    An easy way to tell the difference between the weights of comp bells is the paintwork condition. The 16kg (yellow in the vid) has been bashed around, paint chipped off it everywhere (well used). The Big Boy 40kg (white in the vid) is in nearly brand new condition (probably used twice) including for the filming of the vid. 😂

    Would appreciate your thoughts on whether competition kettlebell is practical for fitness work (I'm not interested in kettlebell sport) without having to chalk the handle. I've used hardstyle bells thus far, but have wanted to try using a competition bell. I workout in my home and the idea of having chalk getting all over the place is a negative incentive. I notice you use competition bells for your videos without chalk, but I realize you're not doing many reps when you're simply demonstration movements. How likely to you think it is that I'd need to chalk a competition bell?

    after trying both i prefer the soft (competition) style KB's, especially the ones from ROGUE since they have these flat cutouts to them that make them more comfortable when resting in the rack or other positions. I like how each one has the same size, feels more consistent when changing between weights. the spherical shape puts more pressure all on one point on your forearm bone which can hurt more as opposed to the flat surface spreading the pressure out across more surface area. they're certainly more expensive and often out of stock but maybe there's some other brands that have the same feature. i share this channel to all my friends interested in kettlebells, thanks!

    I wish I had seen this 6 months ago. I have two hard style that have never rested correctly on my arm in the clean position. Both bought for the price off of Amazon. I started with a 20lb. and after a few weeks got a 35 lb. They work great for swings and squats. The cleans, presses, and TCU can be challenging with the way they rest on my arm but I make it work. I will be going to a 50 lb. in a couple of months and will get a competition style then.

    Center of mass is closer to the hand on the competition kettlebells.
    This way it makes it easier to make more reps.
    Classic KBs have lower center of mass, it helps to develop strength.

  • @ispawnalot
    @ispawnalot Před 3 lety +29

    Hiya Mark. I think there is a small but important point you're missing about competition kb's. They're all the same size and shape so that the dynamic remains consistent. You don't have to alter your grip, stance, or action when you change weights. Once good form is learnt and solidified in the mind there is never any need to change it. This is crucial to maintain good form and thus avoid injury and less effective training. You can also use any kb anywhere in the world comfortably and without issue.

    About Pro GRADE Style Kettlebells and what all say "competition" exist much more details to choose a good Kettlebell. It depends of size of hand and depends technique used on pendulum movements, on Clean and Snatch. The inside handle size is the question :) also the way is made is very important for us, athletes of Kettlebell Sport. We can fell the big difference of stability between them. We use only one kind of the others.... In competition, with different Pro Grade we can have 30% less on performance. Kettlebells are not only a ball with a handle all of same size.

      Not sure if you found an answer, but Kettlebell Kings and Kettlebells USA are two of the big players in the US. If you're near Denver, I bought some bells from Simpsons Fitness supply that were pretty solid. Common hard style bells are from Dragondoor or Rogue. Regardless, I do not recommend you buy any kettlebell that does not have a spherical shape, i.e. the ones with a monkey face or a deeply imprinted logo - these are not comfortable resting on your forearm.

    I'm pretty sure the grip is correct (follows your guidance).
    Is this typically problematic for taller lifters (I'm 6'6") and would the larger diameter of soft-style be any better in your experience?

    • @MarkWildman

    Besides differences in kettlebells (I strongly prefer using competition-style bells), there is a big difference in what soft style (gurevoy sport) and hard style (which came from Pavel Tsatsouline) teaches. Soft style is about of working with kettlebells in a most efficient way and about breathing in a most efficient way as well. Hard style is a full opposite, it's about handling kettlebells in an artificial no-efficient way to make exercises harder!

    Struggledd to figure out what bells to buy when I was getting into KBs. I opted for competition bells and for me they are the right choice, sure juggling is a bit harder but that's cool. My gym has a pair of hard style of bells that are 100 lbs each. Want to talk about garbage? Yeah these are it. Someone just scaled up a smaller hard bell to the weight. The handles are at least 1 3/4" in diameter! The castings are so horrible to boot. The kicker is that someone who works for my gym actually bought these things. Of course there isn't a trainer there that actually can use KBs...

    Just realised it's not me it's the kettlebell that's hurting my wrist. Have been practicing the 'hooking' movement for cleans and was experiencing a lot of discomfort and not knowing what I was doing wrong. I now see the lower the weight I was using to practice the smaller the handle and the less room for movement I was giving myself. Seems I need to get a new competition bell for myself 😎👌

    Why exactly do they have "hard" or "soft" names attached?

    • @PearsAreOkay
      @PearsAreOkay Před 4 lety +1

      It is all a marketing gimmick. "Hardstyle" came from the DragonDoor Publishing Company. They were partnered with Pavel Tsatsouline in late 90s and early 2000s. Pretty much introduced kettlebells to the Western Market. The "soft" style was later "discovered", I guess, through CZcams? These were the thinner-handled Kettlebells which were utilized in the Kettlebell Sport Competitions over in Russia (more or less), that typically involved max repetition efforts for the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk, at a 10 minute interval each. Pretty much freakishly strong (like real genetic freaks with crazy-high stress tolerances) guys and girls that were on par with Olympic-level athletes. And therein, the "soft" style gimmick came about, but I personally think the "hardstyle" is the real gimmick. Like, you wouldn't train yourself on a fat-bar style Olympic barbell for a Starting Strength program--that is just an uphill battle of moronic proportions. I think one sort of feat of "strength" (and I use quotes on purpose for strength) is the 10-minute snatch test with a 24kg kettlebell. I have never seen any of these online Kettlebell trainers ever upload footage like that apart from someone like a Jeff Martone, who is one hell of a monster kettlebell lifter.

    • @PearsAreOkay
      @PearsAreOkay Před 4 lety +1

      Oh, and I forgot to mention, the "soft" style came from the thinking, "well, that's not hardstyle, I guess that must be soft style?" It is incorrect, it is not soft style--it should be termed "Sport Style"

    • @MarkWildman
      @MarkWildman  Před 4 lety +1

      good answer. if i could, i would add that in Hardstyle you make the body rigid and move the bell around the body. and in soft, completion, you move the body more around the bell. and then there's the single hip dip, and double hip dip thing.

    • @MarkWildman
      @MarkWildman  Před 4 lety +1

      super super strong. if you can use two 48k bells, you would be an ungodly monster of strength. i thin stronger than barbells because of the crazy complexity you can do. they won't necessarily be the same as barbell because joint angle determines muscle firing, so you will have a different angle of strength. but yes, you would be crazy strong. ancient peoples where crazy strong. atlas stone lifting and heavy club swinging check out the rouge documentary on the ancient lifting stones
