  • Dr Clare Bent, Interventional Radiology Consultant, performs a varicocele embolization on a male patient at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital. This pin hole surgery through the jugular vein will help improve his fertility. The procedure was live streamed to a meeting at the hospital of local MP Desmond Swayne and several local councillors to highlight the benefits interventional radiology can give to patients as a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery. The Royal Bournemouth Hospital is the major Interventional Radiology centre for Dorset and south Wiltshire, providing specialist services for a population of over 1,000,000, including emergency repair of complex aneurysms.

Why we don t ask the patient to perform a valsalva manoeuver while injecting the contrast at the same time in order to search for other small branches shown by this manoeuvre so maybe more coils should be administered in order to block the flow to these vein so they won t hypertrophy later? Is it unecessary because only stage 3 and 4 varicocele are of clinical significance? Thank you

is the patiant awake during this? did he have sedation? would have been good to speak to him before and after his op to explain how he felt and if he felt anything while on the table.

This is normally done with patients awake, as she mentioned she gave local anaesthetic which numbs the area she went through.

this terrifies the hell out of me, today at my foot dr appt he referred me to interventional radiology due to blocked arteries in both of my legs, I suffer from super high anxiety and also with my ADHD there is NO way in hell I'd be able to just lay there fully awake, I'd have a major panic attack as soon as I hit the room you guys are in, and I wouldn't be able to stay still...knowing that more then likely I'll be awake for the unblocking, I'd rather keep my blocked arteries rather then deal with being awake during this...esp not with my anxiety as bad as it is....just watching this on video triggered a panic attack

for procedures like this they typically give some form or sedation and/or anti anxiety medication. it’s definitely worth at least talking to the doctor about and voicing your concerns. good luck!

Hi yes it was good if you are having the procedure done for a varicosil in my case the surgeon did the left side put the coil in the middle of my kidney and testical and said new healthy veins would grow

I’m not sure I would think it would of been something like platinum or knowing the NHs some cheap plastic if you are trying for kids I have a low sperm count I thought all hope was lost but it’s possible I have had a endrocronologist appointment and the person has offered me gonasi hcg testosterone replacement therapy kills sperm but this hcg injections improve testosterone without killing sperm and it also increases sperm ! I am waiting for another appointment with him and blood tests and has to be hospital funded he is very confident that I will get the funding it’s a big journey for us both but never give up hope!

Why isn’t your mask over your nose? And why isn’t everyone wearing a mask? It’s a sterile field and hopefully you didn’t give the patient an infection but not wearing your PPE properly.
