Phoebe and Wyatt are so alike. Like they both were born in the Manor, over the Nexus, they both had the possibility to turn either way, like you said. And then on top of that, Phoebe and her attachment to Wyatt as a baby. This right here is genius.

This was absolutely beautiful. The part about when Phoebe lost her baby and her becoming “obsessed” with baby Wyatt had me a little emotional. I never thought about it in that way before and now I can’t unsee it 😭😭 it’s so subtle and so heartbreaking

Nick Haynes true... that’s why I hate how everyone says when phoebe got pregnant it wasn’t hers but phoebe fell in love with the baby felt it move. When phoebe lost the baby it was the same thing as a miscarriage but different...
Also, she's so set to become pregnant in the final two seasons for the same reason. She wants to finally become the mother she couldn't at first.
That was the only endearing part of the video.

When you think about Phoebe never really getting over the loss of her baby with Cole, it also makes a little more sense why she would end up so obsessed with conceiving her premonition baby, too. By that point in the show it was established that Phoebe's premonitions were real to her. She actually projected into the future and experienced it. So, for her, not conceiving that baby probably felt like loosing another child. And it made sense that Phoebe was not ready to deal with that.
I think people hate her because they don't understand how much trauma she has been through and that's the writings fault, there was a lack of nuance, lack of depth for her storyline.
I really don't blame the writing at all in this regard. Charmed to me has always been a show that goes over a lot of people's heads especially for the people who aren't as emotionally mature. When you're young (like I was when the show started) you tend to focus on the glamorous & more apparent easily compelling concepts, but as you grow older (hopefully wiser) you start seeing MANY profound things you didnt/couldn't have been able to catch onto before.
I'd say that the subtlety of charmed shines through as a strength in a way that the reboot failed, and is a key reason for the success of the former. Like for example I used to think the cole+phoebe story was poorly done and that they shouldve been endgame, then looked at it from the point of view of Cole as a drug addict, who yes was truly in love, but his 'evil' as the substitute for a drug addiction. I then realized what a mature storyline it actually was because yeah, sadly sometimes love isn't enough.
The only people who hate phoebe for her baby obsession (in other words her miscarriage trauma) are most likely the same people who complain that "phoebe changed" and seem to have an aversion to a character's growth & evolution on the character's own terms. Give it time, one day they'll catch up, maybe. Or not.
She was my favorite at first, I just hated how they ran her character into the ground after a while.

@@callanbailey8008 it felt like the writers wanting her to be empathetic but that just not being how she comes across later. I actually really like her character trope which is why she started as my favorite, but that charm (heh) was lost after a while.
Phoebe is my favorite, but I do think Piper has the best character development 😁❤️
I couldn’t agree more. Hands down! Piper had the greatest transformation. Although many people hated Prue’s death, her death propelled Piper.

@@BellesView , not really. Piper was like that when Prue was still on the show and as the show went on, Piper could of still been like that with Prue on the show. Plus, the chemistry was not the same with Paige. She never felt like a sister. Charmed is about the sisters and Paige never fit.
I loved Phoebe especially in the early seasons. Even though I like things about the direction she went in, I wonder where Constance M. Burge would have taken her character if she stayed on the show. Great analysis. I can't wait for Piper's video!

I love how she went from being the baby-sister of the family until the roles change when Paige came into the picture. She gradually evolved to being the baby, to be the middle sister and the bridge between the two sisters.
She was best as the baby sister.
I personally think that Seasons 7 and 8 show her reconnecting with her old self, and bringing her close to how she'd been in the earlier seasons. She takes a sabbatical from her column when she realises she's just been phoning it in because she doesn't like it being just a job - she wants to help as many people as possible. In 'Styx Feet Under', she chooses to face the fact that she might die because she won't let an innocent be hurt instead of her, and earns her premonitions back because of it. She's also the one who has to understand that Utopia is robbing people of their emotions and ability to grieve, and gives up the good future she saw in her premonition because of it. And in the eighth season, she's the one who acts as a guide and mentor to Billie, who out of all the sisters resembles her the most. She ends the series feeling like her old self, just with more maturity.
the bit about phoebe being overexcited about wyatt bc of her previous loss was a very interesting take, i never considered that before. and seeing all phoebe went through its easy to pinpoint where her character “changed” and why. this was a great character study!!
I'm glad I watched this whole video through. Tbh, it changed my whole perspective on Phoebe and I developed a new respect for her since I relate to the abuse and trauma she's gone through that you pointed out. I never noticed but people don't understand that when you come out of an abusive relationship, you're a new person. And Cole was extremely toxic and abusive in a lot of ways. The fact she still kept her core traits as you pointed out while trying to find the new her after a relationship like that, is admirable and something I can relate to so hard.
I agree with all of this. The fact that she went through so much for 8 years is sad. She lost the love of her life Cole, her unborn son which is a mother's biggest fear is losing their child, she became the queen of the Underworld, and through a lot of trauma like losing her sister Prue. It just sucks that Phoebe haters don't understand what she's been through her entire life. I agree that she did become a little selfish in later seasons unlike the first 3 seasons, but people really have to understand what it would be like losing the love of your life and your child which is traumatizing and the baby was unborn as well. I bet Phoebe haters would understand if they were in her shoes for 8 whole years. I'm glad she turned from her selfish ways after Season 8 atleast.
I love the little anguished keen in 5x7 when she thinks she's killed Paige. A taste of the emotion that's been building up in her since the end of S3 I think.
And people see to forget that unlike the rest of her siblings Phoebe didn't get parental love, so her need for love is greater
Don't forget how she was always deemed a screw up her whole life and the 'failure' of her family. Even the demons mocked her powers since they were passive & as I recall once described her & her powers as "negligible". She was always seen as the worthless useless aimless one and was CONSTANTLY trying to prove herself throughout the entire show. And finally she manages to gain some success in her career and the haters hate on that too. Phoebe is low-key an underdog for anyone who was paying attention.

No, her becoming an advice columnist wasn’t the problem, she literally lost herself by being with cole and searching for love.

I actually really dislike phoebe at the beginning. I think early cole but after her first job she's super likable
I would say, it was blaming Cole for everything going wrong in her life, and then getting obssesed with love and babies. Season 2 was Phoebe at her best
People change but she changed so much over time towards the end of the series she became unrecognizable to who she was in season 1. Going from the heart of the show to someone who wouldn't help innocents because it got in the way of her shopping was tough to watch.
She was trying to learn self-love after years of always helping others romantically or as an innocent. They went the wrong way of showing it though
The way she did Cole wrong was just...UGH. They were BOTH possessed, she dragged him to evil by not letting that sorcerer take his evil powers and then wouldn't bother saving him. She really was his demise and she never got the blame for it by using evil fetuses and potions as an excuse.
Piper was my favorite character and being a middle child myself, definitely related to her. But you are on point that it was Phoebe at the heart of the show. You are correct on the change of Phoebe during the later seasons. That was one of the reasons why I stopped watching towards seasons 7 thru 8 among others. But I think the transition had to happen because she did become the middle child with the arrival of Paige. Hope you can do a Piper and a Paige video as well... 😁
She was definitely the heart of Charmed, she was very relatable. The creator of the show said she was the easiest one to write. I wonder what would have happened to her character if Constance never left the show, but I'm glad she became successful. I'm excited for Piper's video. Hope it comes out soon!
phoebe halliwell is so amazing
I love all your analyses. I discovered 'Charmed' during season 6 (The 3 blondes episode) at age 8/9 and was hooked since. Phoebe was easily my favourite. A few years ago I decided to rewatch the show, watching it from season 1 for the first time. At the time I still really loved it, probably due to the nostalgia goggles and because of that same nostalgia, I decided to watch it again late last year. This time though was different. I found that I enjoyed the early seasons way more that the last and struggled to watch the last 2 seasons - I eventually gave up during season 8. It was so weird to me because I remember just loving the show when I was younger and I also really enjoyed those first few seasons during my current rewatch.
I think the problem was that the change in characters was so jarring after Prue died. I still enjoyed season 4 and most of season 5 but the characters of Phoebe and Leo just became more and more unlike themselves. From the moment Cole was introduced I wasn't a fan of how Phoebe became characterized and after he left it just felt like the writers forgot the essence of who she was. I still really enjoyed your perspective though, especially the Wyatt part because I never connected that dot and through that lens, that arc becomes less cringe.I hope you do a Piper video at some point too and keep up the great work,

This was a fantastic video essay! I've only seen the first few seasons of Charmed so it was very interesting to see how Phoebe changed over the seasons and I love how you focused on how Phoebe's main traits impacted her both positively and negatively. I really love video essays that evaluate characters and their dynamics with other characters and this was great.
I can't say I've ever seen her the way Rachel describes her. I always preferred Prue. To me, Phoebe had to be propped by the other sisters in many ways. I also didn't appreciate the fact that she betrayed her sisters more than once over a man, & was shown, in VARIOUS timelines, to be willing to be evil & adversarial toward her sisters.
But Rachael explains the reasons for that being that she has the potential to become either good or evil because of where she was born; this also connects to Wyatt who has that potential for the same reasons. Phoebe's tendency to be swept along by her emotions makes sense for her to switch allegiances since she is battling with an inner conflict of who she loves more; her sisters or the love of her life. It's a very relatable and realistic personality trait that we see in many people.
We all have good & evil inside of us. If you ever watched supernatural in one season Charlie goes to OZ and theres a war going on and she makes a deal with a wizard to split her soul one hafe is good and the other hafe is bad. Plus chuck aka god is light and amara is darkness they created the world yin and yang one can’t live without the other. Plus phoebe more powerful then piper,prue,or Paige. Phoebe power is love she can kill a demon with love for example at the end of season 5x16 of lost girl bo kills her evil father hades with love. Phoebe can kill demons,warlocks,monsters,vampires because their full of darkness that are hollow they don’t know what love is which hurts them.
@@AngelicMistyStorm no way is Phoebe more powerful than Prue. Piper and Phoebe admitted in season 4 that Prue was the strongest witch of their group. I can agree w/ your point about the duality of good & evil in all of us, they even touched on the need for BOTH good & evil on the show in the grand scheme of things in many storylines, but for me, it just comes down to personal choice & preference. Phoebe was never my fave, or even likeable to me, b/c her of her behavior.
@@shadymercury prue is powerful because of her active powers but in battle against a demon or warlock she using her active powers more than her cunning in a real battle she would be on her ass in 5 minutes because her ego is to big because she sees herself as unbeatable and she’s goes in guns blazing. When phoebe has to use her cunning to beat the demon,warlock or monster. As phoebe power would grow she could play mind game on demons and warlocks to beat them. Also with phoebe power phoebe has a good poker face because she uses her cunning but prue does not because right away demons and warlocks know she will use her active powers to try to beat them.

While I love all the sisters, phoebe was always my favourite, particularly in the earlier seasons, and I felt I could relate to her the most. Alyssa milano is also ridiculously beautiful throughout the seasons ♡

Totally agree. After seeing a few videos on Cas and Phoebe being together, and rewatching both shows, I am trying to work on a fanfic with a slightly different version of Phoebe, but a lot of her is the same. I think Eric and Phoebe were too cute for it just have been one episode with them together.
As a lifelong Phoebe stan, I can't even articulate how much I love this insightful and eloquent analysis!
I liked her character until season 4, then it just went downhill for me. By the end of the series, she was my least favorite of the sisters. At times it felt her character had no direction and that she was reduced to a Mary Sue or whatever the equivalent of the male power fantasy but for girls is called. Sometimes I felt she became a cartoon version of herself or a running gag to see what costume was Alyssa Milano going to be dressed as that week... I don't remember ANY of the scenes at the news paper being remotely interesting. I do remember many times thinking that I needed to endure those scenes before we could get back to the witchy and more interesting stuff.

I feel like Season 5 was the end of Charmed. This is when the original creator was finally pushed away from the show. She always fought for the core of the show to be the sisters and their relationship. It was Brad Kern who "ruined" Phoebe in the tail end of the show. I feel like there is an obvious break between all of the sister's personalities from season 5 to season 6. They completely changed overnight. This is not me hating on the show. Charmed means SO much to me. That being said, I think it is okay to look back and critique it now.
The true finale was season 7 but yeah Charmed "ended" when the creator stepped out and the focus wasn't on sisterhood anymore but on sexy costumes.

Great character analysis! I also have a thought about Phoebe being the heart of Charmed - would it have been that way if Alyssa Milano hadn't played her? We know she wasn't originally cast as Phoebe and after watching the pilot that never aired with Lori Rom, I remember thinking wow how lucky they were to get her! There is a reason some actresses become famous over others....
Alyssa Milano is effortlessly charismatic, her smile lights up the room and the camera loves her - she also was able to nail comedy so made a nice contrast to Holly and Shannen who are naturally more dramatic actresses. It's interesting because I remember Brad Kern saying Phoebe was meant to be the 'joie de vivre' character and Alyssa seems to just embody that, - which makes me think how on earth an actress like dull-as-dishwater Lori Rom got cast as Phoebe in the first place? When you compare those two pilots, Alyssa makes almost every line funny, sassy or fun - Lori reads them so straight and deadpan. Two actresses, same character, same lines - completely different viewing experience.
There may even be a video in how important casting the right actors are in a show? Do writing and story idea go so far, if you don't have the correct actor for the part? Would the show have appealed to as many people if it wasn't for what Alyssa brought to the Phoebe character?

People always say phoebe powers are useless but it’s actually useful. No one knows how it feels for her to not only watch her sisters in pain but to feel their pain and to feel the whole world pain. Also phoebe may not have active powers but she can beat people with her mind and phoebe doesn’t go in all guns blazing like prue. Even the angel of death told prue she’s not invincible. Also the episode sin San Francisco piper and phoebe and Leo all had a sin the demon gave them but the demon said prue didn’t get a sin because she already had one pride. Also even the seer said in phoebe future phoebe would be powerful. Also having premonitions is good because she’s fighting a demon she will know when the demon will attack so phoebe can counter attack.

I think it’s interesting that so many people dislike Phoebe because she was very focused on love. However, I think it’s important to remember that she may crave connection because she lost her mother very young & her father was absent for most of her life.

Phoebe is the sister I'd be the closest to when it comes to magic. It might seem weird put up like that but my hypersensitivity gives me empathy and some kind of intuition so her powers make me feel like home, even if she's not my favorite sister.
Multiple producers have spoken up about the toxic and sexist environment in the Charmed writing room and set. Brad Kern, who has faced allegations of misconduct and sexual harassment from multiple women, removed Constance Burge from her own creation. He intended to eliminate Shannen and Constance, and he succeeded. Brad steered Charmed in a different direction, disregarding Constance's desires. Additionally, he mocked Alyssa when she gained weight due to an illness. He and his associates consistently dressed Alyssa and Rose in revealing outfits and attempted to pressure Holly into wearing a push-up bra.
Brad didn't respect Constance's vision for the characters.
This was remarkable. Phoebe is my favorite sis. This was great.

There's been a lot of tension between Alssya and Rose lately as well. But, just because they don't like Alssya doesn't mean they have to hate Phoebe as well. Phoebe's a great character regardless if Alyssa is toxic or not.
"We are the protectors of the innocence" 3 years later "I can't deal with this world destruction threat bcs I have to go to work" it's fascinating how much a character can degrade over time and become the polar opposite of what they used to be. It's even more hilarious when she somehow managed to make becoming an empath - the one power solely meant to connect with other people problems - all about herself.
If you put yourself in her shoes in their world. NOBODY would have the same thinking as when they first started out. Phoebe didint know what was going to happen so by the time it was getting tiring, she gave up SORT OF
Tbh I would not judge anyone if they wanted to give up that kind of life. I mean... being haunted by demons, warlocks, ghosts and being responsible for innocents lives and not being able to safe all of them and losing a sister due to a demon, having your children haunted by supernatural beings PLUS losing your boyfriend/husband several times to the supernatural. I mean.. how can you blame them for wanting to quit. We should praise them for doing their job for so long.

if the characters KNEW an unavoidable apocalypse would happen, it would be reasonable to lay down and wait for the end... but it's not as good as the story of the person who tries to help others through it or, better yet, tried to stop it (even if it's futile)
@@disconnected9765 Um...they are top magical beings and their job is to protect the innocent, above everything. That was their so called destiny. Dates aren't more important. Normal life schtick isn't more important. Shopping isn't more important. Work isn't more important. Her demon boyfriend was POSSESSED by the Source when he tried to save their lives in season 4, he didn't choose to become evil, she did instead under no magical influence (don't the evil fetus excuse because in the next episode she's going back and forth about trying it both ways by remaining Queen of the underworld and a Charmed one while everyone overstates it was HER DECISION to stand by Cole) and then blamed him for every single thing in her life until she vanquished him. Prue also died partly because Phoebe had the genius idea to abandon her sisters during a dangerous demon hunt and go to the underworld to save her boyfriend. "Phoebe, where are you?" are Prue's final words btw. Who wants to watch a show about heroes not wanting to be heroes ? It should be about balancing a normal life with saving innocents, not complain in every single episode about doing so. It's tiring and the show goes nowhere.
@@mariashaki89 You make it sound like they're just slaves and shouldn't have personalities outside of being protectors. It's a pretty horrible take. And trying to blame her for Cole when it was very well established that their unborn son was influencing her actions is very telling, even more so that you try to blame her for Prue which was not her fault by any stretch of logic.

Her name is Margarita (Mar for short and nothing to do with the new reboot and a nod to my Spanish craze and the name of another iconic character) she was found as a child abandoned on the streets and was taken to the magical school where noone had a clue of her identity and was raised as an orphan surrounded by kids with families and the legend and legacy of the charmed ones hanging over her head and creating an ideal standard that everyone had to live up to. she was later frowned upon when her fire powers bagan to manifest as they are still considered as evil ones. still noone can figure out who she is and everyday she gets closer and closer to chris as they both have to live up to an ideal both have nothing to do with (Chris is only valued for what his future self had done and not for what he is growing up and Mar wanting to prove she is worthy of love and a place in the magical world). When she finds out who she is everyone brings her down, attacks her, even bullies her (her younger half sisters especially as the older PJ thinks she came to steal everything that is rightfully theirs and especially PJ thinks she will lose the op of the first born). chris is the only one by her side but when she full on goes dark even he is uncertain of her intentions. Phoebe doesn''t want to accept her, despite the evidence that is her daughter and the fact that with time she develops telekinisis and premonitions along with her demonic powers. and that makes it equally powerful as Wyatt. In the season 3 episode when they traveled back to Melinda Warrens time, she realy embraced magic,well, the comical aspect of it. I kinda miss how involved she was with her witchcraft, but also made sense, since she wanted love and stability in later seasons more.
cole and phoebe drove the show for 3 seasons as the stakes were real. I would like the queen of the underworld run longer than 2-3 episodes and it could be more compelling and rich. yes phoebe lost her way after all that. a better management by a good showrunner could get two seasons out of that and not 3 episodes if only they were willing to commit to a darker storyline. but they didn't want to go there. they tried later with chris and wyatt which also crashed and burned. i can only make the relevant fanfiction of true gritty storyline for the magical family with true flaws and passions in my head

It's so interesting how certain things in the show were done so brilliantly, like the nuances of its mythology & evolution - for example, Phoebe the empath with "passive" abilities always being the heart of the show, Piper evolving as the dominant sister/witch after Prue's death, etc - and then other things were done so poorly, particularly after Season 4, the silly, campy storylines and lack of continuity. It seems like after Season 4, a lot of the production and themes just got lazy.

i can actually really relate to phoebe so much reason she is my fav character being the youngest also a Scorpio like her character and being the baby of my fam being the only one with no career also having trouble in love. my first marriage also failing and even more painful the loss a baby. having had a miscarriage i can relate to that in a deep way i actually even cried at that part.

Phoebe is also the one who really fought for a demon who wanted to be a human being. It's to bad the other demon hot to her first. She also befriended the demon witch because she and phoebe, had the same powers!
I loved all of the sisters! Even though, Piper was my favorite. They were all unique and had special qualities that united their sisterhood. That was the best part I loved about the show was the relationship they had with each other.
I love Phoebe in spite of her imperfections. 💜 Mary Sues bore me. I prefer characters that are complex and imperfect.
Bruh Paige was my favorite. First off I’m obsessed with Rose McGowan so that help. Also the first episode I ever watched was back in 2013. It was season 4 episode 3 and the first character in screen was Paige so I immediately loved her. Then I’d probably say Piper. I never really disliked her at any given point in the show and that helped because I kinda got turned off from Phoebe. Piper was the most bad ass in my opinion. Then I’d say Prue, I didn’t want to watch the first three seasons because Rose wasn’t in them but when I did, I’m sad that the whole show wasn’t as dark like the first three seasons. Prue was probably my favorite during the first three but when she died piper moved up. Then it’s phoebe, man I loved her in the first seasons then after awhile it seemed like she lost her steam. But however I still love them all
