My name is Hammo and I stream on Twitch! I play a variety of "map games" and strategy games, but my favourite game by far is Hearts of Iron IV.
I love this game and it's complexity, strategy and historical focus, but these are also reasons people can find it hard to get into Hoi4. The endless spreadsheets, statistics, buffs and debuffs can be overwhelming without someone to show you the ropes, which is where this channel comes in!
I will be creating and posting beginners guides, tutorials, walkthroughs, tips and tricks videos, just about everything I can to get you playing and enjoying Hearts of Iron IV as much as I do!

A few tips that will, in my opinion, make your life easier in hoi4 without using too much cheesing:
1. add support AA in all your divisions
This will deny enemy air support and make them bleed, downing hundreds of CAS and bombers per day, even level 1 AA reduces pentalties by whopping 67%
2. Don't add engineers to every unit
While engineers are a cool addition to defensive templates offensive divisions dont benefits as much, and engineers cost a lot (30 support equipment per division). For offensive version of engineers use medium tank flame company.
3. If you use tanks, don't add to many support companies to the template.
Support companies while attractive reduce armor, piercing, organizations, and some other stats that are really important to tanks, use only what you really need (like AA)
4. Aim for at least 35-40 organization in your templates.
This will help you stay in battle longer and use all other stats to their fullest potential.
5. Don't stress too much about combat width.
While there are some widths that are better than others, having fully supplied troops is more important
Support AA also has a little bit of piercing against tanks
Great advice for new players, yall take note (especially on the engineers)
Flame tanks have been debuffed and now light flame tanks are better for oc cost to what you get
I love you

Honestly, since i play alot of minor nations a big tip i got anyone, use that frontline 22 width and just use mountaineers as assaulting units u can increase the cap by getting more of those garrison template’s in the field, but add light tank recon on them, the tanks don’t have to be good either just for the speed bonuses alone this can be vital for encirclements!! And the reason why u want to use special forces like marines mountaineers or para’s is because u can upgrade them trough research on top of the doctrine you allready have, aswell as high army commanders who give extra special force attacks like Romania has, pretty much they enjoy both from special force bonus+ infantry bonus+ doctrine+their own research tree in the infantry equipment tab.
Tank recon is great! Try out flame tanks as a support company too, they works excellent
Awesome video made me understand some things, but with the 1.13 update combat width changed, so a lot of us would appreciate if you would make an updated video :D
When I'm back from my holiday I'll be working on it!
@@hammotimee Awesome! Until then, enjoy your holiday!

Man, all of these divisions are freaking MASSIVE compared to what I typically use. I like the details of what force-mixes are most effective for what jobs, but I've never really had any problems kicking ass with divisions that average about half the size of most of the ones you just showed. Granted my win percentages drop at the highest difficulties, but even then I can still pull it off with a bit more effort.
Hey, there's more than one way to skin a cat as Jimmy Fallon likes to say!

really good guid
Thanks! Glad to help :)
nice bro
Thanks!
Very nice guide, only one thing:
Logistic companies, at least in SP, are not really worth it.
They take way to much production and research to be worth it.
You don't really need them in Europe, since there is enough supply, and by the time you are fighting in Asia and Russia (as long as you don't play Japan) you should already have Organizer for your field Marshall (especially with Italy, Russia and Germany since they can easily grind it in Spanish civil war or Ethiopia).
And countries with small industry benefit more from other tech like engineers, AA, etc.
Thank you! I hear what you're saying, however I do disagree for the most part
Supply companies should only really be used on your attacking divisions which use a lot of supply, so the amount of equipment you need isn't really that expensive. Most games I'll have around 3 mils on support equipment at the start of the game and that's all I need 😁
You could get away without using them in Europe, but there are so many terrains where supply sucks, like Africa, China, the middle east etc
Appreciate the tips for AA, its something I normally neglect and I like playing w/ support companies so definitely some things to try out. Also, thanks for showing that 20 Width isn't the generalist anymore, any tips for developing infrastructure/supply lines?
Happy to help! And I actually have a whole video on supply, check it out: czcams.com/video/liEqCqmr4mg/video.html&ab_channel=HammoTimee
Nice tutorial
Nice comment! 😅
Great explanation! One thing I think could be 'explained' more. When you go into your example divisions, lots of support companies are attached to them. In the beginning of the game (especially with smaller nations), you dont really have the capacity to do that. Are there 'must' support companies to include even in the early stages?
Thanks, and great point! For infantry, I would always start with artillery, AA then engineers if you want them
As an EU4 main im enjoying Hoi4 way more after recent DLCs. I think this is a major improvement as annoying as some people find it to have to keep track of so much more now with building templates. But it's great to see given the model these games operate on. I know for sure the recent updates to supply and CW and several others will go down as some of the better HoI4 design changes.
I guess we should be patient with some newer titles. In 2017 HoI4 was much more simplistic. But our standards are set really high. I dont think PDX is quick to make big changes like this. Sad to see Imperator go the way it did. I still want Imperator II done in their newer UI style. That game is one of Paradox's best but least successful GS titles.
Yeah I agree! These games always get better with time, they're so complex they can't really deliver all this on release
personally, not saying your standard infantry design isn't bad. it looks pretty solid, but I prefer to have six infantry battalions, with one artillery battalion in the rear. then use the artillery, and engineer (logistics and field hospital occasionally) support companies. its a pretty well rounded unit, and is versatile in its usage on a a frontline.
That'll work too! I'd use a design like that for a minor nation, but for a major where I'd have 100+ divisions, the production that goes onto the arty and support equipment I'd usually put on air and tanks 😁
Alright, question, how do piercing and armor relate to eachother in more detail, as compared to hard attack and hardness, which was straightforwardly explained? Similarly, more depth to breakthrough/defense compared to health, org., and normal attack values.
Oh man this needs a whole video on it's own haha
Nice templates
Danke danke danke :D
6:30
So we obviously need to anticipate enemy army composition in terms how hard/soft they are. Without playing so deep yet, I'd assume it's done by agents gathering intel? And it can generally be deduced by checking AI country and focuses?
Yep spies can do it if you have la resistance, otherwise it's safe to assume infantry = mainly soft, tanks = mainly hard 😁
hey, can I ask something. So i have this Paratroop division consist of 6 Units and 3 Artilleries. It said i can paradrop but when I try to land it (but there's no war, just for practice), there's no division assigned. Is something wrong?
Can't paradrop when not at war I'm pretty sure!
@@hammotimee ahh okay, so you can only do that in Wartime huh. Okay then
i know i’m a little bit later but i was wondering does 4 columns with 3 each of lets say infantry equals to 3 columns with 4 infantry each? like does the order chance something in the stats? and what would be the “face fronting” batallions, the ones at the right-most column? thanks in advance
Yep it doesn't matter except that you can only have the same battalion type in each column, eg infantry only, mech only, tanks only
When you're in the division designer screen, does it make a difference if battalions (of the same type) are placed vertical under each other, or horizontal next to each other (vertical they don't have to be the same type of battalion, but they do have to be the same, motorized or on foot, right?) For example at 6:17 you have 3 stacks of 3 Inf Bn, but at 11:11 you have 2 stacks of 5 Cav Bn
Nope! 😊
My brain watching this video:
Wow! Such great info! I can't wait to use this and level up my playing. Haha jk ima forget about almost all of this and spam units with 700 billion combat width and ignore all of my supply and wonder why Piland is killing me.
Hahaha that's the human condition
This is a bit of a thought, but what about a complete motorized division?Like mainly motorized without tanks. I think it might be good but just want to know what could be helpful in making a template for it without dlc
Yeah they absolutely have a use! I've been making some motorised divisions to pair up with my tanks to support them through a breakthrough, they're pretty much just fast infantry. If you want them to have good stats, mechanised is the better option as they actually have hardness too!
I have had a lot of success with 30 width motorized inf division with Artillery, Recon, medium flame tanks, AA and logistics.
I use these in lieu of tanks when I go mobile warfare (left branch/right branch) because they actually have a lot of attacking power and free up a lot of industry for your planes
before this guide i kept losing to ai after watching this basically just steamrolled the allies good vid man
Thanks so much! I appreciate it!
How do you get enough equipment for all that? Do you always just run a deficit?
I only add on components to the design when I have enough equipment. So at the start it's usually just support arty
Defense and breakthrough are not opposite of each other like armor/peircing. They are exact same stat, just one is used for defender, the other for attacker, but mechanically they are the same.
Explain that to a beginner and see how they understand that 😂
@@hammotimee to be honest i understood it and i've never once made a single division template ever
@@Crimsrn you've just used the default divisions?!??
@@hammotimee yea they function alright
@@hammotimee ignore that i have 800 hours
Why do you need a support artillery division in your template if you already have artillery division's in it ? Does it boost the artillery that much or could you just leave it out and put something else in it ?
It does boost a lot, especially if you go down superior firepower doctrine, you can get +50% to your support artillery
@@hammotimee kk thanks for helping me with this one
i still dont understand, how i should fill my 24 general spots. Is it better like having a general with 24 infs or for example 5 arti, 5 tank and 14 infs.
That's a great question! You're better off having the same type of unit under a general, because then your general will gain traits faster for that type of unit. I've made a video on general traits you can see here 😁
czcams.com/video/uM_SIAXwld8/video.htmlsi=pq1aF6MEUrXr1GzM
Thank you for your quick answer. As a beginner, your videos are very usefull :) @@hammotimee
I've got a question: how do you produce so much equipment for such big templates?
Great Q! I'll build civs until 1938/39 then switch fully to mils, I always try to get 15-25 factories on guns depending on the size of the country!
If you also want a bit more army XP you can send an attaché to somewhere like Spain where the civil war is pretty much guaranteed to kick off, due to watching them fight you will gain some army XP.
Great advice! If you lend lease them equipment you also get more XP, but it's limited as to which nations can LL at the start of the game
@@hammotimee Thanks, I always do this at the start of the civil war as attaché are pretty cheap for all nations and can earn you quite a lot of XP for getting basic templates especially if you are going down a focus with early civil war, or early war in general.
Really appreciate you doing these videos, im not a new player but more of a returning player and this alongside your tank, plane & ship designer videos are really helping me understand the new mechanics and remember old ones.
@@Jack_Jack05 Yeah agreed, especially as democratic nations the attaches are super helpful!
Hey thanks so much! I'm glad they're helpful, if you have any requests let me know!
There is a mistake here. Breaking through and defense are not oppositions. The are actually the same. They are the shield that protects your units. The defense avoid damages when defending, but breaking through protects your attacking units from receiving damage from soft or hard damages from the enemy defense force.
Yeah that's my bad, I corrected it in anothet comment 😅
This helped alot but how much do you train?
I'm happy to help! You want to train your units until they're at level 3 veterancy!
sorry but i meant like how much you make as in the train button next to the edit button@@hammotimee
@@the_dragonet3555 OHHHHHHHH hahahahhah depends on how much equipment you have, try to only train troops if you have the equipment and manpower
thanks :)
how did you add artillery behind the inf? 4:20
It's changed now where you have to add it on its own line sadly
What is the difference between making a division wide and making a division deep? Like at 12:00 the mountaineers are 3 3 2 3 when they could have been 4 4 3. Is there a reason its designed like that? how does it affect stats and which is better?
Literally nothing :)
And what happend if I put some all division with battle widht around 80 in one province have combat width 75. It make my defense more weak or hard to attack another province?
You'll suffer a slight penalty but tbh only 5 over is not worth worrying about
@@hammotimee ok then thank man for the information
I don't have any DLC's, does this still affect?
Nope! This was made as a starter point for you to build off, the DLCs only enhance this, not rely on it 😊
Why do u keep the arty so close to the combat section when building your divisions? Wouldn’t it be better if you kept them in the back?
It doesn't matter at all about the placement ☺️
@@hammotimee thanks for the reply
One thing I never see you army template types talking about is how easy it is to fall into the trap of accidentally changing all of a certain template when trying to make a separate one. Oh the frustration of updating a template you thought was separate using scarce army exp and end up updating all of your troops thinking it would only apply to the new template. For example having just enough heavy tank to make a couple of spear point attack groups and end up changing every current tank template...
Hahahaha I've been there done that many times
My best advice is to duplicate the template you want to change, then immediately change the icon and name, then close out to make sure it's duplicated and not just changing your main one
I wish someone could just teach me the game. This is truly a funny game, however, all this complexity makes it hard for me to enjoy the game, even at Recruit difficulty I am failing extremely hard at conquering land. It's like my army does nothing while the enemy AI just seem to always win no matter what.

same i have no idea why i even try to do same as ai but i fail even do thoing same i try medium tank templates but they just useless i dont get this game
@@legobullymaguire1375im starting to think that division designer and division stats is the missing peice for me understanding how to succeed at this game.
Last night I was playing a game and it took me forever to conquer Poland but I was doing it wrong and had like 10+ divisions trying to all attack the same tile together.
This video showed me that doesn't work because the combat width in a title isn't enough to have all those units fighting together so it's mostly just useless.
It seems for combat it's important to have high attack values but low combat widths so they can all fight together to overcome the enemy.
When I try to swap troops in the infantry section of my division designer, only mountain infantry is displayed, and no cannons.
They've slightly changed it recently how you make divisons, add the artillery in a new column
What if your division hade 0 hard attack?
Could it damage a tank division?
Only the "soft" component! So the motorised

Thank you this thought me a ton of stuff and maybe I won't get destroyed by small countrys as Germany
You're welcome! Best of luck!
Great vid, but didn't Feedbackgaming prove that the best garrison template is just one cavalry?
I thought so too, as you want raw suppression for the cheapest so if you make a big one the game automatically splits it down to optimal size
yes but if you want to save support equipment you can use higher widths
Feedback is a bad yt channel in my opinion, most of kids vids are incredibly biased to make the most whacky things seem true and/or borderline clickbait. His recent video outlining the “last nsb exploit” which apparently broke the game did nothing to me in practice, and I tried the method he used 5 times lol
David is sometimes talking so much trash
Thank you! So he has a great video on the supression mechanic, if you don't add MP, a single cav in a division works the same as a 20w, BUT if you add MPs, a 20w actually uses less support equipment overall than if you had a 2w with MP. Bit of a janky mechanic, and given I make these guides for newbies, best to keep it simple!
Can you make Templates for small Country

The division designer. The mechanic that caused me to write off HOI4 as an overrated slog, combined with the way equipment works Let’s see if a tutorial that goes in depth will change my mind.
Edit: it did not. As soon as they started talking about “specialized divisions” I gave up. I don’t want to have a million different hyper specific situations covered, just let me have, like, three or four types of divisions that boil down to being good at attack or being good at defense. I’m specifically confused about what the point of “reserves” are. What’s the point of having units built if they’re just sitting around doing NOTHING?
You can absolutely just have a few different types of divisions and still do well! For example having a defensive infantry and an attacking infantry is the minimum of what you need. And then you can specialise as you see fit from there, but you certainly don't have to!
And the point of having reserves is if you have guns but no support equipment, or holding them back in case of a breakthrough or naval invasion so they can quickly respond 😊
@@hammotimee huh, really? I guess in most of the videos etc I’ve seen I’m used to people saying to have all these different types of divisions because otherwise I just, die? I guess I’m wrong. I’m still very confused on what the point of reserves are though. Why would I not want to have my troops committed to a something? Otherwise my brain is just seeing them sitting around doing nothing and immediately wanting to put them to use. Also, why would I need to have a separate tank division from my attack and defense divisions? Couldn’t I just put some tanks in those?
@@craftsmenMC Hahhaha no you won't die. It's just a case of what's optimal. You can use one division for every single purpose, but it won't excel at all of them. So specialising your divisions a bit is a good way to get more performance out of them, but it's not make or break.
Most of the time you wouldn't really need divisions sitting around doing NOTHING, I think what you might be meaning is the port defence divisions? In which case they might look like they're doing nothing, but if you get naval invaded, defending your ports in very important
And you can put tanks in your normal infantry, that's what would make them space marines, however doing so is really expensive for the most part and you need a lot of equipment to supply your whole army with tanks, vs 6 or so dedicated tank divisions, which have better stats overall so those tanks are more effective
Hope this helps!
@@hammotimee huh, this actually makes me feel a lot better about the division planner, despite my other issue with it. This does help a lot, thanks a ton! Keep making good stuff, and have a great rest of your day!
