The BMPCC is not a typical outdoor-camera for sure. If you only have Canon lenses, I would take the EOS. For these kind of trips I personally would take a mft camera with me (GH5, GH5s), maybe without monitor.
I'm looking hard at the EOS R. One thing you left out was the weather proofing benefits of Canon. Also, you can attach an RF mount ND solution that basically gives you built in ND filters. But... it really isn't a big deal to carry extra batteries for the BM6K. People make way to big of a deal out of it. I've been shooting on the original BMPCC for years. I just carry extra batteries and when I'm not actively shooting, I turn the camera off. The "big rig" isn't the solution. The power button is the solution. I'm also struggling with the red to orange shift with the EOS R. Thanks for the review!
There are so many factors that go into figguring out what is the right camera, It's hard to get them all into my decision. Weather sealing is something I thought about after making this video. I would love to go with the BM6K for this, but the problem is the amount of time I'll be without a reliable source to charge, and I don't have that many Canon batteries. The trip has been postponed, so I have plenty of time to figure it out.
RYN films checkout the 70WH top handle for the Black Magic rig. It’s for any camera but it gets about 3 1/2 hours for the black magic. That could be your solution. It’s like $300 and has D tap, 12v, everything literally
Great stuff to consider! I'm always looking to go as lean as possible while maximizing quality so this is an ongoing challenge for me with traveling and shooting short-docs. For me to keep weight and BULK down on my BMPCC4K I avoid v-mount's entirely -- I use a dummy battery connected to a Sony NPF (mounted on a Blind Spot adapter) which lasts me about 2-3 hrs of filming.
Sounds like a nice setup. When I have daily access to power, I don't mind taking more bulk. I'm just thinking to take enough batteries to power the BM for 5 days will not only be heavy, but prohibitively expensive.
RYN films yeah man, at 2-3 npf’s per day that’d be 10-15 total to carry which is a lot of weight. Will it be cold? I filmed in the woods for a few days and had to make sure and keep the batteries warm at night in my sleeping bag so they wouldn’t drain!
Couldnt you use a np-f970 on the ninja and dtap to power the blackmagic, that would lighten that load quite a bit. You could also record on the ninja and get better quality from the bmpcc.
Great, you’re hired! The pay is zero and you’ll have to provide extra batteries. 🤣 Just kidding. I think I’m going to use the BM on an upcoming project where I can recharge daily.
How much IQ you loose by shooting in 8 bit? But anyway I would go with the eos r, with or without the ninja. But one question, why don't you put some Lenses with IS on the eos r? With something like the tamron 15 30mm f2.8 G2 you don't have to loose IQ by using the digital IS and when using it with the ND-Mount you have a perfect videotool.
I'm not sure what IQ is referring to?? I'm shooting 10 bit to the Ninja V. I don't use IS lenses only because I don't currently own and other than the 70-200. Been looking into one though.👍
such bs. dude an npf w/ weipu connector plate and an Npf battery will last about 3hrs on the Blackmagic. you screw it right to the cage and your done! 2 batteries for about $30 you can film all day.
@@rynfilms maybe that was a little harsh or maybe it was true since your video just came out and there is a plethera of videos showing a small battery footprint on the pocket 4k. ok sorry, heres a better one. It was disingenuous of you to stack that camera with such unnecessary weight for a run & gun situation. love your favorite camera, im okay with that, but the rest was slight of hand type nonsense. we tune into you guys for truth. you help us cut through the BS of product pushers!! GH5 would be a good option as well.

@@rynfilms Does sound like the EOS R is your best choice for that kind of shoot.

BMPCC is the winner for when its come to shoot a Film or Music Video with limited budget.
It's pretty great for the price!
Excellent video! I would definitely take the EOS R every time! There’s nothing more grueling than carrying a heavy system all day long!
Agreed!
Fantastic video breaking it all down for us. Very very appreciated.
You'er welcome Emily! 👍

For portability you can power the BMPCC with a small plate and Sony NPF batteries.
That's another option I might be looking into soon. Thanks!
good stuff Ryan! well done. Canon all day. The weight is also significant if you are having to pack it in for long hikes.
I think I'd need a sherpa just for batteries to use the Black magic. 🤣
Have you used the ninja to rec h265 from blackmagic? I’m curious how it works because sometimes I don’t need braw

Excelent video
Thank you!
What handstrap are you using on the R? And how did you manage to fix it next to the tripodplate?
This should answer your question. 👍

@@rynfilms thanks man!
but 6K RAW BRO, as far as post capability I would rather carry the extra weight to get the extra quality. Loved the vid though thanks!

I dont think your monitor is calibrated what you say and what you show is way off haha
🤷♂️I go with most of the worlds monitors are not calibrated.
The Blackmagic looks kinda ridiculous...
It can get out of control! 😃

9 pounds! ugh. Great details on these two and all the data you are going to be consuming... EOS R... sounds like the winner to me...
I know you're Sony, I hope that wasn't too painful to say. 🤣

Did Canon pay you for this review?
I wish! Hopefully someday Canon will be paying me to do these things.
