  • The main reason the original Charmed remains so popular to today is its focus on the sisters' relationships with one another. Thought it would be interesting to take a look at the dynamics of the Charmed Ones. If you like the vid, pls give it a thumbs up and consider subscribing!

I think the writers forgot that the show was about sisterhood, not just fighting demons after Constance M. Burge left. As the youngest of there sisters who was raised by a single mother, the relationship of the sisters was very relatable to me. The characters were very raw, real, and so were their dynamics. That's what carried the show and made it strong, not the supernatural element. Great analysis!!

Piper, Pheobe and Prue have a sister dynamic that screams they grew up together, Paige, Piper and Pheobe however have a dynamic that really portrays what it's like to discover a sibling as an adult and it's why they feel more equal, it annoys me when some fans say that they stopped acting like siblings when Prue died, when infact they just changed the type of sibling bond they had, if you meet your sibling later in life and as an adult you will have a different sibling dynamic than when you have grown up together, also while half-siblings are 100% your true sibling, it will still be different than if you were full-blooded siblings, cause well,, the family of your half-sibling, from the side of whichever parent you don't share, isn't technically your family it leaves different experiences.

No this made perfect sense. Funnily enough I come from an interesting family where I am the youngest of 7 and have siblings on my mom and dads side who are all my half siblings. You make complete sense to me. I have a half sister that I’ve never met that I’ve always wanted to. My other half sister met her sisters late in life and they’re close and even though they’re not my sister, they treat me just as such. Bringing Paige in was so powerful for me because I discovered my siblings were all half siblings so I went through a crisis (I was only 11) so it really helped me understand that it doesn’t matter if you’re a half or full sibling, you’re still 100% a sister or brother

....and THIS particular element is what is lacking in the reboot. It became witches who happened to be sisters. The focus of the OG Charmed was sisterhood and later on family. It showed us that the greatest magic the Halliwells had was not in their witchcraft but in their bond as a family. Heck, their strongest spell to vanquish the Source of All Evil is basically summoning their whole Family Tree.

As much as I loved Prue, I felt sometimes Phoebe and Piper were so in her shadow they weren't going to develop as well while Prue was there.
I liked that the show didn't just shove a new sister in and have the roles incongruously stay the same.

Now it made sense why Elders said that Charmed needs Paige instead of Prue to fulfil their destiny. I mean Piper and Phoebe too much relied on Prue, while Prue didn't really allow them to learn from mistakes or try now things - she was always the one who profered to do this for them so they couldn't really grow. While with Paige all sisters are equal, are trying to find new solutions and don't just depend on someone else.

strange roles both Prue and Paige had, but essential and universal. Prue HAD to look after her family and shoulder the burden. It really is almost impossible to share that role with the siblings and breathe once in a while. Anyone who grew up with siblings and is the oldest could relate (me.)while w/ Paige, you know... she was an only child and did not grow up with the family. So when she came in the picture, the dynamic change and they all share their burdens. It’s quite interesting

Interesting analysis! I never thought about the evolution of the characters this way. I personally always felt Piper became the lead, central character after Prue's death - a) because she experienced the most character development from grief to stepping up as eldest sister and eventually motherhood and b) since she had the most dominant, active power (after Prue). But I get what you're saying in that there really were episodes after Prue's death that were Paige-focused and Phoebe-focused too. There were moments where 1 sister needed to save the other 2, and it always alternated.

Agreed, loved the sisterhood relationship between the 3. I have to say tho, after season 5 sometimes i felt like i was watching another show, i remember a lot of amazing pre s5-6 episodes like "morality bites", "astral monkey" "Murphy's luck" even in s4 "hell hath no fury". I remember hearing Alyssa Milano in an interview saying that charmed was a show about doing goofy stuff cause that's what we liked, "them getting dressed up as all sorts of crazy beings" and honestly, every now an then when i rewatch the series i don't feel like i'm doing it because it is a goofy show and to turn off my brain, to be honest, the first seasons had very powerful meaning in their episodes and i feel like after season 4 that concept was just totally left behind. Oh well, it is the way it is, it's just sad that this amazing show couldn't keep going on other than in the comics, i would love an animated series or something like that.

Pendragon I think that was precisely the problem: the people that were involved in the show tended to not taking it seriously. It had so much potential for being a deeper story, but writters, producers or even the very actors weren’t able to make good use of it.
In my opinion, they didn’t understand their own show once the creator leaved.

One of the biggest criticisms of Piper’s character is how brash she can be, selfish in pursuit of normalcy, and how she mourns the loss of normalcy too much.
IMO, Piper, to a large extent, was right. Magic took from her constantly- her mother, her parent’s marriage, her sister, her husband, her trust in those she thought she could trust (Gideon, Cole, the Elders, etc), even the magical community turns their back on them in the last season. The sisters all likely had extreme PTSD and adrenal fatigue from living on edge constantly- expecting attacks at any moment. They had to maintain jobs and pay rent all while having two full time jobs. She earned the right to be a bit bitter and angry about it 🤷🏽‍♀️

    @DavidTorres-uu7nf Před 3 lety +3

This is what I feel like the new charmed show lacks. Sometimes when I watch it, it feels like they’re friends and not sisters like the original. Even though some critique the old show saying it was cliche, but at the same time it made sense and was realistic. The oldest was pushed to be the parent as they understood more, the youngest didn’t have much stability and grew up lost and became reckless, and the middle child was in between them and could relate to both making them the bridge. I grew up with a normal childhood and my siblings and I are similar to them. Especially that rocky relationship between the oldest and the youngest. As the oldest I do sometimes judge my youngest sister for her actions and sometimes I do get jealous that she can ignore everyone and do whatever makes her happy. The relationship the original charmed ones have is amazing. Some say that once Prue was gone the writers just put each sister in the other’s role but that’s not true. Piper did become more courageous, but she wasn’t Prue. Everyone called Prue the superwitch, but Piper was actually the strongest in terms of fire power. They called Prue that, because of her strong personality. Sure there was some rockiness with Paige, but it was because she was a stranger and wasn’t ready to have another sister. You have to remember Paige was supposed to replace Prue in the charmed group, so in a way she was replacing Prue. Piper was still grieving while trying to get to know each other. Phoebe did become more responsible, but she was already doing that before Paige came in. In the beginning of the show she was still young while later matured into an adult. She also didn’t become more responsible because now she was the middle child, she became responsible because there was another life she had to protect, an inexperienced one, so she had to step up. Since Phoebe was a little more social and impulsive, of course she accepted Paige faster than Piper. She had to be the rock of the charmed ones for a while, which meant also trying to be the bridge between her sisters. And Paige obviously was going to be a little more independent than the others since she was an only child. Plus she was still finding herself and dealing, so of course she might make a few mistakes. If you skimmed the show, you might think the writers just chose to keep the cliches birthorder personality, but when you watch it there’s so much more. As you said in the video, the dynamics change from one to the other, which is normal in real life. They changed from one being the leader to all working as a team. That’s what I feel is missing in the new charmed. They do a lot with the magic and the messages, but they don’t focus enough on the bond between the sisters. Even though Maggie and Mel grew up together, they don’t have the love-hate relationship siblings have. They don’t dive deep enough into their relationship. They do keep all the good stuff about being siblings, but they don’t show the drama or the fights or anything like that. That’s probably why I like the Abby in the show. She makes the relationships more complex than just exaggerative sisterly love. Well that’s my opinion at least.

Piper and Paige's relationship was in ways more closer than Prue and Phoebe had. I think it was that there was absolute trust between Paige and Piper.
Because of Phoebe's recklessness especially with her relationship with Cole, Prue never could trust her completely and that damaged their bond on some level. It was like if they wouldn't be sisters they probably wouldn't want to have anything to do with one another.

I think the writing in season 5 and season 6 didn't allow this sisterly bond to surface that much all of the time, so it looked more like they are just friends, but it strongly resurfaced at the end of season 6 (after Chris' role turned into being Wyatts little brother since Holly was pregnant for real this time) after it was slightly buried in season 5. It resurfaced in season 5 occasionally, but not as strong as in season 1-4 and 7-8.

One of my biggest gripes with the reboot was it's failure to take advantage of the idea of having all four sisters present in the narrative at once I thought it would have been really interesting to see a Prue-type character and a Paige-type character interact and find their places within a sibling relationship. Honestly I had sort of hoped that that would be the main difference between the original and the reboot.
They could have had the charmed ones have grown up knowing what they were The power of three and then find out they have a half sibling who does have some power and can help them access the power free but only with two of her sibling never with all three. So we end up with the sort of mix and match dynamic that necessitates one of the sisters being left out at all times but at the same time all four are siblings. I thought it could have been really cool.

@@bryanna_renaee I think it comes across as selfish to me because of the writing. They talk about how much they sacrifice but outside of Pru dying (something they only occasionally show to care about afterwards depending on if the writers care that day) they eventually just get to a point in the story where they complain about all they're doing but stop showing them actually doing it. Thus it gives the impression that they're just whining. I think it's something other writers might have been able to adjust, but that's partly the nature of the beast for tv shows. It's rarely all planned out from start to finish, which can create some fantasic storytelling like Breaking Bad, but if the writers aren't careful and write themselves into too many corners or stop caring about the character progression, things can start to feel stilted and fall flat.
I would say early on, even after Pru dying, the girls didn't feel that selfish to me. Towards the end of the series though, the writing just leads me to feel that way.

Despite all the faults it does have it's stuff like this that does remind me of why I liked the first 4 Seasons. However I do feel the sisterhood element of the show lost it's theme after Season 4, as there were hardly moments that emphasized or showcased that dynamic and all the sisters seemed to do their own thing. It also felt like they became three roommates rather than 3 sisters. Still I loved this element earlier on in the series. When Prue and Phoebe argue or showcase any sort of distain you felt it's how siblings would fight or disapprove. I also preferred Piper's meeker, neurotic and sarcastic side of earlier seasons as well. Great video.

I would disagree with that whole comment. its natural for sisters and brothers to want to strike out on their own. If they have been leaving together for so long. But that my opinion.

    • @Surgemaster2012
      @Surgemaster2012 Před 5 lety +5

@@walterwhite9957 That's not my point. What I mean is that after season 4 the girls hardly felt like sisters and felt more like roommates. Not to mention how divided each of them became. Piper and Phoebe became too self focused and let their priorities dictate their judgement while Paige focused on the craft and was more independent. Sisterhood moments were more rare and since everything became so divided so did the sisterhood.

Period. And that's exactly what everyone should know, or everyone who has watched charmed correctly. And that's why I love it. I hardly know of a series where the storyline is interesting, meaningful and unpredictable, where the actors breathe life into their characters and how much attention is paid to the little things. Of course the series is not 100% perfect. But she's getting very close...(if you think about it)

Through the three seasons you can see how extremely close Prue and Piper were to eachother. I mean Holly and Shannon were actually best friends in real life since forever. Till the end they even almost died together at the end of season 3. I mean they died on the same day but you know time reversal thing We all saw that Piper was Devastated especially when she was a Fury when she really broke down I’m not gonna lie I still cry every-time I see. Like I said if Prue didn’t interfered and push the doctor away from Shax, she would have possibly still be alive cause Shax was going after the doctor first then the charmed ones. I didn’t like the doctor anyway he was too cocky and arrogant when he put that dumbass Tupae (Correct me with the spelling of Tupae anybody I don’t know how to spell it) on just blabbering about them after being exposed like Prue said about Dr Williamson maybe he’s the innocent that they were not suppose to save. Though I didn’t want him to die but he could at least kept something a secret. And can someone tell me how Tempest after two years was still injured? Did Prue literally hurt him that bad to end the time loop? Anyway I love the Piper and Prue chemistry especially when they went back to the 70s and when little Prue and Piper were fighting over a doll and as grown ups they were fighting about the doll years later it was adorable
Sad Fact: Prue died three times and the third time was the charm 😢
Other fact: the character who portrayed Shax also portrayed multiple demons such as Belthazor aka Cole Turner

I love Charmed, have every episode on DVD and everything. And I think part of that stems from the sisterly relationship the four sisters share, particularly since I have three sisters myself with me being the third sister of us four girls and counting my brother the fourth born overall. The five of us are quite close even if my little sister is still growing up. Knowing how strong the bond between siblings is really cements how close the sisters are for me. Strangely despite having been the baby for seven years before my sister was born, I always felt like I related to Piper more. Like her I'm introverted and want stability.

I think they were destinied to become equals anyway. I wish we could see that happening in a progress with Prue, it would be more intersting and would have a greater character development for all of them. By introducing a new character it's only normal and usual to develop a different relationship: different person, different roles, and it happened more drastically!

I mean the dynamics did change after Prue died Very much so the show went from it being about sisters who are witches to witches who happen to be sisters it definitely understands why they would change because they didn't grown up with Paige like they did with Prue but to be honest with you I like the Dynamic better with the original 3 because it's more sisterly and the storylines in 1-3 are better as well I mean season 4 had good storylines too I didn't like the Dynamic that the show took in season 5 and 6 because they didn't deal with like demons and warlocks it told more fairytale stuff make believe stuff Dat I' just didn't like season 7 definitely was good because it reverted back to the way things were like in season 1 a inspector chasing after them being in there business even though agent Brody got on my nerves cuz they tried to make him be like Andy and he wasn't but the avatar stuff did too but Season 7 brought Piper and Paige closer liker her Relationship was with Prue they started being around each other more rather than being closed off and in season 8 as well because Phoebe got Closer to Billie like a Sister too

Personally, I found and find the dynamic of the sisters following Prue's death far more representative of real life.
I think that Shannen Doherty was very headstrong in wanting to be the lead actress, the strongest and it came across in the show.
I think that all 3 actresses in Seasons 4-8 were happy to be seen as equal in their characters and didn't want to come across as if any one of them was more dominant than the other and to be honest that's very important because most siblings don't have that kind of relationship with each other, like it was made out in seasons 1-3 and I think that if they did, with Prue being the way she was towards her sisters with a pretty small age gap of 3-5 years... that the other two would not be close to her at all as I personally wouldn't stand for nonsense like that from an "elder" sister of a few years... 10 years plus yeah but not 3-5 years... she's not that much older that she had to take on huge responsibilities - I think that's what people forget. Her sisters were not babies, they were grown adults.

I have four sisters. The three older ones have an identical relationship as Prue, Piper and Phoebe. They're each four years apart. They're relationship is very spot on with how siblings (especially girls) develop units and operate within throughout life. Being closer in age actually fosters the dependency more than a larger gap because they grew with firm hierarchy their entire lives. My sisters are in their 40's and late 30's now and they still have the same dynamic though they have their own families. My younger sister and I kind of function as Paige to some degree.

Then eventually Paige turns selfish as well throughout season 6 - 8. My problem they take being witches and saving innocent as a burden they don't wanna save innocent they wanna ignore them. Pheobe and piper always got more screen time and more storyline leaving Paige to take the back seat.
