    Here's what's up with sharptails bro. You need to be hunting draws, creeks, tree belts and buffalo berry bushes. That flat short grass will have a few but you'll walk your legs off finding one and he'll flush 80 yds away. I finally went to a 3 1/2 #5 turkey load to scratch down my first one. After that I learned to look for draws and trees and berry patches. Use plenty of firepower. 3 inch #4 is about right. They aren't tough but they're hard to get close to. Early season is best. They get wild after that.

    Midday grouse are, in my opinion, the hardest upland bird to hunt. In the morning and evenings, they'll come to water and gravel, but after that, they fly out into the middle of the prairie, which is really the middle of the middle of nowhere. Later in the season, they get bunched up and the snow forces them into more manageable locations, but then there's 50 pairs of eyes ready to bounce at the first sign of danger.
    But a guy doesn't have to see a thing to enjoy western SD with the old man. Great times and memories.

    My dad and I went out yesterday 250 miles directly north of you. We got 4 sharptails and 2 partridge. My tips: they like bullberry(buffaloberry) bushes, if you see one almost guaranteed there is more, and there always seems to be one left if you kick up a group.

      @@MinnDakOutdoors all that being said I usually only specifically hunt for them the week before ND pheasant opener to get my dogs out. We don't have a ton around the Dickinson area. It seems like around here if you find a group you should probably put a chase on them. If I flush a group I don't expect to see anymore in that field. When you get into the grasslands and Eastern MT it might be a different story. People seem to be flocking there to shoot grouse this year.

    I just got back from elk camp and I got 5 blue grouse up there. I was shooting cheap 2 3/4in #8 same gun as you with a full choke. I just road hunt them I always aim for the head but these cheap loads had much to desire. Still killed up to 20-25yards but once they started flying I couldn’t get them down. Think I might use my turkey choke next time or some better shells

    Tell ya right now you can find better numbers than that just between Valley City and Devils Lake. In SD you want to stay up near the border if west river. Ive seen so many NW river SD that they sit on the fencelines and powerlines like doves. But yes, they are almost always quite spooky and hard to hit. If your camping on water you can even put up your spinner and they will come to that.

  • @fryefamilyadventures
    @fryefamilyadventures Před 2 lety +3

    For some reason I thought they would be fast flyers like ruffed grouse. Best shells to use for grouse hunting are 6 shot or 7 shot. That's all I use and the only loads I have seen anybody else use for grouse. You gotta do it again with Sam so you can at least have someone film and take along some fishing tackle and poles. I was out in the Wall Drug area as a kid and it's an awesome place to visit. It's the South Dakota version of the Wisconsin Dells but without the water parks and mini golf courses. You are honestly the first person I have seen do any kind of grouse hunting. If you ever do a ruffed grouse hunt, take a lot of shells and plenty changes of underwear. Those things are loud when they take off and they are fast.

BTW - my very first trip to Ft Pierre National Grassland last Saturday was successful. I came home with 3 prairie chickens! I'll be my first 2022 episode. More to come.

    @ejwennberg Před 2 lety +3

    I just got back home from grouse hunting. I saw a few, got 1. We have the ruffed grouse here north of Duluth, MN. They mostly stick to trails in the woods where there's lots of cover so it's a little trickier to get a shot off unless it's one of the dumb ones that just stand still in the middle of the trail and wait to be shot.

  • @dansolberg2684
    @dansolberg2684 Před 2 lety +1
