Malaysia similarity design flag with USA sometime got us in troubles. When Malaysian medical & relief volunteers were in Iraq they were attacked by locals that mistaken our flag as American. One of them was shot in the butt, luckily no casualty.
Edit: actually there were 2 casualties from the attack. A Syrian driver & a local Iraqi volunteer were killed. 2 Malaysian was injured, one was shot in the hip (not butt). She is Dr Jemilah Mahmood, the brave woman who is the leader of the volunteer group.

actually, the flag of the East Indian Company is said to have been inspired by the flag of the Majapahit empire, located at modern day indonesia (and malaysia), since the E.I.C. traded mostly there.
Yeah, also something relate to the Johor-Riau Sultanate flag which base from Malacca Sultanate flag which also had some thing to do with Aceh Sultanate(or Perlak or Samudera Pasai) which also also has some thing to do with the Ottoman Empire flag.

Arguably, this is one of the best videos on flags. I liked his way of presentation, content and that soothing voice.
In Malaysia, one time in school in my Bahasa class, my teacher said to draw the Malaysian flag and it was literally the hardest thing to draw the star and the moon. The star literally looked like a octagon.

The theme of the competition is definitely painting the Malaysian flag. But the hardest part was drawing the star from the flag. If I draw the star, the shape is not like a star anymore. Fun fact British East India Company flag came from Majapahit Empire( it's one of influential trading flag at that time in South east asia), you can see the evolution of the flag remain white and red. While Malaysia and US take white red stripe (like BEI company), indonesia on the other hand take one line of white and red (also Majapahit Empire flag)

As a Trinbagonian (from Trinidad and Tobago) I'd heard it said that our flag is quite unique, but this is the first time I can actually deduce it 🇹🇹 It's not the most unique, likely (colour-wise, and field dimensions are standard AFAIK) but as with every flag it's the combination, reasons and purpose of it that matter. Great video.

@@h3nder Turks used it before Islam. On the Ottoman times, because Ottomans were representing most of the muslims, Crescent became symbol of Islam. But actually symbolism in Islam is not allowed.

The Philippine flag was influenced from the other countries flag who were first revolted against Spain. The best example of this was the Cuba. When our heroes heard the news about Cuba had revolted against Spain, they grabbed the opportunity to revolt. they made a flag that looks closer to Cuba and other countries colonized by Spain.
Both Cuba and Panama from what I've read actually designed their flags partially to honor the US, who they genuinely considered their liberators from Spanish or Colombian rule. Truly fascinating history.
actually the east india company flag is based on the "Majapahit" empire flag with the union jack as the ensign where the company first started trading. So the flag is more local to Malaysia than the US.
I like Malaysia more not only bc it is my nation but sometimes our flags has meaning
