People commenting on Beck's lack of energy... he wasn't well. He had a spine injury and other health problems. That's why he wasn't moving around as much as he used to do and had the puppets and the dancing guy. He went through a few years of misery, because of his health, but it's great to have him back on form once again. His peformance at Coachella last week was amazing. Beck is back.
The whole band was 'locked in' this night-really 'feelin it'. Along with a super-receptive audience being the catalyst for such a Great,Great performance! With a great recording catching it all!!
the recording would have been taken straight from the mixing board into a computer and mixed for TV later. bad live sound wouldn't have had much to do with it.
some comments are misguided. my reply is Beck is a gifted musician that, when not performing solo (he's an accomplished soloist, as well), selects his band-mates and support carefully. He has performed/recorded with some of the best musicians around for years now.

devil's haircut sounded pretty shit, and i'm sure that's down to V's typical lacklustre sound system. they ruined the red hot chili peppers' performance back in '03. i mean, listen to the bass on devil's haircut and on black tambourine - sounds whack. virtually non-existent.
