  • Sam Harris speaks with Roland Griffiths about psychedelics and mortality. They discuss the current state of psychedelic research, the timeline for FDA approvals, the risks to mental health posed by psychedelics in vulnerable populations, the use of psychedelics among the well, the relationship between psychedelics and meditation, advice for “bad” trips, microdosing, Roland’s stage-4 cancer diagnosis, reflections on death, and other topics.
Roland Griffiths, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurosciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and founding Director of the Johns Hopkins Center on Psychedelic and Consciousness Research. He is author of 420 journal articles and book chapters, and has trained more than 50 postdoctoral research fellows. Roland has been a consultant to the National Institutes of Health, to numerous pharmaceutical companies in the development of new psychotropic drugs, and as a member of the Expert Advisory Panel on Drug Dependence for the World Health Organization. Roland has a long-term meditation practice and has been conducting human research with psychedelics for more than 20 years.

Huge respect for Sam for having great sense of tact, empathy and not dividing that particular podcast into CZcams- half a conversation and subscribe-full episode version. Some topics are too serious and have massive weight and should be presented to broader audience. Absolutely fantastic guest, if I could only be half as brave and wise when time comes. Thank you for that discussion and being in my life.

I was unaware of Roland's diagnosis and deeply saddened. I wish him a meaningful, comfortable life and sincerely hope the graceful acceptance of his diagnosis staysp with him and his family until the end.
I'm not one for fan worship, and always found it slightly difficult to understand the level of sincere sadness people experience when their favourite pop star dies. I guess I'm closer to understanding that today. As someone who is fascinated and hopeful of the potential of psychedelic therapy, I hold Roland along with Rick Doblin and Robin Carhart-Harris as my 'heroes'.
Roland, if you happen to read this, I'm sure there are countless thousands of other lay people out there who follow your work and will echo my sentiments, and no doubt millions who will yet benefit from the results of your research who may never know your name, yet would want to thank you for the part you will have played in changing those future lives.
Thank You. I hope you have more time than you imagined possible right now.

I've done close to 200 psychedelic sessions, all in a ceremonial or therapeutic setting. They changed my life. Formerly I had been stuck with patterns of anger and anxiety. I recognized those and worked on healing/ replacing them. I have replaced them with peace and joy. I was always a happy go-lucky person in a part-time way, and that has become full-time. It was a lot of work but for me the key is to work with Ayahuasca. I've worked with all modalities and strongly prefer organic compounds over synthetics. I also find Huachuma (San Pedro) to be very beneficial and capable of deep healing. Good luck to all.

This past February at the end of an unremarkable gym workout, I had a widow-maker heart attack. My heart stopped twice on the ambulance ride to the hospital and 10 more times during surgeries to save my life. At one point, I heard an ER physician say flatly, "He just flatlined again." I knew I was dying. Each time I lost consciousness it was peaceful and painless. Coming back to life was disorienting and extremely painful. I don't fear death and when it comes, I will be ready. In the meantime, I am going to live my life. I realize my experience is anecdotal. I am so happy to be alive!

I have been the primary caregiver of family members suffering from severe mental illness. I met many patients and their families throughout my life in psychiatric wards. . Many cases of schizophrenia and psychosis are triggered by use of psychedelic drugs. This not just anecdotal but proven by many researches and also consolidated in the DSM, While I appreciated that research is proving these drugs useful in treating other conditions. the potential danger to other patients is criminally understated in the media nowdays. Please remember that one bad trip can cause chronic psychosis on people with genetic predisposition. If you care for morals, do not forget them. They are no outkasts or B list citizens only because they are 'crazy' , they deserve society's respect and protection

Let the science speak, not hearsay. I "know" somebody who broke their back on mushrooms, numerous people who have taken one dose and "tripped" permanently for several years, a man who died from an overdose of psilocybin- of course none of this is actually true. I've also cared for the mentally ill, and known many patients and their families. The mental health system, the medicalisation of normal human emotion, horrific poorly understood drugs, and barbaric practices such as lying to patients about the "chemical imbalance" theory of depression, the debunked link between low serotonin and depression, the horrific overuse and abuse of electrive conclusive therapy, lobotomy-
these are all far greater threats to the mental and emotional well-being of the suffering and vulnerable
I literally heard a psychiatrist telling a patient to think of electricity as "Food for the brain"... disgusting, immoral behavior.
The real threat to people experiencing mental and emotional distress is, and always has been- the mental health system.

I tried mushrooms recently. I wouldn't recommend a large dose if you're afraid of the psychedelic effects, but microdoses seem very tame in comparison. It's so tame for me, I've seen no down sides. It seems purely medicinal my from very limited experience. I'm looking forward to cycling off of it in another week to see what changes.
First I took a 4 gram dose, and .2 grams every day since for a week now. The original dose wasn't all that psychedelic to me, but maybe I expected too much. I mostly just listened to music in a comfy seat. I use marijuana edibles often, and it seemed about as psychedelic as a strong edible high. My muscles felt very relaxed and I could feel my jaw falling open. My hearing and vision were enhanced, and visuals further enhanced what I was hearing. My peripheral vision was on high alert, but not in an anxious way. My brain was interpreting the dynamics between shadows and light differently. I seemed like I could hear the air between the speakers rather than the speakers themselves, which I guess is technically what's happening. I didn't get that effect with headphones though. The little psychedelic effect it did have was very reassuring to my previous personal philosophies. I experienced some spiritual incites that are adjacent to previous enlightenments I've had, but also unique and interesting. I had a little nausea when I moved around too quickly at the peak of the high. The typical visuals description of "melting walls" was kind of accurate, but I could also focus through it and it would go away. I plan on doing a higher dose to see if I can get to what I consider a "trip." To be honest, I had an "ego-death" experience a few months back smoking a sketchy weed cartridge. I've had some remaining effects from that too, and mushrooms kind of reaffirm it a bit.
As for the microdosing, overall, I've felt very calm this week. The afterglow of endorphins I've had from a runner's high is the closest thing I can compare these microdoses to. I'm not an anxious person, but I'm particularly anxiety free this week. It's like tension I didn't know I had is gone. My mind will usually race a lot. I'll jump from one thing to the next, hypothesizing any number of things. I feel like the mushrooms have tamped that down a bit and made me think a bit more gracefully and clearly. The microdose also seems to enhance marijuana highs. That, or the marijuana makes me feel the microdose more. I've felt more conscious of my boredom this week too. I had a couple spontaneous bike rides and hikes this week just as a result.

I had friends who were at the party when it happened. They say he kept speaking to seemingly no one, and was asking where “those voices” were coming from. He never recovered.
I chatted with a friend recently who said that this man is now extremely schizophrenic, homeless, and a shell of his former, outstanding self. There is nothing more heartbreaking.

Hi everyone, meditations, is some types of updates our minds, which means, we can practice to make our minds clear from the things which we doesn’t need to carry on in ourselves, and that doesn’t have to be with the old ways of meditation as we know! another words, we can do meditation anywhere even when we are driving, or we’re sitting in a train or we’re walking 🚶‍♀️ all we need to do is to focusing our conscious minds on it , in my experience’s, at some environments like steam room & Sunna, where your body is in the pressure, by the heat from outside and our minds can be more active and more conscious, and more creative !

Really interesting and reenforcing as a layman long term practicer of psychedelics and meditation (I’m 59 and have been practicing meditation for over 30 years). The integration of both to be a much more widespread option, including ceremonially as part of a revival of festivals / rights of passage in a new form is the only way I see to practically bring us to a common understanding and spread ‘waking up’ throughout humanity. I would suggest that UFOs / UAPs are examples of cultures that did this and progressed to higher levels. Experimentation with consciousness is I believe a birth right opportunity we should all have an avenue to take if we so choose in this existence and not be persecuted for it.

This does not appear to me to be random but quite directed and with purpose. In some way Roland, you can consider yourself chosen, you have been heard, your work regarded highly and your soul cherished.

To make progress on the question of what awareness and consciousness is, ask "What is awareness/thought physically made of ?" The answer to that is the same as the solution of "What is an oscillating rotating photon physically made of ?" There is a solution, and an epistemological path to it. But be careful in assuming that proving 'asymptotic' answers to the deepest questions will enlighten or transform the behavior of humanity. The is-ought gap has no bridge for many, such as: life a cosmological miracle not equal to caring how they value or treat others. Value every day if possible; no one gets out of this life aware.

How amazing. What a time where a person can put something on record in a lasting format. God bless you Roland. See you on the other side. Thanks for doing this Sam. I needed this discussion and I think the world does too. I disagree that institutions should have a controlimg stake in an individual’s consciousness. There are risks with psychedelics as there are with driving a car or crossing a road or swimming in the ocean. If you can’t swim, don’t jump in the deep end. I know scores of people who have done psychedelics. I know one who has schizophrenia and he had an uncle who had it. Crossing this line should not be taken likely but given only one life, I can’t personally justify avoiding any experience that might more precisely explain to me what this reality is. Everyone is different and everyone is connected. Every person must choose their own path and should be free to do that absent institutional permission or supervision. Sorry for the rant. Roland keeps using terms like, "alcohol abuse disorder" and "major depressive disorder". These are not disorders of the people. Alcohol addiction (for example) is neither a choice nor a disease. It is an attempt to solve a problem. People who are suffering become alcoholics. People who are lacking something they need attempt to find it through different addictive behaviors that give them temporary relief in the short term. When you understand the context that cause people's addictions, you stop looking at it like its some genetic abnormality, or a disease, or a choice. If you reject this because you were able to fight off your own feelings of depression and are judging others for not being able to do the same thing, then you don't have the slightest clue what it is like to be profoundly depressed to a state where choice no longer exists.
Psychedelics are very useful because they can reset your brain and help you unlearn psychological wounds that you have sustained in your life that you've been carrying with you. Psychedelics can help you see through a completely fresh new lens and show you that it is in fact possible to heal from your traumas.

The etomoligy of spirit is from the Latin spiritus, which can mean soul, ghost, courage, vigor, or breath. So a lot of variety in meaning right from the start.
Perhaps a simple definition of Secular Spiritualism could be - Spiritualism without the design/baggage of a supernatural reality.
