- You can unleash beast mode with the EOS R and many newer cameras with the simple addition of an Atomos recorder. I'm using the Atomos Shogun Inferno, but many might opt for the Atomos Ninja V for it's portability.

Great video btw. Appreciate the detail and value 👍🏼
I appreciate the cameo! 👍
Thank you for making the video. You saved me lots of time. Thank you thank you
Happy to help! 👍
Great info...thanks, dude!
You got it! Happy to help.
Thanks man, that was super useful 👍🙏👊
Happy to help!
Awesome video!
Thanks Devon! 👍
Very cool and informative video.
Thanks! 👍
Thanks!!
You got it!
Informative 👍🏻
Thanks!
I'm all about the Atomos recorders... Seriously bumps the abilities of a bunch of Cameras!
#beastmode 😆
Thank you for the video, I have a question I have the time code enabled do you have to have a card in the eos r for the monitor recording feature to work
Awesome Video,
Hopefully you can help with these 2 Questions and Thank You in advance if you can..
How do I remove the camera settings and everything on the EOS R Screen to avoid baking that to the Ninja V ?
I hear everyone talking about recording to 4K…
Call I shoot 1080 in the EOS R and record to 4K on the Ninja V??? Or that defeating the purpose??
Thanks for the awesome video. Have one question. How do you use Peak design hand strap with long qr plate?
I drilled a small hole in the back of the plate to put one of the peak design links through. Not too hard to do.
Thanks for sharing. Did you use any luts to color the 10bit videos? I'm looking for a good lut to use for nature. Hiking trails and Jeep trails if you know of any?
I'm not really a LUT person so no. It's something I actually just started looking into. I'm still old school and edit each clip individually.🤷♂️
What camera do you want to pair this with?
And do you want the Ninja V or the Shogun Inferno? 😆
I want to pair the Atomos Ninja V with a Nikon d3100 (a 1080p HDR, 10yr old camera) wht do you think?
I’m an Apple user.., 2015 MacBook Pro, I use Final Cut Pro and I wanna use this camera (along with my iPhone vlogging setup) for CZcams and Instagram... will I be able to supercharge my camera recording externally with this Atomos Ninja V...?
Awesome video! Thx for all the tips, one question, is the benefit of ProRes 422 codec for Mac only? Or PC as well?
ProRes is designed for Mac, so I don’t think there would be any benefit on a PC. I haven’t tried it so I can’t say for sure.
Yes prores also works well on PC. At least with newer versions of Adobe.
Great video, seriously consider this combo. How big are the 4:2:2 10bit files for a 30 min recording?
It's a pretty great combo! I haven't done any 30 minute recordings yet so I can't say for sure. I'd suggest taking the 1 minute sample sizes I listed in the vid and X it by 30. Should get you pretty close.👍
@@rynfilms 1 min was about 6 gigs. I have a 1 TB card and its more than enough.
I tried slamming the Ninja V on my Canon 6D Mark ii and I can’t get around the ninja recording everything the camera outputs like you said - unless I use manual focus I can’t get those stupid white boarders to go away.. Ordering the eos r tomorrow though - but would have been nice if I could get around the issue with the 6D2 because it would enable me to have a two camera setup for my tutorials.. 🤷🏼♂️
I've never used the 6DII, is there a menu option to tell it what to output through the HDMI? I believe this is what I have to do in the 5D4 to get a clean output.
RYN photography theres not no - so all that setup really does is give a better codec and i Can utilize the focus peaking mode and all the other good stuff the atomos Ninja has to offer.. EOS R arrived today in the mail.. so this video helped me either Way.. Thanks for replying! 🙋🏼♂️
Thanks man! Been waiting for someone to pair the R with atomos. Is there much benefit out in 1080 beyond longer recording time - ie do you gain 422 instead of 420? Keep up the great work!
I don’t think you gain 422, but you go gain the ability to record in Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHQ. Both of which play back on my older Mac way better then the H.264 internal recording. That alone is a huge plus.
RYN photography looking forward to testing it out. Thanks again dude!
You got it!
I love the informative videos ryn but can you please keep a consistent framing, I find the micro jumps really distracting, 0:41 - 0:44, 0:49 ,4:15 - 4:24, I just feel like that camera needs to be locked of in manul or the zoom consistent, It the same with other videos. but your work is still amazing so thanks for posting content that you do.
Thanks Rubeun, mostly it’s just jump cuts for editing. Always trying to improve. Thanks for the input!
Can you share or link to the actual cable you're using to connect the R to the Atomos? I'm rethinking why I needed the ninja V after seeing this. BTW the eos R has built in timelapse! Thanks for being so thorough answering comments!
Hey Jimmy! Thanks for asking. In the video I'm using this, amzn.to/2AABDVy My current setup, I'm using the Atomos cable ( bhpho.to/3eaRgCs ) and the Ninja V. It's such a great setup!
Can you upscale 1080 from, say, 5d mk4 to 4k in the Atomos while you are shooting? Thanks for the video!
You can't. the 5D4 only outputs in 1080. You can scale it up in post production, but you're still working with 1080 footage.🤷♂️
Have your pair the Zhiyun crane 3 lab and the Shogun inferno all together and if so what’s your opinion?
I have not used thy combo yet. Still waiting on all the parts to rig it all up on my Ronin S. 👍
Can we also make FHD 10 bit 4.2.2 ??
I never shoot 4k. I currently have a 1dx ii I know files will be huge if I did 4k... I wish the 1dxii had 10 bit and wasn't so heavy. So I am debating going to this setup, but looks like it will only do 10bit on 4k BUT not 10 bit at 1080? Are 4k files a lot smaller on the eos r than 1dx ii? Thanks!
Correct, You can only shoot 10bit while shooting 4K with this setup. I can't say for sure about the file sizes since I have never used the 1DX2. Recording to the Atomos with ProRes LT 4K 10bit from the EOS R, a 1 minute file averages around 2GB. The quality is outstanding though, Highly recommended!
How do I record the video screen settings on the atomos with EOS R? Meaning the one thing you warned about in your video, but I would like to record iso, shutter speed etc on the video?
Just cycle through the info button on the R until you see the settings on the Atomos. 👍
RYN photography - Oh geez - how easy - tried everything but that LOL - Thank You!
Is there a way to dual record externally with this monitor? It would help me get around the lack of dual card slots on the R.
I haven't done it for a while, but I believe you can record in camera and external if you are NOT filming in 10bit c-log. I use Samsung SSD's in the Atomos and have found them to be pretty reliable. I haven't lost anything yet.
@@rynfilms ok cool, if it can do it for video it can probably do it for photos too. I'd likely just plug in an SSD to the USB-C port in situations where I must have a backup like a wedding or important event.
Great video. I just ordered it. But I was a bit confused about the 1080 P output. So you’re telling me that if you record in 1080 it will show all the information unless you hit the info button and remove it? But why wouldn’t do that if filming in 4K?
The R outputs a different signal in 4K and knows to turn off all the screen info.
@@rynfilms now they I have it, its easy to work with. Great investment.
Do you still have touch screen functionality on the EOS R when outputting 4K to the external recorder?
Yes, you can still use the touchscreen on the camera.
4:09 where can i get the little thing that hooks up the atomos and its attached to eos r the black 1/4 holder i think? what is it called?
It's basically a mini ball head, some version of this. amzn.to/2Xqq9xT
If you haven't already , check out what smallrig has to offer. You can find the products on Amazon or their website. Hope this helps.
Hi!! from a Photographer perspective, do you think that all the added features like false color, focus peaking would improve photography workflow?? Im using a Canon Eos R, thanks in advance.
I've actually used this for a studio monitor for a product shoot. I don't think you're going to get nearly the value with it if you just use it for photography. There are many other less expensive monitors with those features built in. I didn't find that it sped up my workflow over just using my cheap 7" field monitor, which has no features other than a larger screen.
RYN photography thanks a lot. You are right.
Ugh, I want this so bad!
Scale from 1 to 10 how happy are you with this set up?
I really have no reason not to say 10, but I'll give it an 8 since I haven't used the Atomos paired with any other mirrorless cameras yet to compare. Absolutely no regrets though!
@@rynfilms awesome, thanks for the input. I'll probably wait for the price to drop on the Ninja V
Hello there RYN Films, Love your content man, I'm looking forward to get my Canon EOS , and I have a question, it's possible to output a better 1080p quality from the EOS R using the ATOMOS RECORDER?????
Thanks!
No, the 1080 recording will be the same in camera as it is in the Ninja. The only difference is you'll be recording in ProRes with the Ninja or H.264 in camera.
@@rynfilms thanks for the reply man, got it
Was wondering do u happen to know how I would get to use my eos record button to control the record on my Ninja V, cos I tried what u said in this video but somehow it doesn’t seem to do anythg when I press record on my Camera, pls help, anyone experiencing this too on ninja V
I haven't used it with the Ninja yet, looking to get one soon and that will be one of the first things I figure out. Is there any kind of timecode sync setting on the Ninja? That's where I would start. If not, I'm sure there is someone out there that has this figured out by now.
Fortunately during tht period I managed to figure it out but thanks so much for the reply , really useful info 😊
4k only in crop mode 1.7x on external, right?
That's correct. 👍
Thanks for the vid. Can you tell me if this works with the EOS RP in the same way? Also, atomos cannot increase the frame rate that is default in the camera? For example, you can't record 120fps 1080p on a canon regardless of the atomos product?
The frame rate statement is correct, Atomos can’t change the frame rate. Would be cool if it could!
I didn’t hook it up to the RP when I had it, but it will not do a 10bit output from the RP. Plus no c-log and if it’s like the 5D Mk4 you will only be able to record in 1080. You’re only advantage would be the ability to record in ProRes. But at that point you could just transcode after shooting internally.
Thanks for checking it out!
@@rynfilms That all makes sense. Thanks
Does the Ninja v or any atomos recorder supply phantom power to mics connected directly to it?
I don't think so, It's not an option I've seen or tried to use.
Hi do u know why I cant shoot 1080 10bit on Ninjia ? it bothers me a lot thanks
Hi Arlen, the simple answer is that the R does not output 10bit at 1080. Perhaps Canon will give a firmware update that will change this but I would guess it's not a priority for them.
Does Magic Lantern have a Mk IV version that will allow 4K output?
ooh.. Thats a good question.
Currently no support for the MK IV with Magic Lantern. The MK III does 14 bit raw in 2k continuous but not out of the HDMI just internally. This is one of the reasons why I have been watching a lot of video to see if I am going to switch over to the eos r for video. Great video and great info, thanks.
And I just sold my MK3!
I always forget about Magic Lantern. I hear great things about it though. 👍
Is there anyway that the info cannot be baked In when recording with the atomos. My eyes are not that good and the large info settings and menus are better to see on the external recorder. I just don’t want all that stuff in my final output.....
The only way is to turn off the info display output. If it shows up on the Atomos, It'll record to the Atomos. At this point, there is no way to show the data to the recorder but not record it.
I've been looking into adding a monitor to my Eos R, but to save money would it also work to record to a Samsung T5 SSD ( so that I can record in 10 bit) and buy a cheaper monitor like the Andycine A6 Plus??
As far as I know you're not able to record video (or photos) over the USB C port. The R doesn't recognize the T5 as a memory card. It outputs the 10 bit data over the HDMI port so you'll need something that records over HDMI. It's a good idea, but I don't think it's going to work on the R.
RYN photography Thanks so much for the reply! Really Appreciate the info , looks like I’ll be ordering the atomos👍🏼
Hi - is Clog 1080 easy to grade from the R.
I find it to grade pretty easily. 👍
Hey! Nice video!! So you can record to the EOS R and the Atomos at the same time?
You can record to both at the same time, but only when shooting in 8bit. When you change to 10bit, the camera knows to only record to the external recorder.
RYN photography great to know! Thank you
You got it!
how to set both display preview in canon R
If I remember correctly, you can only do that in video mode.
This camera work with waveform or is the same like canon 5D mk IV?
I'm not sure I understand what you're asking..
Hey man super appreciate this, been looking ALL OVER THE INTERNET for someone to go into this level of detail specific to the EOS R. I'm not 100% clear on a few things and just wanted to ask to make sure I understood (thank you for being so thorough). 1) I want to be able to use the EOS R screen normally while recording, such as touch autofocus, monitoring other info, but when doing that can you send a clean HDMI signal to the Atomos? 2) For 1080P recording, are you saying you could record 24FPS/60FPS @ 1080 simultaneously, to the internal SD card AND externally to the Atomos drive? If so that could be a big plus for me for specific parts of documentary work (and saving massive amounts of backing up data time). 3) I love that you can work straight off the SSD drive in your edit ... any idea of how much time you can record at 1080P @ 24 or @ 60FPS? This helps me know how much drive space I really need. 4) In the rare case I'd like to do 120 FPS @ 720p, is that even possible with the Atomos? Thanks again bro, this is super helpful.
Also.... sorry! 5) can you tell any difference in quality of the footage using the ProRes codec in 1080 vs using the internal MP4? 6) When you recording in 1080, can you use c-log onto the Atomos? and final question! 7) When viewing on the Atomos, are you viewing C-log, or are you viewing the "View Assist" in camera LUT that the EOS R provides? Or are you using another LUT so you're not staring at a depressing desaturated screen?
Hey JL, Let me get back to you on all this. Awesome questions! 👍
RYN photography yeah man thank you!
OK, here we go:
1- You can use the EOS R screen normally BUT only when recording in 10bit. When you switch to 8bit you'll have to change the HDMI display output to camera + monitor to get it to work. Then you'll have full control of the camera from the cameras screen with a clean output.
2- Yes, when recording 1080 either 60 or 24, you can record to both. I don't think you meant 60fps to the Atomos and 24fps to the SD simultaneously, that you can not do.
3- I use a 500GB SSD. It depends on the quality you record at. A few examples:
ProRes HQ I can record 1080 24fps estimated 5.5 hours & 4K 24 aprox 1 hour 20 min
ProRes LT 1080 24fps aprox 12 hours & 4K 24 aprox 3 hours
4- No, I haven't been able to do 120fps from the EOS R
5- I haven't spent much time comparing internal and external quality. I was more sold on the playback of ProRes on my computer.
6- It does record in Clog.
7- If you have view assist on, you don't see it on the Atomos. You can load LUTs to the Atomos if you prefer. I usually have the Atomos monitor mode set to REC 709.
I hope this helps. let me know if you need clarification on anything.
RYN photography I cant say how much I appreciate the time and energy to respond! Seriously bro, thank you and what I love about the CZcams community when it goes “right”. I’ll think through and see if I have any additional clarifications but will keep it limited next time LOL
Great video. Can it record the 120 fps 720p from EOS R on the Atomos?
Unfortunately no, It'll only do 4k 24 or 4k30.
@@rynfilms Eum, no that's not correct. I'm pretty sure it records 60 fps 1080p for example. Anyway I got hold of Atomos and they said that the EOS R switches off the HDMI output when switching it to HFR (120 fps), though I haven't been able to verify it on the latest firmware.
Budget wise I am looking at the RP, will it work with Ninja?
It will work, but I'm not sure if you'll get the 4K 10bit output. You may be limited to 1080.
will this help with the cannon eos rp for video recording ?
Off the top of my head, I'm not sure. Although it is always nice to have a larger screen to look at.
Must be in c-log to record 10 bit, 422?
Yes, you have to have C-Log on to output 10bit 422
Can we shoot 1080P 10bit 4.2.2 C-log with Atmos Ninja V?
Cz I need minimum of 60fps for my client work.
Nope, It only records 10 bit in 4k
One thing I need to know, do I get more than 30mns recording time with the atomos ?
Yes, the one thing you need to know if that you have to turn off the Auto Off feature on your camera and press record on the Atomos. If you start the recording from your camera, the camera will stop the recording at 30 minutes.
Awesome! Thank you RYN films I’m looking forward to having one... one day
Awesome vid thank you. Quick question please! at 2:30 you talked about 1080p on the Ninja? I thought it only records on the 4k output by the EOS R? Is it possible to record without the 4K crop then? I just spent $3,000 on a RF 50mm 1.2, and $1,000 on an Atomos Ninja V, and i have just been devastated with the fact that i cant output 1080p on HDMI! Please tell me there's a way around the crop without having to spend another $3,000 on a wider lens because of Canons stupid stupid STUPID purposeful software limitation! Thankyou again for the great vid.. I'm just angry at Canon after investing thousands, only to hit this major issue as a professional.
Hey have you heard of anything regarding this matter? I also don’t want to invest extra money on wide angle lenses
@@hugocalvo8287 ive been using both eos R and eos R6 with the ninja V, and you can film 1080p from the eos R, it just comes across as 8bit unfortunately. 10bit only on when you use 4k, and then the crop. I have to say however that the 4k quality is outstanding and very crisp with excellent color depth. Still very handy when doing shots not needing full lens with such as a zoom on wedding ceremony
hi , is this canon eos r can used to shoot movie cinema ? with pro res 422 4k
While attached to an Atomos recorder, you can shoot 4K 10bit ProRes 422.
Does this only work with this atomos or can I external output to a surface pro 7
I don't know about the surface pro 7, never used one. My guess is no.
Dang it. I really wanted 10 bit C-Log at 1080p
same here - that would be very useful.
Canon has been milking us for centuries
we can't C-log 1080p on 25/30 or 50/60 FPS??
me too.. nobody out here is willing to make a good 1080p camera. SMH.
hi, i am a wedding cinematographer , i use eos r for most of my wedding projects. what confused me is , is ninja v can improve my video output quality in 8 bit 1080 ? bcoz i dont shoot 4 k.
You can shoot in 4k then downgrade to 1080, that will give you a bit more room to work with and the ability to zoom into 200% without loosing quality.
Thanks for the info man. I for some reason thought that the pairing of the EOS R and the Ninja V gave you the ability to film in RAW?
Also, do the pairing allow you to get past the 29 min recording limit?
No on the RAW. It just allows you to record in ProRes, but not ProResRAW, I tried. And yes, there is no 29 minute limit when recording on the Atomos. You'll only be limited by batteries or SSD space.
RYN photography thanks man. Well it still sounds like a why investment.
Thanks for your good work!!
😀🕺🏻🎥🏖🇦🇺
120fps would be nice.. Gh5 could 240fps... or 60p 10 bit would be nice with dualpixel af ... :(
Hopefully in the next go around for Canon we will have that ability. I can say that it does 4K 120 and 1080 240 beautifully from the Sony FS5. 🎥
Will it support to canon 1300d ?
No idea, sorry.
1080 24 will be only 8 bit?
yes, the only way to do 10 bit is in 4k.
I bought the EOS-R to film in 4k to an external Atomos Recorder. I do not want to shoot in Canon LOG. Does this mean that if I do not enable Canon LOG 10 BIT that I am shooting in 4k 8bit 4.2.2 to my Recorder? I wanted the R for the 10 bit color but I do not want to shoot it in LOG. I was hoping to shoot it in standard picture profiles. Please let me know!! Your reply will make my decision on either keeping it or sending it back.
It will be in 8 bit if you don’t enable c-log. Are you able to bake in a LUT with the Atomos? That’s something I haven’t tried yet, but I think you may be able to do it. That could be a work around if you’re looking for a faster workflow.
So the only way to record 10 bit is 1080p
No, the way to shoot 10 bit is in 4K external to the Atomos. All 1080 recordings will be 8 bit.
@@rynfilms well in that case better to go with a BMPCC 4K with a speedbooster. Raw internal and less crop
Beats mode, you joking true?
Would you rather call it wimp mode? 😂
so no 4k 60fps?
Not with the EOS R. I think other cameras (Sony, Lumix, possible Nikon) can do 4K 60 output.
@@rynfilms that is so disappointing canon. You would think there would be a camera in their line with that capability.
