  • TRENDING | In part-two of an exclusive interview with film producer Nancy Spielberg, sister of Steven Spielberg, she shares personal family photos and anecdotes of their Boheminan upbringing from her Jerusalem home.
    Story:
Nancy Spielberg has fulfilled her dream of the past several decades - to have a second home in Jerusalem.
It’s a far cry from Phoenix, Arizona, where Steven Spielberg and his three younger sisters - Nancy, Anne and Sue grew up. Nancy showed a picture of a 1950 army jeep, and said that is how they were driven to school every morning.
‘We didn’t have much of Jewish upbringing. We knew we were Jewish because neighbors would remind us that we were Jewish and needed to take a bath,’ she said.
But it was in the desert of the southwest, where young Steven found his inspiration, and discovered his talent for scaring people by using his sisters as ‘bait.’
‘He would draw Medussa-like scary faces and when our parents went out for night, he’d say if you can sleep with this staring at you, I’ll give you a nickel,’ Nancy recounted.
She laughed. ‘It’s post-traumatic Steve disorder!’
The family found a way to fit in by entertaining the neighborhood. Nancy says Steven bought his first camera from money he made selling tickets to a makeshift home movie screening.
‘We went through the neighborhood and sold tickets to all the kids… We’d hang our parents’ bed sheet on a clothing line. That was our screen to show movies,’ Nancy said.
The Spielbergs’ parents were influential figures in their lives.
Nancy calls her Bohemian mom their ‘own personal Peter Pan.’
‘Red nails, red lips, smoking a cigar… She was amazing,’ she said. ‘My mother bought us a monkey as a pet.’
Nancy continued: ‘She never wanted to grow up and remained ‘forever young’ until she died…at the age of 97...She was one of the kids. ‘Grow up’ was a dirty word.'
Nancy’s father Arnold, ‘was the serious one, a computer engineer with a pocket protector.’
She explained that their father often worried what Steven would do for a living. ‘My brother - even today, gives my father scripts.... and asks what to do next. My dad is on every set.’
When ‘Jaws’ came out, Nancy was living on a kibbutz in Israel and had her own shark scare snorkeling in Sinai.
There was a huge shark - not really huge, but anything bigger sardine is huge to me. ‘I knew what to do because I read the book - which is to stay calm and not make sudden movement. Of course, I thrashed and screamed and ripped off my goggles,’ she explained.
Nancy eventually moved to Hollywood - but big brother was very protective.
‘He said ‘when guys ask you out, they don’t really want to go out, they just want to get to me,’ she said. ‘So we developed a radar. If on a date, in the first five minutes the guy is pushing script or photo, or saying what’s it like having Steven for a brother, I knew.’
She literally ‘chased’ down Mr. Right - Shimmi, the son of a rabbi, renovated their Jerusalem apartment, as Nancy’s own documentary career put her ‘on the map.’
Her current film, championing hero journalists who buried 30,000 documents under the Warsaw Ghetto, plays like a mix of ‘Indiana Jone’ and ‘Schindler’s List.’
‘Steve thinks that ‘Schindler’s List’ is most important piece of work he’s ever done,’ Nancy said.
‘We are all very grateful. If you are grateful for blessings in life, it keeps you humble,’ she stated.
