------------------------About Me------------------------
My name is Hammo and I stream on Twitch! I play a variety of "map games" and strategy games, but my favourite game by far is Hearts of Iron IV.
I love this game and it's complexity, strategy and historical focus, but these are also reasons people can find it hard to get into Hoi4. The endless spreadsheets, statistics, buffs and debuffs can be overwhelming without someone to show you the ropes, which is where this channel comes in!
I will be creating and posting beginners guides, tutorials, walkthroughs, tips and tricks videos, just about everything I can to get you playing and enjoying Hearts of Iron IV as much as I do!

Side note on planning. If the enemy is entrenched, planning can help you break them easier but if the enemy is routing or moving around units, just smash through, don't let them entrench. This is useful for smashing through entrenched rivers or mountains, lure the enemy out by giving up territory and then smashing through and continue pushing while they are de-orged and have no entrenchment. Works on the Maginot as well.
Top tier strategy
Mongol players be like:
Pretend to run away, then heel turn and kick them in the nuts.
Sounds solid and devious. I like it.
Attacking the maginot is dumb minus pinning them down just long enough for your armor to spearhead to Paris
@@CubeInspector no.. let them into your territory, and then push them back. Without entrenchment n org the maginot is borderline useless. Its not optimal but we are fighting AI so who cares. If you wanted to you could punch straight through the maginot even without cheesing
I remember the first time I played a historical Germany, I completely failed Barbarossa because I was only using battle planning instead of Air and Tanks, which are both essential to killing the Soviets.
We've all been there brother 😁
It's ok my first time I invaded everything in like 1938 and left my border with France wide open

That's great! :D

There is a tutorial and when I first played (a few months ago) it helped a bit but most of the skills I have learned are more or less by just looking through the game, figuring out stuff, and then using it
The tutorial is pretty basic, and trial and error is how I learnt most of what I know!
You can setup one division as training division. Set one division to cover one tile, set it to training mode. Then set every unit in the training to go automatically to that division. Then you just basically from time to time visit that unit and pick up fully trained units.
You can, a lot more micro intensive than I would argue is necessary, but while at war for a long period it's a great way to get new units up to speed!
Can confirm I would make all of these mistakes if i ever played 😢
Lucky I've got guides here to help 😁
Excellent vid all round and the actionable tips were super helpful . Defo worth a sub, thnky
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it!
The number one concern is planning your industry.
What factories to build and when. What equipment to build. Do we wait another four months or two years to start building tanks or does that have to happen now?
There are constant economic tradeoffs being made.
The focus tree, deciding when to start a war, dealing with war support, and all the production stuff is all the "strategic level" planning.
The moving around of division sized units in operational level.
A good solid strategic base will make up for lots of errors on moving your units around.
"Smooth and steady" is how I'd describe the best strategy here.
Decide what you want to build then put factories on that and keep them there for sustained periods.
Mastering the "strategic level" takes long term planning, math, and trial and error (the more math and planning the less trial and error).
One thing I would add though is the need to be able to react to different situations and be fluid with how you play the game and approach it 😊
@@hammotimee
On the operational level? Yes.
On the strategic level? No.
Strategic level planning requires long term methodical approach to be effective. In the game, the META for all things strategic level is long term planning. That takes a long time to master and get what you need to fight a war effectively.
On the operational level you can react quite fast. If you do a wrong move many of your divisions can easily be encircled or you can lose the battleship you just spent three years building. You can burn through a year or a few years of production in a matter of a couple months making the wrong moves. Or you can burn through years' worth of production of your enemy.
Hoi4 is a mix of flexible short to medium time handling of operations and methodical long term strategic planning. Many new players have no idea how to maximize the strategic side of the game.
When it takes a couple years to research something and a year or so to build up production efficiency for it and to get a fair number built you can't react quickly.
Very good video. Hoi4 comunnity need more content like this
Thanks so much!!!
Excellent tips and great video 👍👍👍
Glad it was helpful! Thank you!
OMG he said province!!! A Hoi4 player that actually uses the right terminoligy!
Hhahah thanks, I alternate because province still confuses people, tile = province and vice versa
I heard that. Solid move@@hammotimee
Great video, thanks!
Great comment!
I learn a lot from this channel. maybe X Nation Guide next?
I'm glad it helped! I've got some exciting videos in the works over the next few weeks!
Great vid, i knew to make a cav division with MP for garrisons but i had no idea you could change the laws for more manpower or to increase to cav units on the garrison
Yeah it's a neat little trick!
Thanks now I will be better at this game and able to win more battles!
Let's GOOOOOOO
Great video, thanks :)
Glad you liked it!
Another one you forgot that a lot of new players do is dreading to use more oil than you produce. I remember playing as germany and only using infantry because well... I had no oil production.
Hit that trade button babay
i usually make a 1 unit div asap and just have him always training and then send my new units there. works best on bigger nations but thats what i normally do
Good idea! If it works it works, just be mindful that training divisions has a slight attrition effect, so training level 3 divs will slowly cost you equipment
Amazing vid just gained a sub
Thanks so much! I hope I keep earning it 😁
Believe or not, I AM the type of guy who watches tutorials, reads expert advice, and waits until he understands a lot of the "little things" first before even TRYING a game of this scale. I bought it 2 weeks ago at 70% off w/the DLC so the DLC is gonna change things enough as it is...and I plan on micro-ing battles and using the pause button a lot so when I actually try a real game, I won't be having to make excuses like, "Well....I AM using the ITALIAN army....I'll hit France. With the Surrender Monkeys facing me, nobody'll even get HURT!" Or whatever.
When you micro, do you still get the planning bonus from occupying an area or a front?
Sure do! So long as your battle plan is drawn!
Thanks for the vid bro. I hate 400 hours but I just still can’t get the hang of it, can you link some videos you have that I should watch so I can get a lot better? Thanks bro

I have no idea how someone learnt how to play this with no tutorial... Your videos helped immensely
I walked so you could run
In my first game i almost lost to denmark with the complette German starter army they pushed me to near Munich I saved it by sending a tank to kopen hagen
1. Didn’t know there was a planning bonus - thanks!
2. I always just went to aggressive when I was losing because I didn’t understand why I was - another one!
3. I do do this but I always fuck it up - further consultation needed
4. I have no idea what you mean by full strength? Like literally not a clue! Any help here?
5. So should I exercise units till level 3 everytime they get deployed?
6. Okay I definitely try and fail to do this but will definitely use your tips!
7. Another one I try and fail to do. Im not sure when and what to do with resource management and I’m always being told I need to produce more inf equipment so often delay my airforce but will prioritise this now! Thank you!
8. Didnt even know terrain affected different units xD
3. Could be any number of reasons why sorry!
4. As in the divisions strength is at 100% in terms of supply and manpower, green bar on the division
5. Yep! Unless you're at war and need them immediately
Glad to help!
I’m newish to HOI so please correct me. I’ve been using two unit cavalry to garrison with civilian oversight, no MP, and I’ve had no issues with rebellion. Some resource lost but it seemed to be a fair trade for manpower. Is it really needed to have such large divisions and tougher law? Thanks for the great vid, good for people like me
It's a great question! A lot of the time, cav only is fine, you won't have any issues. Occasionally though if you're low on equipment, manpower or in areas that have higher resistance (Poland for example), MP on your cav works great. The size of your garrison division only matters if you have MP on there. It's a bit hard to explain over a comment, but essentially either do 2w cav with no MP, or 20w plus if you do add MP, the reason being for some reason the larger the garrison division, the less support equipment it uses! Hope this helps
I would suggest 4 or usually the stanard 6 unit cav used (if heavily bad prob use 8), and MP can really help, also The automatic for most garrison law is secret police or local. Even if it cost manpower its the basic laws that secure rebels from rising
first failing : playing Australia
Rude frankly 🦘
Still learning the prewar stuff for United States. The little bit of war I have been totally lost

im a strategy guy but for many years ignored hoi 4 being scared of it for being too complex , i play total war games tho but hoi 4 for me was something i thought i would never master.
Guess what, i got it on a sale on steam and learn the game in a week , with cheats and mods yeah but now im playing vanila iron mode and its harsh but i understand the mechanics, once you get it , you like it lol.
Hahaha nice! Glad to be of help!
I actually prefer cheap tanks over horses for occupation. Only exception to this is playing as a nation that has more men than production.
Tanks/armoured cars are optimal, but for new players starting out having to produce equipment for your garrisons adds an extra thing they have to worry about. I am going to make a garrison video going over this though!
@@hammotimee Ah, I see.
How important is air? I recently got into Hoi4 and air and navy seems a bit too complex for me so I usually skip them for tanks and infantry. Is there a guide on your channel that I can find about air?
There is a guide for the airforce generally and one for the designer! Sorry I can't link right now as I'm out haha but air is vital!
Air is easy bro. Just select the planes, right click on your army and then toggle air support missions.
its kinda the most important, u can add it to armies and if ur complexed there is tutorials but like tanks and navy the upgrade/tech helps
I have a couple noob questions i wonder if could be answered? Im playing Egypt in the Kaiserreich and my skill level can be described as "good enough to play the game, but not get much done, and certainly never 'win' ".
Is motorized or mechanized infantry better than regular infantry? Is their only bonus their speed of deployment?
What use is cavalry to me, and are they worth it?
If i have limited mil factories, what is the best use of them?
What are the differences between stats like "hard attack", "soft attack", "entrenchment" and "breakthrough"?
And how do i create rockets for my rocket sites?
Great questions! Although I don't play enough Kaiserreich to know much but this is all for vanilla
Mech always is best, gives more breakthrough, armour and hardness
Cav are good early, until you get to the point where countries get doctrines as cav don't get buffed by pretty much any of the doctinres (see this video: czcams.com/video/ijc8txLGmLY/video.html&ab_channel=HammoTimee )
Guns and arty
Hard attack only affects the % of hardness if a division, and same for soft attack. Infantry = soft, armour = hard // entrenchment adds a defensive bonus, hover over the entrenchment bar for your divs to see how much, and breakthrough is essentially your defence while attacking
Rockets will automatically be created. You use them by assigning to an air zone and using the strat bomber mission!
@@hammotimee thanks so much. This game has a lot to it. I appreciate you taking the time to answer
Are you egyptian?@@alexanderrahl7034
Also making divisions with out good org
Yep! I cover all that in my division design guide 😄
I suppose having watched like, probably 100 or more playthroughs on youtube before finally buying hoi4 helped me quite abit in understanding all the game mechanics, thus am able to avoid all these mistakes since very early... except air, until i figured out accidentally that i can just assign the squadrons to my land forces thus dont need to hassle with constantly changing the arrow directions and airport locations.
hoi4 tutorial is pretty yikes, pretty much only covers land stuff, incompletely; then again, i myself dont have an idea on how to actually make a tutorial on game as complex as hoi4 without making it hours long.
140+ hours in now, and i can pretty confidently manage through everything vanilla - land air sea, supply system and stuff (base game without any dlc, so no espionage and designers sadly).
That's great!! Glad you're enjoying it!
Question when I try to use air most of my planes say that I don’t have coverage so I can’t get my planes to go there how do I fix this
If you can build airports closer to where you need that will help! Otherwise add on fuel tanks to your planes 🙂
@@hammotimee thanks

Yep i've been here before 1 year ago
Lucky I'm here to help!
This video is nice and all, but I think I’m just going to throw my entire army at the maginot all at the same time
Understandable have a great day 🫡
Tried playing the tutorial and not only did it give me the explanations without context and connections to other things, but it would have arrows pointing everywhere with no context making it impossible to understand what I was supposed to do.
Yeah it's not great haha
I hate how most of the time, I can't take advantage of planing bonus. I have to micro, because the plans are usually stupid and unable to understand what I want.
You actually still get the advantage of the planning bonus if you micro your units, you just need to draw an attack order but not activate it, I go through it in my micro video!
czcams.com/video/vbDWiSQU3c4/video.html
@@hammotimee The more you know. Does increase the amount of needed micro though, as I'd need to unasign them after they have done their attacks. Thanks regardless.
@@Tommuli_Haudankaivaja I usually leave the frontline order but just bring the edges in so they don't shuffle away from the breakthrough, it's more micro as you said but works for me! Sadly you don't get the planning bonus anymore if you unassign your divisions and micro them ☹️ happy to help!
Tbh I mostly fail at early game
wait planning bonus increases attack
It sure does!
It worked I (totally) win every fight in a game now
Best tesitmonial right here
i do the 1 mistake of the video and, Actually Still Works For me
That's good!
@@hammotimee Maybe Bc i use 9 Infantry 4 artillery 1 AA 1 Anti tank template
3:31 Not to brag, but I do a good job at having enough equipment (except for airplanes, I can never seem to get enough of those). When I was playing Left Opposition Soviet Union one time, I waited to build up equipment to make counteroffensives, and it was worth it. I beat the Axis HARD, with only two nearly full army groups, even though Moscow had fallen and the Nationalist Spanish divisions were beastly in strength. Funnily enough, because I waited patiently, and also because the Baltics were less defended, I pushed there and ended up controlling most of Germany before recapturing Moscow, and encircled almost the ENTIRE Axis invasion force. That is literally not an exaggeration.
That's great gameplay!
I dont know how to play I just bought that game and its a friking hell to learn that

Bruhh, I didn't know the first one, that's why I was defeated by Poland in my first game as germany😭 lol.
Oooft glad to help!
How does this vid not have that many views 💀
It's getting there!
How were you able to recruit that many divisions as Australia??
Just over time managed to get enough manpower! Plus they're only around 20w, they're not massive
Man just put some anti-air in your division you're good to go you don't need air 🤣😂
That used to be the case, but not since no step back 🔙
I keep on having problems with production..I have enough Military factories (34/34) and civilians too and my resources are all green..Yet when I wanna produce something the production line is red and it says that no factories are assigned to it…This happened when I ended a war, My tanks productions stopped..What’s the problem!? And like that I cannot even deploy units! And I need to because I lost some of them…Can somebody help? I know I’m making mistakes
You would have gained military factories through occupied land during the war, but when the war ends and you lose that land, those mils are unassigned from your line. The other thing which could be happening is you've got a heap of damaged factories, check the bottom of your construction queue
Mountaineers are so useful
They're bloody great, I just often have more uses for other special forces
As someone who has only 150+ hours of HoI4 I can confirm I don't know where I am sending my divisions, I just send them and pray they don't get encircled by United States 👍
My friend on the other hand.. will get his berlin rushed by luxemburg, we are that dumb
Hahaha that's the Hoi4 experience

we conquered europe and africa
and middle east as well
but then America and Union of Soviet Republics is after us now, plus I lost my troops in a war with US, we are so dead lol

he is playing as germany
@@hammotimee I'll join your discord
@@CorruptedDioSan yeah join us! People are always happy to help :)
I think more important than always deploying an air force is beimg realistic about it. As Chechoslovakia you'll never be able to get air superiority over Germany, so any factories on planes go to waste. If you have 1/10 of your enemies planes, your airforce won't do anything
Yes but also no. Against Majors you can't ignore your airforce unless you're really small, but a good, advanced fighter design will shred the AI design regardless of how many they have, and over time with enough trading you'll come out on top
@@hammotimee yeah, maybe, but if you do not have the DLC that allows for fighter design, I think your factories and reseach as a minor nation is better spend at your army
I just make an army that’s always training and send all new forces there same for ships
Not a bad way to do it!
My main mistake is pulling up the console command
No way this is not a mistake at all!
No idea how to make a battle plan and you dont show how. What button. Where, how.

@@eli-mi3mh if you're talking a historical game, you just need to hold on until the US/Barb starts, because then the Germans will have their planes split on two fronts and when the US come along that will help massively
