In Metal Gear Solid 4, there's an optional Codec conversation where Colonel Campbell tells Snake about the time he attended an international "ration swap meet" where various military leaders from around the world tried other countries' military rations. According to Campbell, everyone there agreed that the French rations were the best while the US rations were the worst.
He then passive-aggressively tells Rose that her cooking sucks by saying that she could learn a thing or two from the chefs who made the French rations. To top it all off, Rose chimes in that she actually enjoys US military rations 🤣

In my opinion the Brits had the worst then the Americans. The problem with the American ones were they had too much constipating meds in them. It gets legit painful after a week & the actual pooing bit was always horrible if it had been cooking inside you for over a week -like waaaay more painful than you can imagine if u haven’t gone through it. Everyone I know has hemorrhoid issues now and this was 20 years ago. I heard the MREs got worse because they started adding more secret crap to them after ‘06-07 which in my opinion is BS & p*sses me off.

In Iraq we had an MRE Cookbook. It laid out all sorts of ways to combine several different main meals and ingredients. Some turned out really good. We tried one recipe to make a chocolate cake out of several Cocoa and creamer packs with finely crushed crackers, with M&M's mixed with water into a cake type mix then put into an Ammo can and either put on a HMMWV or vehicle engine. Or in our case just set in the sun. It did kinda turn into a cake but was barely edible. LOL Good times.

In 1997 I was in Brazzaville, Congo. And had opportunity to trade MRE's with French and Belgian guys. For some reason the Belgians absolutely loved the old school Omelette with Ham. One of the worst ones Americans could get stuck with... I traded one time for some sort of Belgian MRE that came in a can similar to a canned ham. It had a small bottle of wine and a cigarette. The fish was like large sardines or Kippers and was really good. It had some sort of bread and crackers that tasted like chocolate Graham Crackers. Comes with sweet corn bread. If you feel really daring throw in some hot sauce. I rarely want my food that spicy. Beef taco is really good cheese spread too. Chicken burrito bowl is amazing as well. All with cheese spread and/or hot sauce. The army over does it with pasta. After awhile all pasta starts to taste the same. Spaghetti with meat sauce is a must have if they are to keep any of the pastas around.

Back in the early 2010s I was at a catering collage in the UK. One day we had a recruiter from the MoD come in and try to convince us to sign up. He bought some MRE pouches and gave use a few each and told us to make a 3 course meal for 2 out of them . The quality of food from a British MRE is amazing for what it is and if you have any sort of cooking experience you can make some impressive meals out of a few packs . We even got to use a field kitchen that was set up in the car park

Back in JROTC, some dirtbag who was in charge of handing out MREs during trips was discovered to be hoarding the best MREs for him and his friends; it was not pretty when the Officers and the company found out.

What a douchebag... In all my years in the army, in our armoured crews, one guy opens the box, and just randomly hands out MRE's to the crew. If you don't like what you have, you can trade with someone. The only time we looked for a specific MRE was when it was someone with dietary requirements, either religious, or those no good vegans.... Other than that, you eat what you're given, and those handing them out, don't pick and choose who gets what.

They seem to be getting better...They were called Meals Rejected by Ethiopians (famine) when I was in the USMC in the 80's.....Choices were very slim...almost every meal was CHICKEN ALA KING

I remember the Buffalo Chicken MRE very well! It came in this weird textured pouche, and to me, was WAY too spicy for actual enjoyment. So,I usually traded mains with someone who loved spicy foods and would trade around (if anyone would trade for what the other guy had, for beef stew, Chili Mac (good luck with THAT!), chili with either beef or beans. Add the crackers and cheese (preferably jalapeño cheese, but regular cheddar works just fine) and enjoy.

I see you also own a jacketed M1. Same. Mine's just the Vietnam era jacket made for being able to take additional shrapnel and small caliber rounds.

The trick to MRE's is to eat the cheese first, which creates a plug. The other food sits behind it baking in the oven. You finally give birth, after some pain and tears, to a solid baby bum brick and it snaps so clean ya don't need to wipe.

From a US Army veteran: American MREs aren't for everyone. Most leave much to be desired. I'd rather eat green eggs and ham from field chow than the questionable MREs which are hit or miss.
