- What is the borg scale? How does the borg scale work? What is RPE? How can I use RPE in training? Are just some of the questions we answer in this mini-lesson.
In this lesson we talk through what the Borg scale and Rate of Perceived Exertion are and the relationship between them and Heart Rate Training Zones.

Great video!! My teacher randomly threw Borg scale (with little explanation) into the powerpoint despite in not being in the book. This video helped a lot.
Hi Paris - Thank you for your feedback, I hope the video helped clear the Borg Scale up for you. All the best for your exams!

No problem at all, happy to help.
If I teach group strength exercises how I can feel if my clients work hard? How to estimate ?Thank you so much
Hi! I would like to ask. Why do we need to multiply it by 10?
I have question regarding comprehensive health related fitness scale. I do have individual test score and norms but how i establish a person performance is healthy or unhealthy.
One solution is i think report but i want all test score and give one picture.
Question, does this not depend on the kind of exercise and how long? So I do the test each time on the same exercises?
Hello Nadja, good question - both the duration and intensity of exercise, or indeed the type of exercise, can impact the score a person marks their work rate on the Borg Scale at. The scale lets a performer subjectively estimate how hard they think they are pushing their body at any given moment. E.g. During a triathlon, 2 performers matching each others swim speed, may record different Borg Scores to each other, because one has less capable body systems than the other to achieve that swim speed, therefore are working closer to their maximum than the other. However, during the cycle section of the race, if the same 2 performers are still matching each others speed, they may switch in that the less competent swimmer is a more efficient cyclist therefore now has a lower Borg score than their opponent. It is merely a guide a performer or coach can use to estimate how close to maximal capacity a performer is currently working. Diet, sleep, motivation, equipment, training are just some factors that could cause 1 person to give a different score to someone else despite the exercise they're both completing being identical.
Hope that helps!
Jonny
Is there any calculators that can be used to predict 1RM from a RPE result?
None that I know which are accurate. RPE is very subjective, while 1RM is a person's objective, quantifiable personal best. Hpwever, when faced with attempting a personal best 1RM, the performer should also grade their RPE as maximum if they are accurate in their opinions. Hope this helps!
I've found that my RPE is around 10-11 (based on the talk test) but I'm training at 85-90% of max HR. Does that mean I'm super fit lol?
I use the explanation of THE MODIFIED BORGS METHOD ..RPE in my cycle classes just before start , being apart of yhe introduction...
I bas mine from 1 to 10 ,
Ten being the maximum effort..
I explain the feeling of the numbering system .
1 to 5 ... ride easy ..
6 ... sprint zone .
7 somewhat hard .
8 hard .
9 very hard
10 maximum effort , short time here ,I use this for Attacks and surges ..
I work at some fitness centres that have computer screens in front of the members , for me it takes away the connection between student and instructor , its a down head society.... thats why I use this method so my members keep with me that face to face connection..
My lecturer at University keeps saying 9 is to high a number for RPE , but looking at the scale that is low right? Why would he say this?
I am applying for ERIP can you help me? I need a lot of guidance.
