A lot of people do behave like NPCs without any free will a lot of the time in public. I think this is especially true in a bigger city like NYC or LA. There were a couple of stories not too long ago about a woman being assaulted in public, and nobody even bothering to intervene or even act like anything was amiss. And another story about two people fist fighting in a subway train, also with nobody even so much as batting an eye. Part of it seems to truly be a bystander effect. Some of it might also be self-preservation. But another part of it seems like these people are just too traumatized to do anything but pretend like everything is normal.

On a serious note I went to a local restaurant once and there were loads of problems with our food, we had to keep sending it back. We could hear mumbled arguing and shouting in the kitchen and each time the same waitress kept coming out she looked more and more stressed. Needless to say the chef came out after we complained again, we explained what was wrong with our food and he ended up having a full blown argument with the waitress in front of us. We just walked out at that point as we felt mega uncomfortable.
So, yea, I can actually relate to this sketch.

Way back when, as a 16 year old high school kid, I worked in a restaurant after school. My job was started as a dish washer and then rose to an appetizer preparer. One of my key functions, since I was in and out of the walk cooler, was to ensure the keg of Heineken was tapped and chilled mugs were on hand. The beer was not for the customers but rather for the head line chef on duty that night. My job along with setting up the shrimp and other appetizers was to keep him in cold beer as he cooked thru out the shift. He normally was fairly looped by the end of the night, but each and every night his wife would pick him up and take him home. He made really good money from what I understood as his cooking was great. I was eventually fired for eating more of the shrimp than was going out to the diners.
