I attended an in-store meet-n-greet with XTC when they where doing their radio station tour to support Oranges & Lemons. There was a throng of people surrounding Andy Partridge in the middle of the store while Colin and Dave were off in the corner looking amused. I had a little speech worked out about how much I enjoyed Dave's playing and how much it added to the band's sound. But when I made it over to him all I could do was shake his hand and say "gagagagag".

Dave is the best! They were building all of these legendary Gibson’s miles from my home growing up. Have run across a few of the old Gibson luthiers and guitars over the years but they are scattered to all ends of the earth now.

Hello Dave, I think we met late 60's I bought an AC 30 from you at your house in Purton, I still have my 63 Fiesta Red Strat bought from Jeff Kempster, Ive owned it since new, also I have rear 67 335 also from Kempsters in Burgundy Red, and a Hofner Verithin with Bigsby serial number 99. Live now sometimes in Spain, played in many bands around Swindon, last one for over 30yrs on the dance band circuit Smiley Mac, in the 60's we were Stonewall Jackson. Nice playing enjoyed it very much. Cheers Terry

Great sounds. Loved the Les Paul sound and this Master makes any guitar sound like a Special Instrument. (4:30 a very unique sound. Fantastic.:-)) Sure allows some beautiful voicing from the artists essence. Fantastic. (6:11 chills going down my spine.;-) When you want to prove a point, doesn't the darn thing not do what you want to prove your point. God I hate that. :-)) Love hearing how musicians use their guitars. Great gem of a share. Thanks for this 2nd part I was heading there too.:)

hard to tell what the guitar sounds like when you have the greatest guitarist playing it.

Unique sound. I always wonder how SRV, Santana, Jimi etc. they can just play a note and you know it's them on guitar. How is that?

because Les Paul didn't want to put his name on a guitar that had an exposed neck joint that he thought would break, and I'm not sure he liked the design either...

I've never particularly liked three pickup Les Pauls and SGs. They're too cluttered looking for me. Didn't Sister Rosetta Tharpe play one just like Dave's?

  • @MikeGervasi

The SG wasn't called Les Paul cause Les HATED the design.

Right on! I dont know why he hated it, I think something to do with the horns. But he asked for his name to be removed from the model. Then the artistic management wheel spun into action......"Duuuhhhhrrrrr what shall we call it now?.........I know!! Lets call it an S.G for solid guitar!"
