Void Event. The rift was mostly closed by the Ascended. Currently in Shurima there are small void tears that void creatures come out of and inhabit a bunch of underground caverns and caves near Icathia and other parts of Shurima. The current Shurimans refer to that as the Void as they don't actually know of the true horrors of the void from the past war. Kai'Sa was only ever in those caverns/caves so she was never really exposed to the same void that the Ascended were exposed to - Rioter Reav3 in the boards.
I dont agree with it (my opinion), but this is the explain of Riot.
The VA really sells the tragedy in his delivery of "how far I have fallen" as if aatrox is choking back tears.

I really like new Aatrox, but the only problem I have with him is the almost complete lack of interaction with Shuriman characters. You would think he'd be astonished to see Azir revived, or shocked at what happened to Renekton, or pissed off because Xerath indirectly caused his downfall. But he only has two lines with Nasus and nothing more.
Zenith Tempest the thing is he doesn’t really care; he has blind rage as a mask for terror and he couldn’t care less if azir was revived: he wants to kill him
Maybe he doesnt care, and he Just wants to kill them, im supposed he doesnt have a voice line on Mordekaiser
He has a voice line with renekton relating his inprisonment to renektons insanity and offers to release him from his curse as he cannot release himself
I wouldve liked Azir to have one towards Aatrox. Something like "You fell Shurima, but it lives on. Through me!" Or something along those lines. Just something where Azir acknowledges him.

On the point of the Darkin not looking Shuriman, I think that's kinda the point. Instead of beastial demi-gods clad in golden armour, they're mutated humans coloured red by their blood magic with dull, grey metal growing from them in a sort of twisted reflection of their past armour. It shows how far they have fallen, and how unsuccessful their attempts to regain their past glory really are. They only have human bodies to work with, and that's simply not enough.

On the Riot universe page, they have artwork depicting what the Darkin form is. They did use to be anthropomorphic, animal/human hybrids, but after Shurima's fall, they learnt the magic to reform their bodies into weapons, wings, hardened scales etc.

I understand that aatrox should be more serious and shit, but man, funny man aatrox has a charm to him.
I think the jokey taunts work as being part of his bluster. He's just making observations and just goading them into attacking... But after he kills them it should be probably a little more relieved than victorious. Also you are right, he should have more meaningful taunts for Varus and Rhaast.
I really think that all that Taunt/Jokes are because of the character being depressed... As someone who is constantly being depressed and getting out of it a little and then falling again, I can totally understand the jokes feel off... Because depressed people use jokes to hide that they are like that, so no one can really see that all the jokes are just to hide how You feel
I think that works with Aatrox because he was once a mighty leader and now he is kinda the same but in the "Destroy everything" way, so He cannot let people see how bad He feels

Exactly. Even when he says "How far i've fallen! A God... reduced to a prisoner!" in that sentence he feels depressed and you can feel it so it makes sense with what you have said.
The voice line writers don’t give a shit about the characters depression, the reason they made jokes is bc they thought they were funny, not only are they not but the delivery is shit. For some reason everyone seems to think that this is some real person, making convoluted connections to his voice lines and his lore, two separately created things. The reason they’re so drastically different is bc the people who did it have different intentions in mind, not because some fictional character has depression and the writers are trying to show that in a subtle way.

I kinda agree with you, but this torment of Saddness is worse than real life depresion, most People do the jokes to say, hey im fine, dont be sad, laugh, enjoy your life, do not become a part of me, so making Aatrox, a Destroyer, a world ender, and then making him do a bunch of jokes is kinda rediculous, like most of them arent even that funny, the one with Taric is probably my favorite, but the rest are very lame, and by taunting the rest of the Darkin isnt very the Best uprouch, look at God King Garen, he has a bunch of voice lines were he says, WARSHIP ME MORTALS, IM YOUR GOD, and then they make a very good joke with Katarina and its like, Lol What? XD, but Aatrox is full of jokes that would work on other champs such as Morde, like Morde being this Metalhead version of sauron really fits the theme of jokes because he is like, im all Powerfull,i Mortal, destructive, so im gonna make fun of all the other weaklings Who walk on the same soil as i do, with Aatrox though he sould have atleast 5 or 4 jokes to make it work, by giving him 500 jokes you basicly convinced People that he is a meme and not a SERIOUS and deep character.

Is it wrong of me to love aatrox's jokes. I think it adds to his character. he is not just whining about his past 24/7 we already have yasuo and riven. he tries to get the thrill of battle with the come quotes and with the jokes he shows how confident he is even tho he is suicidal, not wanting to show his enemies that he is afraid.
Jasin Barbata I read it as him trying to psyche himself up. Particularly the lines where he talks to himself by name lead me to believe he is trying to convince himself and the outside world that he has it all together when he totally does not.
Before he was a prisoner who wishes nothing more but death/freedom he was a warrior who fears nothing, so yeah I guess it makes sense.

It's more like, when he kills absolutely everything, destroys absolutely everything such as the Targonians and ASol the universe league is set in will be broken and erased.
thats what i was thinking. im guessing aatrox to some extent knows this possibillity too, but he shields his mind from that possibility just because the immense despair that scenario will bring him.
I personally like the idea that Aatrox uses comedy and the Skeletor-esque persona to hide from just how much he hates himself.
And the other Darkin know about this. But don't really know what to do.
To play along with his act would be to simply avoid the issue itself.
and to refuse the act or outright call out the fact he's just doing it to avoid the problem, only pisses him off something fierce.
Causing him to become more distant and evasive of those who might understand and help him. He's given up and become resigned to his destructive self-loathing and no longer cares for any alternative, simply wanting it all to end.
Aatrox doesn't want hope, he wants confirmation and resignation.

Doesn't this mean that when/if Kayn purges Rhaast from the Scythe that he is finally dead and is 'released' from his suffering? I'm fascinated by the new lore.
Not really. Nothing can kill them, so Kayn brobaly can't do anything about it either. He most likely simply pushes Rhaast's mind deep into the scythe making him unable to answer back. He is basically trapping him even more.
The Choob It’s actually not that simple. The other Darkin aren’t suffering. They are imprisoned, yes, but it’s more like they’re sleeping when they’re not trying to lure or take over a host. Aatrox was the first, and his spell...it failed, partly. His prison was faulty. It was meant to be stasis. Instead, it was infinite suffering. That’s what drove him to suicidal, all-annihilating madness.
He would still be trapped in the scythe I think, it’s just that Kayn gains full control of the weapon instead of being consumed by it.
Pretty sure it's just, kayn gets full control while rhaast just has to sit and watch
Okay I know Aatrox has a pretty depressing story but, I find it hilarious that he's ready to destroy the world because of the chance it could kill him too.

It’s all he can think of; he tried everything else. I mean the magic that trapped him came from the trickster. Maybe if he kills the aspect of twilight the curse is broken
I can’t imagine what years, maybe decades of not being able to feel anything or move, even to die would do to a man.
All his good voicelines have a lot of emotion because he sounds like he is on the verge of crying
The old darkin, in lore, were a bit different in that they came from a world that had battled with the void for even longer and as they were soon to be destroyed, noticed runeterra and sent some darkin to go there, prepare them against the void and maybe the Darkin would recover there. Aatrox was the leader of them and they taught bloodmagic to e.g. what is now Noxus. However they were perceived as too chaotic in their attempts to prepare them against the void, they always incited war, saying those that remained would be stronger for it and subsequently were locked into their weapons. More darkin never came due to this. Aatrox was either never really bound or really early was freed again. He continued to prepare runeterrans against the void now trying to keep a better balance so they would not be bound again and find his brethrens' bloodwells and free them.

Lance Leon uhh, both got the same-ish English accent though- And Rhaast is already halfway attached to his host.
Either way each Darkin seems to work differently. Aatrox with decaying hosts, Varus with his gay couple, Rhaast sucking souls instead of blood...

I'm unsure how to feel about the new Aatrox. I will miss the inspiring quotes of the old one, but I absolutely love the new HEMA guard based animations.
I never actually minded the old one, so I don't mind this one either. I like to play him now, so I'm fine, but I do feel that he is kind of "weird". He would have been better as a standalone champion, instead of Aatrox.
Although after watching the video, I think he is actually kinda cool like he is (lore wise).

You improved the view of the new aatrox. 1 thing though. Shuriman ascended have these animalistic traits, and I could see that in Rhaast with his shark-ish apearance. So Aatrox could've had really small hints to his animalistic appearance. and maybe he has? was he a bat? horns could've been the ears, wings like a bat?
I think the animations are pretty shit. Yeah they look impressive but thats an acrobat not a fighter, tossing your sword letting it do a 360 spin and then catching it and smashing it to the ground seems really stupid to me.

To mention your critique about them not looking shuriman- They're flesh demon weapons that take hosts, they're not in their original bodies or in the vicinity of ancient Shuriman clothing.
My biggest gripe about them making Darkin into Ascended is the lack of a connection to the Egyptian god animal-head aesthetic (Justicar Aatrox aint no animal-head, and why is there suddenly a lot of Ascended peeps?). They could have based him around Set (Egyptian god of disorder, violence) and Apep (serpent of chaos, THEY COULD A KEPT THE BOUNCY SWORD AS A SNEK BLADE). Set, beyond his long ass snout, could fit his old horn design and the usual headdress shape of Egyptian dieties. Maybe a sand theme too, since Egypt, also Set was also god of storms. Like him forming out of the sword like sand out of an hourglass, and the sand absorbs the blood and dries it quickly.

Any chance we could get a "What's the deal with Gnar?", considering I don't know if his lore works with the current incarnation of what Yordles are.
It could work just fine. If Yordles embody a certain aspect of their habitat, then Gnar represents the ingeniousness, but also the ferocity of the wilderness.
I definitely wanna see what is up with Gnar sometime soon-ish. However, I think Gnar needs a small revamp in the context of his lore. He isnt so much tied to Yordle lore as much as the Iceborn/Watcher lore currently. I wanna say his magic as a Yordle was tampered with by the Watchers, or he was frozen in true ice, and somehow got out recently-ish...but I haven't read his story in a while, and Rengo's story is already out of date.
Unfortunately, to that end, we still have no clue who the Watchers were, nor if/why they were different from the Ascended, the naturally born Gods of Runeterra, or Void creatures. How did they make true ice? Did they even do that or were they tampering with existing materials? Why is Lissandra serving them when she already has her effective immortality? IS she even serving them? Ornn's story suggested the enchantment on the Howling Abyss' bridge was placed in secret, but we never learn the purpose. I have to consider Lissandra's story you can hear at the end of ARAM games to be out of date at this point unless its confirmed to still be in context of whatever comes next. Either way heck yes lets hear new Gnar stories!
The Watchers have been confirmed to be the Gods of the Void. It is they who create the lesser races like Rek'Sai to serve as their army.
Something I wanted to point out about his voice lines that someone pointed out to me, is that when he says "I am Darkin, I can not die!", "I can not be destroyed!", and "I do not die!". He is not trying to taunt or intimidate his opponent, he is lashing out in anger. He was hoping he would not respawn. Now I personally would be liked it if he became a bit choked when he says he can't die, but that's just me.
"I like war! War is great! Let's just kill...things and have war!"
That line cracked me up so hard. Should be one of the official quotes, really.

Aatrox is an Angel guys, in the story it says he was beautiful, his wings like gold (he as a bird/angel)
I love the new voice. The actor gives one of the most impressive performances since Kled, and even if it's not to your taste, you have to at least give him props for that. I like it, however. It is angry and self-assured and powerful, the true voice of a world ender.

I don't see any reason to harp on an accent, I don't think Riot use accents the way that they are traditionally thought of. They don't tend to use them for regions, rather the character of the champion. They said that they made Fiora french because they were trying to hit the elegant duellist theme as hard as possible and the accent just fit the territory. The accent that Aatrox has does a similar thing, it adds a little extra punch to some of the voice lines and sounds like quite an aggressive way of speaking, perfect for him to be honest.

I kinda disagree when you were talking about how Darkin should look more like twisted Shuriman, From what I can tell in the lore there seems to be enough time for the darkin to sort of come unto their own as an aesthetic and as people. I don't know, I suppose that sounds like sort of a copout for exploring that aesthetic but I don't think the design of the darkin need to reflect perfectly onto the aesthetic of the ascended. Definitely agree about the voice lines and I do agree that something could be done to either remove the cheesy joke lines or move them onto the joke instead of the taunt. All in all I feel it's a much needed improvement from the old Aatrox, much more nuanced in terms of character.
Yesss.... I agree. Some of his voice lines are good. With this video I understand the change in personality. But I disagree with his old version not being interesting. I personally saw him as calm and taunting with a sense of mystery. He seemed wise in the art of war and was cunning with a side of secrecy.
His new lines make him sound desperate like how you said. He sounds more out of control giving you the feeling to take him less serious. He does have a few good roasting lines. He is pretty funny. I do also enjoy the lines when he is pretty serious. his new personality in game definately goes from 0-10. I think thats why there are people complaining about this lol
I saw his in game animations and found where the part of ever rotting flesh is. In game supposedly he keeps a more humanoid form to have the body burn up slower. But when he used his ultimate form he grows a pair of ( almost angelic designed) wings , grows larger in size , pulsates red and small pieces fly off of him as ash. When he dies in this form his body literally starts burning up, big chunks of burned flesh fly off as dust and he does a classic horror movie terrified run (he looks like he is about to trip over and his hands try to grasp something invisible). To me the last animation really makes me believe the terrified of losing the body and returning to the sword part.
So I love the new Aatrox and he's one of my mains now. I love a lot of his lines, and the character that they set up. Stuff like "fear the silence of annihilation!" Does a lot for his chatacterization in-game and out. And I totally agree, the jokes take away from the character. But I gotta be honest, they're kind of my guilty pleasure xD

He reminds me of people (or even myself) with depression. Escaping his reality and/or mind in one single thing. Wich is war and fighting for him. in the moments (and voicelines) in wich he realises this he sounds paniced? and full of despair. Remenissing his past.

I actually prefer the old aatrox's kit, because I'd fits with the new role, by the way you were describing it. If he is rotting every minute, his ripped wings gave it away and his weird ass blended colour. He looked anorexian, if that is a word, but also his w, blood thirst, helped him survive through his mission and there is a price to it, blood fucking price. FEELS BAD

Ah. The other ascended probably served as troop leaders and as Shurima was an empire it makes sense that the other ascended were scattered protecting the borders of the impere. Nasus and renekton were geographically close to azyr and this was why the other ascended tried to stop azir
So, there's one thing that is coming to my mind.
With this expansion, we stray away even farther from the notion that, some time in the past of runeterra, there were the "Rune Wars"
Even more power been put on Shurima and stuff.

Personally, I believe this Aatrox should have been a completely new character. They could have had a lot more freedom with him, and they could also have kept old Aatrox and simply updated him, keeping him as the sort of spirit of war that he was. Failing that, I wish they'd have kept some aspects of the old voice. That was a very powerful voice, that worked well for the character.
The lore is so good. i love it. i just wish his voice lines where less joking and more resentful and darker and chaotic.

I was talking about this with my friends, and Aatrox's new lore makes me wonder about the other Darkin - insofar as, are the others strange twisted aspects/gods of Something, too.
For instance, I'd like to see a retelling of Varus (the Darkin) being an aspect/god of Love, as a tragic mirror of how the two humans he inhabits were in love.

38:00 I recommend checking the riot universe page, where there is some artwork on the Darkin race. Apparently they used to be the anthropomorphised human-animal hybrid creatures, but because they needed to survive for so long without Shurima and its magic to sustain them, they needed to embrace different magicks, like warping their flesh into new forms that suited their needs better, like the 'parasites' in the anime, Parasyte : The Maxim. (This explains why Renekton and Nasus didn't change into this, Nasus too smart, Renekton & Xerath trapped in the prison)
Loved the video though, good analysis of the v/o and of the character in reference to the lore
P.S. He has one voice line that kinda connects his suffering to another character, Renekton. He says something like "In your imprisonment, you know my suffering. As thanks, I will end you"....something something

I still love new Aatrox, I liked the old one too. He was the first champ I bought with IP. I basically only played bot games with Aatrox for like 20 levels.

I agree about his excessively loud jokes. However, I actually love the emotion on his serious lines.
i am not sure if you read this already but in one of the new lore stories on the universe website, it is stated that after the fall of shurima the then known "darkin" started learning i think illegal sorceries and they started to trandsform themselves and their armor so that is why they look different. They arent supposed to look shuriman anymore, they left that behind after they became darkin.

Thanks for the in depth commentary on the whole deal of the new aatrox, I really thought the new aatrox was bad just because he was really loud and bcuz of those awful taunts, but learning from u his whole backstory what really changed my opinion alot about the new aatrox, if they could just mellow down the jokes and taunts in a more serious side, aatrox could be better for me and maybe 4 some. i think that showing Aatrox to most of the league of legends population as a cocky god demon for the lazy player not looking for lore and make him secretly desperate and insecure is really interesting , kinda like the character is hiding the truth
Brilliant voice line concept. How representative of today's case of hurt masculinity and spiritual weakness. It is truly very real and relatable I think all that cloaking of character or the loss of hope and the expression of it through addiction or silliness.
I feel like the whole thing about the Varus taunt is a inside joke. When they where reworking him someone must have said "If he's going to be a Darkin we need to add another A there" and someone asked why and the answer was "Well, there was memo back in the day saying that the Darkin should have two A"
I really love the rework, though I'll admit I didnt play too much of old aatrox, the only thing I wished they did was pull back on the loud, angry, "I'm going to destroy everything" lines, and maybe put more focus into the lines that reflect his new lore, a few great examples are his questioning void corruption, him speaking about his new twisted form, or even the line about his mastery being evident, more lines like those I think would suit him quite well.
My read was that his jokey jokes were a coping mechanism for his eternal torment, that he gets with Long Moves, kinda like your read if I'm hearing you right. I agree that his jokey jokes (I started saying that in RL, thanks Skyen) should be in the joke command, and not in the taunt command.
When the Sion rework came out, iirc they mentioned that his voice lines when he's away from combat were him remembering his past, but when he's near the fight he is the war machine again.
I really think the whole idea of the Darkin (at least what we have now) and to make that parallel that we dont have now, about the link with Shurima. Show Aatrox, Rhaast and Varus in the old days, in their godlike form. Maybe with, I dont know, the darkin sister Varus is looking for, with a cool cinematic. Showing the before, the corruption and the present forms.
Rhaast could be, in the old day, a snake naja god and the horns ARENT SUPOSE TO BE HORNS, but the decay make be like that (maybe Rhaast even dont like that, is something that causes pain to him to see). Varus being an insect like ascendent and Aatrox something like Seker, with glorious wings and a falcon helmet and a actually human face. And then show how their forms (that arent actual Shurima dark parody) ARE SHURIMA DARK PARODY, but we cant see because we didnt know the form appereance of the darkin boys
I like the jokes for aatrox the jokes seem like a coaping mechanism and part of his expression for liking having a body and war
He sorta reminds me of the Disney Hades btw with the voice lines and dissonance there from depressing to sad

Also keep in mind the Darkin stopped looking like the traditional Egyptian inspired Ascended a while ago when they started practicing dark arts on their bodies such as gaining biological armor
IMO, I think it would have been best if the Darkin (fallen Ascended) turned insane/corrupted DURING the war with Icathia, and that they had to be put down and imprisoned immediately after its conclusion by the Targonians (Zoe and Pantheon), as these "Darkin" returned to Shurima and rebelled against their emperor, diving lands among themselves. Perhaps Aatrox, in his nobility, thought that he alone could defend the world from the Void's resurgence, and that he as a proud god-warrior should be the new emperor. If that was the case, then it would have made sense for Nasus and Renekton to have been the only remaining Ascended by the time Xerath did his little betrayal thing, thus no plot holes would have formed from this update.
Otherwise, I kinda like Aatrox's rework (not too fond of his jokes, but his moody serious lines are pure gold).
EDIT: I just realized that the way the Darkin take and twist living flesh to make new forms fitting their own image is exactly the same as what the Watchers do by taking organic matter and then twisting it in order to create the Voidborn. That would actually give more credence to the theory that the Darkin had been straight up corrupted by the Void, and that's kinda cool.
Damn I actually relate to aatrox quite a lot now, before I absolutely detested the rework and now I'm all for it, lived with severe depression for around 8 years, was suicidal for many of them, it's just like living in a cage, and when you're in your worst state it's just like without a body, you feel nothing but emptyness and darkness, I too used to hate everything about myself and only wanted it all to end, but just like aatrox I could never bring myself to do it, just saught ways for others to do it to me/end it for me. I feel a lot of empathy for his character now, makes him much more dynamic, thankfully I'm just about out of the woods and doing much better now but for a while before I kept relentlessly chasing something that I probably couldn't have, glad they decided to go this way.

What's the deal with Azir, maybe? Now seems to be a good time to segue into him. I think his own lore (especially the extended one) is kinda at odds with the kind of character he's meant to come off as, particularly with the whole slave liberation thing and how he treats Xerath. Would be nice if you can analyze that!
Oh my God I know this is old but what if that lend into the decaying body idea and the lower his hp the more his body looks fraying and weak will the closer to full he looks like his current model almost normal given him more of a drain tank feel will giving that call back to his lote

I think a better thing to do with the whole "I intend the destroy the world so I can finnaly die" thing is to maybe give him his redemption through it? Like maybe that was originally his goal, but maybe every person he possesses leaves a bit of themself behind even as their body decays and is replaced. Eventually he finds meaning or even beauty in existence and it conflicts with his own self loathing. Then just like the cocky antagonism, his hatred for the mortals becomes performative too, which is why he comes off kind of ridiculous and perhaps it could even prompt Zoe to reward him by reversing or even altering the original binding spell.
Reformed/Ascended Aatrox would make a really cool skin btw.
When it is stated that the void war changed the ascended into darkin i don't think it meant mentally, I think it means physically.
Aatrox has a line about how he doesn't know if he is a void creature or not so the form you see with Rhast and Aatrox is a mix between ascended and void. There is also the fact that all ascended have animal forms (excluding Xerath) you can see it in Rhast with his hammer head shark head. Also the thing with sending Renekton and Nasus away is simply they where the only ascended in the capitol. Shurima was a massive nation and had to have their military widespread. Last note, his quote on the varus about 2 a's is riot taking notice of fan theories about darking all having 2 a's.

I don't particularly play LoL, but I've become really interested in the lore. Thus when I heard about Aatrox, I couldn't wait to see when Skyen would talk about him so that I'd get a digesble explanation of what a Darkin was/is within the LoL universe without having to scour the wiki. Now that that's happened though... I will say I was NOT expecting Aatrox to turn out to be a "I am literally trying to delete the universe, please end me by any means necesary if you can." It's a cool kind of existential horror, a living nightmare for him to inhabit and all, and it's even more cool to imagine what he looked like in his glory days (I don't know any of his skins, in case they flesh him out), but... His design screams more along the lines of "Primordial Demon" than "Warrior fallen from grace," to me.

The short story reminds me of the end of "I have no mouth and I must scream". The loss of control and the futility in not being able to end oneself.
I know this is old but, I see the taunts as what brothers say to Brothers. Or even close friends. You know how to get underneath their skin, but it's still relatively harmless.
old aatrox is one of the few champions that i've never even look at it. Thats how much i liked old aatrox

i loved your take on aatrox, i never thought he was such a tragic character until i watch your video. I always thought he was this, spiteful being who relished in battle. But battle not the cause. Its just a tool for him.
The brazilian VA is amazing. It really sells the 'how far I have fallen'.

The whole deteriorating stuck in the sword thing screams Raziel to me. They should've focused more on the decaying part and maybe incorporated it somehow into his kit. Maybe at low HP you see parts of him fall off? Or he is decayed and when using his ult he gets the big buff version we see.
Something kinda fascinating going back through these videos is that a lot of the lore decisions are pretty good... made a bit sour by some kind of other decision riot made on top of the lore changes. I love Darkins I even have a derivative version in a D&D setting I run, but I also way preferred old Aatrox in terms of gameplay so it's bittersweet.

I feel like they did a mistake in giving him a shuriman origin. They should have made him an archangel from mount targon who was send to shurima to lead the other ascended warriors. That eould have also explained his wings as well as his extreme size that he tries to achieve but cant.
By setting his origin on mount targon or rather the heavens, it would also make more sense why he hates Pantheon so much, since they might have known each other directly as in Aatrox being one of the the highest ranks of the "gods", admiring Pantheon and not hesitating to descent to earth to deal with the void threat. (it makes sense that he most likely took control of a host just like all the other aspects, but at that point he isn't bound the weapon he wields and can return to the heavens if he wills so)
Yet after the void has been defeated the whole drama ensued with Aatrox taking the lead of the other, at that point not so darkin looking, warriors. It is hard to come up with what they might have fought for, maybe Aatrox has lost some of his hope in humanity? And maybe he wanted to reign over the world and bring order? There would have been a lot of possibilities, after all Aatrox would be mentally unstable after the horrors of icathia. So the darkin were beaten without warning from mount targon, therefore giving birth to Aatrox's path of vengeance against the gods and existence, and especially against Pantheon and the other aspects.
(I have typed this in haste on my phone, so I haven't given it any deeper thought yet. I might want to read ilthe stories more thoroughly myself)
