I had a mechanic try something like that on me once. I asked him who he'd prefer me to call first, my bank or the cops.
He suddenly decided we had a "misunderstanding," and he took off the charges for the services I never asked for.
Same deal here.
I don't know why but this sort of scheme sounds common amongst some mechanics.

Had a similar interaction with a customer once. The products we sold had a tax rate that was nearly double normal consumer goods, so people were often a little shocked at the price when they were given the final total.
I rang up one such surprised customer and he started asking me if he could get any special deals since he had only planned to spend $300, not $336. I told him I didn't have any deals I could give him, to which he replied, "But you can give me the tax." I interpreted this as an 'I'm screwed' joke, saying that he couldn't get any deals but at least he got saddled with such a large additional tax. We both laughed and I said, "Yeah," and continued getting the card reader ready since, as a retailer, I obviously have no control over the money the government charges for sales tax.
When he went to swipe on our card reader that displayed the total, he paused, got confused, and then got mad asking why the price was the same. So I had to explain to him what I _thought_ he meant (since customers joking about the tax at our store was incredibly common because it was shockingly high). This didn't make him feel any better, so I reminded him he was certainly not obligated to buy anything from our store if it was not within his budget, and if he did not wish to complete the transaction, we'd be happy to take the items he had and put them back on the shelf for him. He bought the stuff anyway and left the store grumbling.

While he's being ridiculous here it's Hamish's fault for not checking the EFTPOS machine to see what price he was being charged.
Hamish definitely should have checked the total before agreeing to the transaction. That does not, in any way, mean that Rowan was right. Both are definitely in the wrong.

There is no rule/law that says that you can't seel things above a certain price.

@Srithor well crap, here I thought that was perfectly normal. Quite often I'll have a random previous life event (or sometimes a figment of my imagination) pop up in my mind. This can last the course of a day or longer, or maybe 30 sec, and it alters my mood at the time. Tho I try to hide it. Don't want people questioning why I'm laughing randomly, or why there's steam coming out of my ears for no apperant reason
