- The cast of The Witcher sat down to catch up with BBC Radio 1’s film critic Ali Plumb to geek out about the show.
Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan tell us about the joys of filming scenes with hot water bottles strapped to them, and Joey Batey tells us about acting with mice and improvising a penis joke as a bet.
Plus, Kim Bodnia and Ali try to answer that age old question: “Why go to New Zealand when the north of England is so epic?”

Jaskier was probably my favourite character in season 1 - the comic relief that he brought into the show was what truly kept me hooked because the unraveling events were difficult to understand if you don't have the nuanced context from reading the books. Being absent for most of season 2, I missed him so much.
That part on the boat where a character was criticising one of his songs, basically mocking criticism of Season 1, was the one part that made me dislike his character and I feel like that was more the creators trying to vent their frustrations over it without being called out for being butthurt. So that makes him my absolute favourite character
Idk why but the writing for his character felt very bad in the later episodes. He had some really good scenes with Yen and the "fire fucker" in the beginning but after he meets Gerald , his character doesn't do anything. If you cut from the last episodes it changes literally nothing.
I think they needed a way for Gerald to know about Yennifer and the Witch and after Jasker told him - he did his part and everything after that just felt like they didn't know what to do with him. His comedic relief didn't hit very well , because things were getting dark ..like Ciri murdering people ..babies being killed..you know the usual.
Don't get me wrong I like both the character and the actor, I just feel they just didn't know what to do with him in the end.

Completely agree, I was so excited when he showed up. I wish he had more lines in the last episode. SPOILER: Felt like he had the chance to say something after the big battle, like he could've asked Geralt if everyone he knew were as cold as he is, or when Ciri blew him off. He just let it go with, 'Like father like daughter' I want more banter from him and it sounds like Joey could come up with some great lines for it
Can't stand it when jaskier is in scenes,he is so annoying to me.The only thing that is a negative about Witcher is the annoying jaskier.
Their appreciation of Ali's style as interviewer was so wholesome! He deserves every bit of it, always a pleasure watching.
Ali's the best interviewer there is. I wouldn't mind him getting his own weekly talk show.

Anya Chalotra looks so collected and well put together in contrast with her character Yennefer who is like raw ambition and chaos. She is a great actress. I don't care what anybody thinks. She makes a great Yennefer and the character would not have come to life if it wasn't for her amazing acting skills.
I don’t know if you have read the books or played the games but Yennefer is also well put together. Yennefer cares a lot about how she is perceived aesthetically. She also makes sure Ciri is always looking presentable and lady like. I notice it’s not something that’s been on the forefront in season 1 but maybe it will in season 2? Idk… but I agree with you she’s definitely a great Yennefer.
@@GinoGonzalez12 well I haven't read the book or played the games, but I assume that Yennefer wasn't well put together from the start. Because the Yennefer in the series had an origin story, so if they'll go book or game accurate I guess she'll get better at that.
@@benjaminlundback8394 it is not her fault, she played her really good, but the bad writing was the problem. In The Last Wish, Yen has a strong character, while in the show, she seems a bit childish. The actor was not at fault here
@@dedestudio9699 I don't think the writing is bad. You are just saying that she is not like her character in the books or games. Characters change throughout shows. Just because you're unhappy that she isn't the same it doesn't mean that the writing is bad.
@@benjaminlundback8394 u said u haven't read the books. When you read it, then reject my idea. The writing in this show didn't have a good range. Sometimes it was powerful, and sometimes it was flat, especially in Voice of Reason. Even Henry Cavil himself have to correct the director to use the source material. Does that mean the show is bad? No, but it could be better.
I was critical of Miss Chalotra as Yennefer, but I can't imagine anybody else now for the role. She has made the role her own and owns it perfectly. I am now a full blown fan.
She is the best! I think her acting overall is best but first season she really did outstading performance and was kind of disappointed that she wasn't praised for it.
Kim Bodnia nailed it as old Vesemir. You feel his gruff and hardened personality while at the same time he has this deep love for his younger Witcher that he had to raise and train nearly all by himself.
Lol I agree 100%, they basically just took him as a person, put him in a costume, gave him a sword, and told him he can't smile as much. He just seems so caring and loving as a person
@OMA COL I agree that they killed off multiple witchers too quick, not a single medallion woke someone up that day? Not to mention geralt Is the only one capable of killing a basilisk while it ate multiple more witchers
Having watched the series before playing the games, I find it almost unsettling how much he looks like the picture of Vesemir. It seems more likely they retconned the image from the game to match the actor!
I love that Joey improvised so much of his best moments in the show! He's a great actor and should definitely be a Disney prince

@@TheAakeeb93 I thought so too until I watched the show. It kind of blew my mind that she is only 25 (23 I think at the time of filming the first season), but her acting totally sells her as a way older and experienced witch.

Not sure about beauty and she doesn't fit the role excatly. Yennefer in the books and the games is far more diffrent.
I think it's the eyes that are just so vibrant that that is the main part of her face you focus on

As I said before, I just don't like Yennifer. I think the actress isn't right (not that good an actor). And I don't see any chemistry between her and Geralt.
The fun comes across on screen. The series improved 100% as soon as Jaskier was back in the episodes.
I've said this a few times, but I think he could have had so many good witty lines in the last two episodes in particular. Literally could not go to sleep until I saw he was safe

I would agree to this...I Honestly didn't realize how much i loved that character until he was brought back. When he left in season 1 i was like ok whatever but the moment i heard him singing in season 2 I smiled and realized how much the show needs him. I dont no the books or the Game honestly so if he dies im gonna be pissed lol.
@@Legion852 He doesnt. At least not yet. The story is still capped at Witcher 3 Wild Hunt. And he is just fine at the end at that. This series wont go that far into the future.
I absolutely admire Joeys singing voice. Better guy for the role as a classical fantasy bard is a hard one to find, cause he nailed it.
I'm a little late but I really hope you see this. Check out the amazing devil. Its a little band Joey's in and the music is just wonderful. If you like Jaskier's music in the witcher, you'll love this.

I’m know that I’m going to get slammed for this: but I thought that the great joke about Jaskier was that he couldn’t sing and his compositions were painful! Then I see nothing but praise for his singing and lyrics!!

I love how aware joey is of the memes around his character and he just has fun with it, he is just Chaos Bard Personified and he seems like a genuinely nice person. Then again so does most of the cast

It’s amazing how much eye color contributes to our recognition of a person. I’ve seen this before where someone takes different actors and changes their eye color, and for a lot of them it’s hard to recognize. Anya Chalotra looks like a completely different person without the purple eyes
No, she doesn’t. The difference is that in the series she wears a lot of glam makeup, in real life she wears much more minimal makeup. If you glammed her up, she would look like the character, even without contact lenses.

I think it depends per episode, but there were definitely some scenes in season 1 where I remember thinking to myself that she was more eyeshadow than person 😂
I think it was less in season 2 though, and expect it'll be related to how powerful her magic is through the series.

My favorite songs from this album are: Drinking song for the socially anxious, Inkpot Gods, and The Old Witch Sleep and the Good Man Grace. Though all their songs are f-ing brilliant!

Whether you’re into folk or not, the lyrics shift from spellbindingly haunting (“if we join our hands in prayer enough / to God I imagine it all starts to sound like applause”) to hysterical (“I’m gonna go home and dress my cat up like Batman”) to touching and well-loved (the whole of Marbles), such that there’s a song in there that’ll fit pretty much every emotional niche you need filled. Batey and his fellow singer Madeleine Hyland both have superb voices, and their harmonies and the way their parts play off each other are genius! 100% recommend.

Yeah, this guy gets it, these kinds of interviews are not about serious, penetrating journalism, breaking news, nor tabloid gossip. For the actors it's a job promoting the show, and for the interviewer it's about entertaining an audience. Job well done. Also, shout-out to the editor, there's a good rhythm to this video.
He's like Graham Norton. Every episode of Graham Norton Show I watched feels more like watching a group of good friends talking than serious interviewing 🙂

The actress that plays Yennefer is an incredible actor, and out of film now I'm crushing.
What I love about Ali's interviews is that he clearly researches the project and the people involved and then goes into the interview with something both personal but also relevant. Ali would never ask "Do you wear underewear in your costume." (Poor Scarlet Johanson)
Yennifer’s origin story in the first season was one of very few that have been able to grab my heart strings, tie them to a bison and jab it with a cattle prod.
Anya is an amazingly talented actress
The casting director really did put some effort in casting people that can act! I already think Henry and Anya had the perfect chemistry as Geralt and Yen, but I’m also so surprised at how the real Kim Bodnia talks vs Vesemir! What a revelation. The miss would probably be Freya because it’s getting so hard to believe that she’s just “11-14 y.o.”. But thankfully her chemistry with Henry still can pass off as father-daughter affection and not the sugar daddy type.
During the first season she did looked 14 years old but this second season she looks older.
She looks young but I think she’s like 20 now
I agree it's hard to believe she's 11-14, but I think by the end of season 2 she is supposed to be like 15 or something cause another year or so has passed (kind of, the different timespans of the different stories make it kind of hard to tell), but regardless I think of if they got an actress that actually was 11-14 and I just don't think it would work AT ALLLL the same as well as Freya and Henry work together. I think it honestly would ruin the show if she as a person was 6-9 years younger, I mean it's kind of hard to have a show this gritty and dark and then have a literal child as the main character. Like Ciri is already moody enough sometimes (as she should be haha), that if they made her that much younger I think a lot of that emotional despondence and tension between them would just come off as a whiney child acting up and not in a good way. Lolol I agree though I'm glad it doesn't come off as the sugar daddy type hahaha
I'm not familiar with the source material and I thought she was around 17 years old, I was actually pleased she became more grown up in the second season. but if she's still supposed to be 14 years old then that truly is hard to believe.
my only problem with casting is Freya as well. not a serious problem, it's just after season 2 there's something a bit not right with her portrayal, she sometimes has this little smirks when she acts which kinda bothers me. but as you said, at least her chemistry with Henry feels right, a father-daughter bonding. it also bothers me that she's wearing so much make up in her age, they put some on Ciri as well, and it's obvious that she's wearing some, which I think not a best decision given Ciri was supposed to be a pre-teen.
My favorite parts of the this show all involve Jaskier. "They are very much alive!"

He is totally right about New Zealand - the entire country is magical and beautiful! They have a rainforest, glow worm caves, a glacier, whale watching, Hobbiton & more! ^_^
We also have just about every climate under the sun! From cold enough to freeze your toilet water and crack the bowl, to dry desert heat, to tropical enough to grow every type of plant all year round. Obviously I'm biased, but really NZ is one of the best places to film fantasy movies and TV shows because it can believably be a whole world!

Saw the press for season 2 and was genuinely waiting for Ali's interview to come out! Awesome as always. Lighthearted and not uncomfortable and we always learn some new and interesting things about the actors/shooting process each time!

As a Dane, I had honestly forgotten about Kim Bodnia for what feels like decades until this second season... what a nice surprise to see this fantastic actor in such a big role.
The last time I watched him on the screen was probably in "Julefrokosten"

can i just say i do enjoy kim's vesimir quite much. i binged the whole 2nd season yesterday and boy did i love it.
Props to the Witcher crew for actually listening to the fans critiques from season one and making things even better. Most today will get defensive and blame the fan base for having to high expectations and calling them names. From Changing Geralts hair to adding more monsters.
I don't know about the hair but adding monster to a show cost a ton of money and not surprising that was lacking in a first season of a show they didn't know how well it would do. Props should have been given to what they were able to pull off in a first seasons - so many don't past that 1st due to ppl nit-picking every details and bailing because of it.

None of the people that read the books, played the games or have been long time Witcher fans loved this season. Besides the obvious raise in budget and production quality, the writing was absolute garbage...

They're not making these shows for only the fan base, they can't follow the lore to the letter. Shows have to cater to the masses and a large group need corny dialogue to feel instant connection to the characters (that they are completely unfamiliar with).
THE BEST interview thus far!! (seen a lot btw). I love these two together. Their personalities work really well in the same space. Wondering why we are not getting any interview with Joey with Henry. That would be a hoot, I wager. Gosh, Joey is so adorable!!
I keep wondering why Henry doesn't do more interviews with the rest of the cast. Before the premiere of the first season, he used to. But after that he is usually always alone. I'd like to see some fun interviews of him with his cast mates 😕

@@ladansemakabre Nah, I don't they give much credence to things such as that. After thinking about it, it's not that uncommon for one actor to be considered the "lead" because they are a somewhat bigger name, compared to the rest of the cast. Which is probably why he does a lot more interviews, and on well known television shows, internationally. Then the rest of the cast do these smaller, sporadic interviews. Unfortunate really, because when you have a big ensemble cast I think promo is a lot more effective when you see them all interacting together. I'd like to see his chemistry with the rest of the cast.

The only thing the second season missed was more Jaskier and Geralt moments, otherwise it is pretty much perfect!

I specifically love the casting for Vesemir. I don't know anything about the actor ( Kim Bodnia ) but i love his performance as Vesemir and the chemistry between his character and the others ( especially with Ciri ) is so good.

Season 2 was, on my opinion much better than season 1.
